***OFFICIAL*** Washington Commanders Thread (3 Viewers)

I can’t see this team going backwards. Jayden will be better, the line is way better, Deebo is going to be a major cog in the offense and Merritt gives us a home run threat we haven’t had since Portis. Giddy up! :drive:

If Washington is going to go forward, it's the defense that needs to improve, not the offense.

And by most accounts, it should be better. Our secondary especially. Lattimore wasn't healthy last year (he is now) and Trey Amos has been the star of camp on the defensive side of the ball. And Kinlaw has also been a great addition.

10-7 or 11-6, even though they'll be a better team than last year.
I'm sticking with this. If anything, those win totals may be high. Their defense is pretty likely to be pretty bad again, they'll have to outscore opponents, and they're playing better opponents.

This just in from your ol' pal Debbie Downer:

We're not better top-to-bottom than the Eagles, certainly not this year, at least.

Because of this, we are not winning the Division, nor the automatic Playoff Berth that comes with it.

Because of *this* we are competing with 11 other Teams for 3 WC Playoff Berths.

IMHO, Division Winners: Eagles, Vikings, Buccs, 49'ers

WC Candidates: Cowboys, Giants / Lions, Packers, Bears / Falcons, Panthers, Saints / Rams, Seahawks, Cardinals

The (my) WFT'skins went 12-5 in 2024, and several of the 12 W's are *easy* to classify as 'lucky' (I have them as 8-3 in games that easily could have gone either way)...proven probability theory, it is *extremely* safe to presume near 100% regression in lucky outcomes...IMHO, this Team is not *appreciably* better than the 2024 Team (although they are at least somewhat better), and they play an *very* difficult schedule, that, IMHO, is going to yield them *maybe* a 10-win Season...but only if I squint real hard.

The most likely scenario, IMHO, is a slightly better Team with a slightly worse record. I'd honestly be surprised with anything over 9-8...and I love my Team.

They *might* be better than 8 of the WC contenders, but I think it's *very* close - it's just that, though - it doesn' t do them any good if they're *better*, if they don't have the wins...either way, they are close to 100% likely to play a series of road Playoff games, which is a tough row to hoe, and very unlikely to lead to a Super Bowl appearance, much less a Lombardi

Last Season, the 1st Rd W over the Buccs was legit, and exorcised a lot of playoff demons (I'd like to give the Seahawks a playoff loss or 2, as well), but any Team in the NFL could have beaten the Lions team that was a shell of itself by the time the next game rolled around, and the Eagles spanked us good and proper, which should have showed everyone how much work there still was (and is) to do.

On the right track, sure. Better than last year, sure, but likely a W regression. Playoffs, 50-50. SB, very unlikely.

SB while JD is under his Rookie contract? Unlikely (Eagles prevent us from winning NFCE this year and probably next, pushing us into a WC slot).

So, with TMcL's usefulness likely running out before we go to a Super Bowl, with or without him, what's the good reason to give him a monster extension?

ETA: I would gladly sign TMcL to a reasonable extension, one that takes care of him, and helps develop JD further, regardless of making playoffs, or how far they might go.

That's where I'm at right now.

Asked about the WR depth, Quinn pointed out how rookie Jaylin Lane worked some outside vs. the Bengals. "he's the one I see the ascension taking place." Said that he sees Lane taking the coaching points and applying onto the field. "He can apply it very quickly," Quinn said.

Commanders fans likely left Northwest Stadium on Monday night pleased even though their team lost, because in the brief time the first-team offense was on the field, it was explosive — and Daniels, last season’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, never threw a game pass.

It was a running festival that would have made Joe Gibbs and the Hogs proud. The right side of the offensive line — tight end John Bates, rookie right tackle Josh Conerly and guard Andrew Wylie — plowed over the Bengals first-team defense (albeit without their best player, Trey Hendrickson). Newcomer Deebo Samuel had one carry for 19 yards. Chris Rodriguez peeled off a 40-yard run. There was Croskey-Merritt’s touchdown run. And on another drive, Daniels pulled the ball down for a 14-yard run, breaking tackles along the way instead of sliding when he was at risk in a meaningless preseason game.

Dan Quinn talks about getting outplayed in all three phases by the Ravens; too many turnovers

Dan Quinn spoke to the media after today’s 30-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. It was the Washington Commanders third and final preseason game, and Quinn wasn’t happy with getting outplayed in all three phases of the game. Sam Hartman had two interceptions and a fumble, and Josh Johnson added another pick in when he relieved him.

DQ says he’s impressed by Brandon Coleman asking to play today. Sometimes the coach has to stop the player but they knew BC could use the work
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 23, 2025

Brandon Coleman was originally on the list of players who were sitting out today’s game, but he wanted the reps after missing weeks with a leg injury. Quinn said they will always do what’s best for the players, and Coleman was ready to go, while players like Noah Brown want to play, but aren’t quite there yet.

Commanders guard Brandon Coleman said he asked to play today despite initially being ruled out (along with other starters).Coleman didn’t play in the preseason last year and said that impacted his start to the season. He wanted game reps, especially at a new position, before the regular season starts.

Sam Howell was just traded to the Eagles. His spot on the Vikings roster was taken when they signed Carson Wentz.
I still wish Sam could make it in this league, just seems less and less likely now. But he’s a good guy and I’m sure a great teammate

Commanders have a problem brewing behind Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner

Apart from losing quarterback Jayden Daniels, the worst place Washington could lose a player right now is at linebacker. Actually, as great as Daniels is, a loss at linebacker could be even more serious. The drop-off from the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year to his backup, Marcus Mariota, is noticeable but not insurmountable. The veteran proved very effective when called to play last year.

The depth pieces after Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu are a different story. Luvu was on the field for 98 percent of the Commanders' defensive plays in 2024. Wagner did him one better, playing on 99%. That is one of the major reasons Washington’s defense was as good as it was. It's two second-team All-Pro linebackers were on the field all the time. Dante Fowler Jr. was listed as the third linebacker last season, but he was essentially a pure edge rusher. The backups to Wagner and Luvu, had they been needed, would have been Mykal Walker and, once he was healthy, Jordan Magee. Safety Jeremy Chinn also could have filled in if needed.

Magee has returned this season, and he is the primary backup to both linebackers. Sixth-round rookie Kain Medrano has been taking a lot of snaps. After them, Kam Arnold, Ale Kaho, and Duke Riley have been battling for a spot. Both Magee and Medrano have shown excellent physical talent, but both need a lot of work. The Temple product is a little ahead, but it still looks like the time he missed last season and this summer's training camp is slowing him down. He is very active and does make tackles, but too often, he is running to the wrong hole or taking bad angles. Medrano has looked very raw. He runs around a lot but is rarely involved in the play. He looks lost on too many reps so far. Both on running plays and in coverage, it’s hard to imagine defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. would actually feel confident if the former UCLA standout were forced into action. The two kids — Arnold and Kaho — have looked a bit more comfortable, but they are also playing against opposition further down the depth chart. Both are far more likely to wind up on the practice squad than playing meaningful snaps this season.

Not sure I understand the point of guys like Standig, who is good at his job, on a day like this. The team gives the same info to the NFL, and it gets released by the NFL. https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-roster-cuts-tracking-player-releases-ahead-of-the-2025-roster-deadline His post is no more than a replicant of what is already stated.

Anywho, time for some football. We've got a strong team. But much tougher opponents. Interested to see if the coaching staff can step up its game planning to get JD5 even more TDs, and if the D can get off the field against good RBs

The Commanders have released RB Demetric Felton, per source; strong PS candidate (@NickiJhabvala 1st). Had a good camp; coaches liked the depth at this position.
Interesting quote there from John Keim -- "coaches like the depth at this position", talking about RB.

This is the kind of information we get from beat reporters like Keim and Standig that we do NOT get from the cut trackers run by the NFL and various sports outlets.

Clelin Ferrell started 10 games for the Commanders last season, but he won't be returning in 2025. Washington has decided to cut the defensive end, according to The Athletic.

The move is somewhat of a surprise, but it's certainly possible the Commanders have their eyes on someone to replace him. Ferrell, a former 2019 first-round pick of the Raiders, ranked fifth on the team last season with 3.5 sacks.

Commanders have the NFL’s oldest 53-man roster, Packers have the youngest

The Commanders have the oldest team in the NFL this year, and the oldest team in the NFL in more than a decade, based on the average age of all the players on their 53-man roster. The Packers, meanwhile, are the youngest team in the league for the third consecutive year. According to data compiled by Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice.com, the average age of the Commanders’ 53 players is 28.1. Kempski has been tracking the average ages of all NFL initial 53-man rosters since 2012, and the Commanders are the first team ever to have an average age over 28. The previous oldest teams were the 2023 Saints and 2018 Raiders, who both had an average age of 27.4.

There’s plenty of optimism about the Commanders’ future because of 24-year-old quarterback Jayden Daniels, but plenty of other key players on the roster are past their 30th birthdays. That includes 36-year-old pass rusher Von Miller, 35-year-old linebacker Bobby Wagner, 34-year-old tight end Zach Ertz, 31-year-old left tackle Laremy Tunsil and 30-year-old running back Austin Ekeler. Having an old roster isn’t necessarily a bad thing for this year, but it does point to the Commanders facing a future in which they’ll need to bring in plenty of new faces to build around Daniels.

The Packers continue to prioritize young talent: Green Bay’s average age is 25.2.

The Washington Commanders are #29 on the waiver priority list, but they weren’t awarded any players on the waiver wire.
None of the 36 players Washington released were claimed by other teams, and they are now available to sign to the Commanders practice squad.

They still need a backup center, and I think they can still use backup help at WR and CB, because you can never have too many cornerbacks.

Damn, this is very hard. I don't think I can sum up Rick Snider's role in my life in just a few tweets so I won't try. And I would need way more than two minutes to discuss. Can you give me 30? My heart aches considerably right now, just as it does for anyone who knew him.
Rick Snider, beat reporter since the Paleozoic era, just died. He was really well-liked by other beat reporters.

We met in the auxiliary press box at RFK -- sharing a meal of green hot dogs and warm coke at halftime (if you know, you know). But we immediately bonded. That was more than 31 years ago, he was a freelancer and I was just doing a story on a local player.
We remained close since that time. I always admired him as a reporter. He was damn good at breaking news -- he was terrific during the sale of the team after Cooke died. Always told him he'd make a good union boss: he could battle with suits while mixing with workers.
That served him well as a reporter. It's why he broke a lot of news. He was competitive, but gracious. He was the first reporter to tell me I was doing a good job. I NEVER forgot that. That **** matters. He wasn't threatened by others and would praise often.

When I was first credentialed to attend Redskins camp 26 years ago, Rick Snider was a heavy hitter on the beat. Few people have been as supportive to me in the decades since. I've sat next to him in the press box at hundreds of games. I borrowed his binoculars so many times that at a December game years ago, he wrapped up a new pair of binoculars for me as a Christmas gift. That was Rick. The worst thing about this season will be sitting next to the seat he should be occupying.

As I wrestle with his sudden passing, the thing I keep coming back to is how much work he put into keeping in touch with people. You heard from him constantly. A DM. A text. Something small. Recently: A picture of his "Senior SmaTrip" card bragging about getting half-price fares. A picture of the WaWa in Dahlgren as he drove through my home town. Letting people know that you're thinking about them is such an awesome thing to do. Putting in the work to be a friend is such a wonderful quality. He was so good at that. It's something I'll try to do better moving forward. The other thing I've thought about is that he gave feedback constantly. Most of the time it was positive but sometimes he would say less comfortable things that he thought you needed to hear. "Be careful about doing..." or "you don't need to be working this much, you've got a wife and kids at home.." Serious stuff.

Rick was a very unique person. Old-school journalist. Took the profession VERY seriously. He would tell you if he thought you screwed up. But he was also more willing to give you roses for the good stuff than pretty much anybody I've met in sports media. I think that's because of how much he loved his industry. One other thing: On July 28th he told me Jacory Croskey-Merritt was going to be the starting RB for the Commanders this season. Camp had just begun. I thought he was nuts. Rick was a hard-*** with an unbelievable heart. He loved his family and bragged about his grandkids all the time.I'm thinking about them tonight. I'm thinking about his long-time media buddies who knew him longer than I did, too. Hug your people. Give 'em 2 minutes when you can. That's what matters.
