How much of that is guaranteed, do you know?
I know they like Bates. He can block, he plays mean, and has pretty good hands.

11.5 over 3 years isn't bad. As Ertz ages, Sinnott will either start taking over the pass-catching part of the TE role or will fizzle out. Bates will do the dirty work. I believe he had interest from other teams.

Commanders re-sign CB Noah Igbinoghene

Olamide Zaccheaus is signing with the Bears.

Core special teams player Nick Bellore re-signs with Commanders
The Commanders re-signed linebacker/core special teams player Nick Bellore to a two-year deal Thursday, via Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.

Bellore, 35, spent last season with Washington, playing seven defensive snaps and 334 on special teams. He has played more special teams snaps than defensive snaps in every season in his career aside from 2016 when he started 10 games at inside linebacker for the 49ers. Bellore began his career with the Jets in 2011 and spent four years in New York before going to San Francisco for two, Detroit for two and Seattle for five. He joined the Commanders a year ago after his second Pro Bowl as a special teamer.

Free agent edge rusher Jacob Martin is signing with the Commanders on a one-year deal with a max value of $3 million, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.

"Martin, 29, spent last season with the Bears. He appeared in 11 games, seeing action on 222 defensive snaps and 206 on special teams, and he totaled 15 tackles and three sacks.

Martin entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick of the Seahawks in 2018, and he was in Seattle for one season before joining the Texans. He also has played for the Jets, Broncos and Colts. In seven seasons, Martin has recorded 100 tackles, 21 sacks, 38 quarterback hits, five passes defensed and seven forced fumbles."

Not gonna lie - so far I'm a little underwhelmed other than the Tunsil trade, but I'm pretty sure AP knows what he's doing - a far cry from the Snyder/Cerrato days when we used to "win" free agency and then suck badly during the season. Looking forward to the draft - I'd like to see us address EDGE, OL, RB and DB, maybe in that order.

I wouldn't be mad if our 1st or 2nd went to RB. There are 5 or so guys that would be day one difference makers at RB, and they're not going to last until round 4. There will be solid contributors at RB on day 3, but it's a lot more of a crapshoot than getting one of Jeanty, Hampton, Judkins, Henderson, or Johnson. I imagine 3 to 4 of these guys available with pick 29. And maybe 1 to 2 available at our 2nd rounder.

I'd be pretty happy if Jeanty or Hampton fell to us in round 1, but I don't really see it happening. Not a big fan of Kaleb Johnson but if one of those other guys is the pick in round 2 (or even Dylan Sampson), awesome.

I think if Hampton has a good chance he makes it to us in round 1. Jeanty? I can't see it unless we trade up, which we won't.

I wouldn't pick Sampson until day 3. There are some interesting pieces that will be there, but no one that fits as a 3 down back centerpiece type rusher.

Nate Herbig
Nate Herbig

Former Eagles, Jets, and Steelers guard Nate Herbig has signed a 1-year deal to join the Commanders OL per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. He was an undrafted free agent who was signed by Philadelphia after the 2019 NFL draft. Herbig suffered a torn rotator cuff last August, and missed the 2024 season. He has started 30 games, and played in 61 over 5 seasons.

More on why they acquired him:

The Commanders are shuffling their offensive line after a January ACL tear for Sam Cosmi, and this month’s trade for LT Laremy Tunsil. They restructured the contract of RT Andrew Wylie and could move him inside to guard, or to backup tackle. Brandon Coleman was drafted to play LT, but he will likely be tried out at RT and guard to see his best fit. Herbig has played both guard spots, and will provide valuable depth if he doesn’t win a starting job. He was in line to be the Steelers starting center last year before the injury.

Looks like Coleman and Wylie will vie for the RT spot (I'm rooting for Coleman, but best guy wins) and the loser goes to G.

Dante Fowler signed with the Cowboys. Prior to Washington he played for the Cowboys.
I wish the Cowboys would get good again, and that we stay good, because it would be fun hating them again.

NOOOO a hundred year pox on the Cowboys! May they not see another winning season until Jayden Daniels is inducted into the HOF.

Zack Ertz really likes the John Bates re-signing.

Ertz: John Bates 'just dominant' as blocking TE

"Bates, a fourth-round pick from Boise State in 2021, isn't the dominant pass-catching tight end many teams have come to love in modern offenses. Sure, he's caught 69.3% of his passes over four seasons, but he's only been targeted 88 times with 61 catches and two touchdowns. Those numbers alone aren't enticing enough for an NFL team to retain a player like Bates, never mind doing so for the foreseeable future.

And yet re-signing Bates was one of the first moves Washington made in free agency, bringing him back on a reported three-year deal, primarily because of how much his ability as a blocker contributed to the team's success in 2024. He's so good at it that teammate Zach Ertz, regarded as one of the NFL's best tight ends over the last decade, believes there's no other tight end who's better at clearing running lanes and protecting quarterbacks. "John probably doesn't get the national recognition that he deserves in terms of what he did on an every-play basis for us last year," Ertz said. "He's probably the most dominant blocking tight end I've really ever seen and studied in my career.""

I hate free agency. Money really is the root of all evil.

I though the he was good player and was interested in seeing his development/growth alongside Daniels.

Laremy Tunsil vows to reduce league-leading 19 penalties in 2024

" “There’s a lot of things I want to work on. Those 19 penalties I had last season are unacceptable. That’s something I want to address for sure, getting that number down or even having none. I want to keep growing as a player, as a pass blocker, a run blocker; it doesn’t matter. I’m always trying to improve in each of those fields.”

For the year, Tunsil had 12 false starts, three illegal formation fouls, two holding calls, an ineligible man downfield violation, and an unnecessary roughness penalty. Of the 19 penalties, 12 happened in the first four weeks of the 2024 season — with six in a Week 3 loss to the Vikings."

In their bid to sign every available mediocre defensive linemen, the Commanders just signed Foster Sarell.

"The Commanders are signing offensive tackle Foster Sarell to one-year deal, the team announced. Sarell, 26, played 11 games for the Chargers last season, seeing action on 40 offensive snaps and 47 on special teams.

Sarell went undrafted in 2021 and signed with the Ravens. He made the team’s practice squad for five days before the Ravens cut him, and he landed on the Giants’ practice squad for seven days. Sarell caught on with the Chargers, though he didn’t appear in a game in 2021. He made three starts in 2022, his only three career starts, and he appeared in every game as a reserve in 2023."

Michael Gallup signed. Ron Rivera wondering how this GM can pull from DAL/SF so much, but he couldn't pull from CAR. 1) SF/DAL >> CAR 2) Quinn >>> Ron. I guess Gallup goes into the Dyami Brown role.

"Wide receiver Michael Gallup signed with the Commanders in 2025 and then met the media to explain why he was coming back to the NFL after retiring last year.

Gallup signed with the Raiders as a free agent in the spring and went through offseason work with the team before announcing his retirement. On Thursday, Gallup explained that he wasn’t “in the right head space” after parting ways with the Cowboys and that led him to walk away."

Personally I don't think Gallup will amount to much but he's not without talent and isn't over the hill age-wise, so who knows? Some of these middling guys they're signing will work out and the others will just be camp bodies.

Olamide Zaccheus signed a 1-year contract with the Bears for $1.5 million.
Soooooo, why didn't we keep him? $1.5 million is peanuts.

Granted he had a couple of good games down the stretch but he really wasn't that good most of the regular season. We need to upgrade and get better talent around Terry. I do wish we would have kept Dyami over Noah Brown though. But I'm sure it was a money thing.

Wes Welker joining Commanders as personnel analyst

Multiple reports indicate Welker will be a personnel analyst, working with both the coaching and personnel staff for Washington. Welker, 43, had been the Dolphins’ receivers coach from 2022-2024. He previously crossed paths with General Manager Adam Peters with the 49ers, as Welker was San Francisco’s receivers coach from 2019-2021 while Peters was in the team’s front office. Additionally, Welker was notably offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s college teammate at Texas Tech.

The Commanders are set to meet with a couple of cornerbacks in the final days of the pre-draft visit window. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Maxwell Hairston and Quincy Riley are both set to visit with the team on Tuesday.

Hairston was a starter at Kentucky for the last two seasons, but he missed time in 2024 due to a shoulder injury. He had six interceptions and returned three of them for touchdowns over the last two seasons. Riley began his college time at Middle Tennessee State and moved on to Louisville for the last three years. He had 33 tackles, three tackles for loss, two interceptions and a forced fumble for the Cardinals last season.

How the Commanders can help Jayden Daniels build on success
Good article by John Keim

"The second year is a big challenge," said Kansas City coach Andy Reid, who helped build on early success with quarterbacks Donovan McNabb in Philadelphia and Patrick Mahomes with the Chiefs. "If you can get through your second year, you got a pretty good thing going."
But in three of the past four regular-season games, his sack percentage was 10.4 or higher and the pressure percentage 37.5 or greater. Washington knew that needed to change. So step one was finding a premium left tackle, eventually trading for five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil. That move allows Washington to shift promising young lineman Brandon Coleman, who started 15 games at left tackle last season as a rookie -- including three in the playoffs -- to the right side, trying him first at tackle.

D.C. is close to a deal worth more than $3 billion to bring the Washington Commanders back to the District and build a new stadium at the RFK Stadium site. The deal isn’t final as negotiations are ongoing, so the number could change, but multiple sources familiar with the deal told News4 that Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Commanders have the framework for a deal in place that would see the team paying the vast majority of the costs to build a new stadium and much of the money provided by the city going for infrastructure that will support the entire 180-acre development. The Commanders would put up as much as $2.5 billion, and the District would provide up to $850 million, documents obtained by News4 show. D.C.’s funding would go toward what are referred to as eligible capital costs associated with the stadium and infrastructure for the stadium and surrounding 180-acre campus, including parking structures that will serve the entire development.

The Eagles declined Jahan Dotson's 5th year option, lol. That was a good trade for us.

The move is not a surprise given Dotson’s lack of production last season in his first season with the Eagles. The team’s No. 3 receiver, who had 19 catches for 216 yards in 2024, would have received a fully guaranteed $16.8 million. He now is scheduled for free agency in 2026.

The Eagles acquired Dotson and a 2025 fifth-round pick from the Commanders for a 2025 third-round pick and two 2025 seventh-round picks. Washington used the third-rounder and one of the seventh-rounders in the trade with the Texans to acquire left tackle Laremy Tunsil this offseason.

Conerly had the fastest 10-yard split (1.71) for an offensive lineman at the combine, and that quickness shows up on tape. His arms are on the shorter side, but he pops out of his stance and pushes out to meet speed rushers. He can plant and power down when defenders try to cross his face. Conerly mirrors well, his hands are big and he rarely loses once locked on. He seals the edge, works up to the second level and cuts off backside defenders on zone runs. He is strong enough to move defenders off the ball, and he is an effective combination blocker. -- Steve Muench
