I know it's hard, but he should walk away. Ekeler's always come across as a smart guy to me, so hopefully he has himself set up for life after football. I know nothing about his family or support system, though. I think Washington also has some responsibility to maybe help guide him out.
 
Ekler could have a smaller role anyway with the Croskey-Merritt buzz. Have no idea if he's thinking about retiring or truly a cut candidate, but I wouldn't cut him unless I knew for sure Croskey-Merritt was ready to contribute. Because Brian Robinson has missed several games over the years and all the other RBs are just JAGs IMO.

I've drafted him with one of the last picks in most of my dynasty rookie drafts and got him off waivers after the draft in several leagues as well. Just looked own him in 9 of my 15 leagues. I honestly haven't read a ton about him during camp but his speed is legit and Washington doesn't really have a bunch of proven WRs outside of Terry and Deebo so figured he's well worth the late pick or waiver bucks. I mean, Jayden Daniels is his QB, what's not to like :yes:

For his own well-being, he should retire. This stuff only goes one way. I think Ekeler and Washington should come to an exit plan that works for both.
 
Training camp schedule (July 27 to August 10)
The team will hold three open practices for all fans on July 27, July 29, and August 2, along with three open practices exclusively for season ticket members in select membership types on July 28, July 31, and August 4. All practices will begin at 9 a.m. EST and are subject to change.

I don't know why people are so set on assuming Washington will regress. ALL signs point to a franchise, from top to bottom (ownership, coaches, players) on the rise. Everything I've read from Jayden Daniels this offseason shows how hard a working he is, that he wants to look for tendencies he showed last year to defensive coordinators. I swear I think he's got some of the same mojo Peyton Manning had. I will be surprised if they don't win 12 games this year, even with a harder schedule. Take a hungry motivated team that just greatly improved its o-line, secondary, and pass rush, and we might just see improvements from the skilled positions too (there is a lot of speed and talent added between Deebo, Lane, Sinnott, and Crosky-Merritt). I love what this organization is doing and our future is extremely promising :drive:

Once TJ Watt got signed and a couple 2nd round rookies got guaranteed contracts I figured it was about time to for them to sign McLauren. The guy is worth whatever they pay him, he's that good and that important to the team.
 
You know, if they sign Keenan Allen and Terry is still unsigned, I'm going to throw many things into the street. They I may throw the street. Who wants to help me throw a street?

I don't think many are saying they'll regress as a team (they clearly look more talented to me than they did this time last year), but that their record could be worse than 2024's. Who the hell knows? A few lucky/unlucky bounces can flip records pretty quickly.

You know your team better than I do. What did they do on defense to improve?
 
Any regression, if it happens, wouldn't necessarily be directly related to the D but since you brought it up, our secondary should be significantly improved compared to last year and hopefully Von Miller has enough left in the tank to provide help with the pass rush. We didn't fix ALL the holes all at once, no, but things are looking up - the offense should be excellent again this season and the defense will be good enough. Did you know that Saquon's on the cover of Madden?

Drafted Trey Amos (who should be a starting CB) Kain Medrano (LB but may play in the secondary initially) as well as signing several free agents (Edge Rushers Jacob Martin, Deatrich Wise, and Von Miller, DL Sheldon Day and Javon Kinlaw, CB Jonathan Jones, and S Will Harris). I do think there were more improvements made on offense, and I think like last year, they could win a lot of games by outscoring their opponents (more likely than shutting people down defensively) and then just having year 2 under the same system and coaches should help as well.
 
Report: Von Miller gets a $6.1 million base deal from Commanders
Via Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the base value of the one-year deal is $6.1 million. With incentives, Miller can earn up to $10.5 million. Missing, for now, is the amount of the contract that is guaranteed. While the base salary becomes guaranteed as a practical matter if Miller is on the Week 1 active roster, a smaller guarantee implies flexibility to move on during training camp or the preseason. Also not mentioned is the portion of the base deal that must be earned in the form of per-game active roster bonuses. Finally, no triggers have been reported regarding the $4.4 million incentive package. They may be hard to earn; they may be easy to earn.

The discretion in blasting out the details is understandable. Miller is a future Hall of Famer, whose most recent deal had an APY of $20 million. He was due to make $17.1 million in Buffalo this year on a contract the Bills terminated. To continue his career, he has taken a massive haircut. The true and complete details (especially the guarantee) will reveal much about the extent of the financial risk the Commanders have assumed, even at a base investment of $6.1 million. Adam Peters on Terry McLaurin: We’ll do everything we can to get a deal done

Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin told reporters last week that he’s been “pretty frustrated” by the lack of progress on a new contract. He also said that he hadn’t decided whether or not he would report to training camp.

But in a Tuesday morning press conference, Commanders G.M. Adam Peters said that he’s expecting McLaurin to show up, just as he would expect from any other player. As for a potential new deal, Peters noted the club would like to get something done. “Yeah, I mean, first, I think without a doubt, I think everybody in this building values Terry very much,” Peters said. “And we knew that coming in and we knew that even more after spending a year with him. In terms of where we’re at, we’ve had conversations recently and we’ll look to have more conversations. “We’re going to do everything we can in order to get a deal done.”

I'm a pretty steadfast and unabashed hardliner about the name.

There was nothing wrong with 'Redskins'.

It should never have been changed, and changing the name was a ridiculous bow to a ridiculous agenda.

I refuse to call them the current name. They will always be the Redskins to me, and I would do almost anything to see the name 'Redskins' restored.

Agree 1000%. I would have already bought Daniels and McLaurin's jersey if they had Redskins on them. I refuse to buy a commanders jersey. :shrug:
 
I hope the name doesn't become a political commodity that changes every 4 or 8 years. I can't imagine anyone wanting the federal government naming our football team.

I loved Redskins. I'm fine with Commanders. What I care about is the team and the play on the field.

Dan Quinn said Sam Cosmi is "doing great" with his ACL surgery recovery. With players taking physicals today, Quinn said he can offer an update tomorrow.

I agree and I'll scream my head off for them regardless of the name on the jersey, but I won't spend money on apparel unless it's our real team's name and the legacy this franchise was built on. I hope Trump's tweets help get the name changed!!
 
MD, VA rejoin bid for Commanders stadium as DC Council lets exclusivity clause expire

The D.C. Council will hold public hearings on the RFK Stadium proposal on July 29 and 30. The Commanders have urged fans to register to testify in support of the plan. A vote is expected in the coming weeks. If it slips into August or beyond, sources say it could significantly delay construction — and with it, the Commanders’ return to the District. Put simply by WUSA9's Eric Flack, DC Council is entering a "FAFO phase," as the scheduled 2030 reopening for RFK Stadium is now in serious jeopardy.

I had no problems with the Redskins name but now that it is gone, I don't want it back. It's a distraction and I'm tired of the team being about everything except football. Let that lie in the past w/ Snyder.

Plus, I'm thinking of ordering a Mando helmet and painting it burgundy and gold and going to games as the Commanderlorian. Which, let's face it, would be awesome.

Snyder was the part of the reason the name WAS changed. So all the more reason to change back to the Redskins!!

Washington WR Terry McLaurin, who is seeking a new contract, did not report to training camp today, per source. McLaurin was not present for the Commanders’ conditioning test today that marked an unofficial start of training camp. All other players are present and accounted for

The Commanders placed McLaurin on the did not report list on Wednesday morning, which sets the stage for daily fines of $50,000 until the wideout joins the club to prepare for the 2025 season. McLaurin opted not to report because he wants a new contract with the team that would presumably make any short-term losses easier to swallow. Washington also announced that guard Sam Cosmi has been placed on the physically unable to perform list. Cosmi tore his ACL in the team’s playoff win over the Lions. Both players can be activated at any point in camp, although the timing of Cosmi’s injury likely means he’ll be out for quite a while. They’ll be hoping that the relationship with McLaurin is mended more quickly.

Peters believes he has a better roster.

Peters faced a difficult task in 2024. He inherited a roster that went 4-13 in 2023 and needed a quarterback as well as more talent at multiple positions. It took several savvy moves and a strong draft class to do so, but the Commanders fielded one of the biggest surprises last season and were one win away from a Super Bowl.

His next challenge was to improve upon that foundation, and he believes the team achieved that ahead of the 2025 campaign. "I'd like to think we're better," Peters said. "But really, it was cool to see the players that we hadn't been with last year get so much better and get so much closer...and work together." Although the Commanders still have questions to be answered on their roster, there is a strong case that they improved their personnel. They wanted to be better at stopping the run, so they signed several players with more size, physicality and experience in that area. They wanted to provide more protection and weapons for Daniels, so they traded for Tunsil and Deebo Samuel in addition to drafting Conerly. They also signed and drafted defensive backs with more coverage experience, which should allow them to hold their own against some of the league's better receiving corps. All that leads Peters to believe the Commanders are in a better spot than they were in 2024.

Commanders reveal locker room changes after poor marks in NFLPA survey

The team’s locker room got an F grade in the survey and the team overhauled the area after the end of the 2024 season. The lockers now have cushioned chairs and dryers for wet uniforms while the sound system was upgraded along with the sauna, steam room and showers. “It’s like the Four Seasons up in here! This is crazy. This is crazy. This is crazy,” safety Will Harris said, via the team’s website.

Commanders sign WR Tay Martin

The Commanders put Terry McLaurin on the reserve/did not report list on Wednesday and they signed another wide receiver later in the day. The team announced the signing of Tay Martin to the 90-man roster. Martin made three appearances for the 49ers in 2022 and 2023 and he played in one game for the Titans last season. Martin made his only regular season catch in that appearance for Tennessee and it went for a 49-yard touchdown against the Texans in Week 18. The Titans waived Martin in May and his stay in Washington could be dependent on how long McLaurin remains away from the team while looking for a new contract.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the team has agreed to a deal with safety Percy Butler. It’s a one-year extension for Butler, who is in the final year of his rookie deal, and no other terms have been announced. Butler joined Washington as a 2022 fourth-round pick and he’s appeared in 50 regular season and playoff games over his first three seasons. He started 18 of those games and has 127 tackles, 10 passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in those appearances.

Will Harris, Quan Martin, and Jeremy Reaves join Butler in the safety group for the Commanders this year.

Adjusted D.C. stadium deal could be approved soon

The deal could soon be done. Apparently without anyone squeezing the Commanders to change their name. Via NBCWashington.com, D.C. Council chairperson Phil Mendelson reached an agreement with the team to adjust the financial terms of the deal struck between the Commanders and Mayor Muriel Bowser. The revised agreement opens the door for D.C. Council to vote on the stadium proposal in “a matter of days.” The vote is expected to happen after public hearings set for July 29 and 30.

Mayor: D.C. Super Bowl is a “lock,” if new stadium is built

The new stadium means many things. One thing it means in particular is that D.C. will host a Super Bowl. Appearing on 106.7 The Fan in D.C., Bowser called a Super Bowl in the new stadium a “lock.” That’s how it usually goes with most publicly-funded stadiums. It’s the loose quid pro quo. If you build it, the Super Bowl will come. In most cold-weather cities, a dome is a necessity. MetLife Stadium in early 2014 was the lone exception. But from Minneapolis (twice), to Detroit (twice), to Indianapolis, a covered venue constructed with taxpayer money gets a Super Bowl. And the new Commanders stadium will have a dome. Which means it will have a Super Bowl.

D.C. Council sets Commanders stadium vote for August 1

Before this week, there were no indications that a vote would happen so quickly. Negotiations between the team and D.C. Council chairperson Phil Mendelson resulted in a revision of the deal and, in turn, a faster-tracking of the process. Per the Post, changes include D.C. receiving tax revenue from parking, food/beverage, and merchandise. Also, the team will move senior leadership and sales offices to D.C. Having a vote doesn’t mean the vote will prevail, obviously. That said, the entire vibe has become that, when the vote happens, the “ayes” will have it — and the Commanders will soon have their new stadium.
 
Tunsil received a veteran’s day off, which kicked Andrew Wylie to his spot at left tackle and allowed first-round draft pick Josh Conerly Jr. to play with the first team after he ran with the second team Wednesday. It was a learning experience for Conerly, who had good moments in the running game but struggled against Dorance Armstrong’s speed around the edge.

Conerly will have a chance to claim the Week 1 starting job, but it will not be given to him. “We’re going to compete for this for a while,” Quinn said. Conerly, 21, declared for the draft out of Oregon after his junior season. He’s the youngest player in Commanders training camp. Wylie is a versatile and reliable veteran. It would be a mistake to read too much into Conerly’s use in training camp; Quinn said he wants to manipulate playing time at tackle to see different matchups. Conerly is obviously the long-term plan at tackle. Whether he can claim the job for Week 1 is the question. Aside from his play, Conerly is making a strong impression on coaches and teammates. “I’m really encouraged by Josh’s work ethic,” Quinn said. During a field goal drill, Conerly huddled with veteran linemen Tyler Biadasz and Nick Allegretti and asked questions. He stayed after practice as Biadasz flung shotgun snaps to Daniels, practicing the timing of his pass set.

Commanders' free-agent gamble showed up to camp looking like a different player

Washington released Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jonathan Allen this offseason when no willing trade suitor came forward. This was an inevitable outcome, but Peters had a contingency plan ready to go immediately. That was Javon Kinlaw. The Commanders gave the free-agent lineman a three-year, $45 million deal with $30 million guaranteed. This was instantly blasted as an overpay by analysts and fans, which only motivated the former first-round pick further in the weeks leading into training camp.

And he showed up at Ashburn looking like a different player.It's not hard to miss Kinlaw. He's 6-foot-5 with a muscular, large frame that represents an imposing figure. But the South Carolina product looked much leaner than his documented 319-pound weight suggests. There's no way Kinlaw is that now. He's been working exceptionally hard away from the team, and it shows. The No. 14 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft looked explosive during drills, and there's a renewed focus to his approach that bodes well for his chances in Washington.
