I agree, but I just think it's a closer call than people are making it out to be.
The bigger problem IMO is Revere. You can tolerate meh CF play if a guy is putting the ball in play every time up, getting on base 35% of the time and wreaking havoc on the basepaths, but Revere is doing none of those things. Although it's nice to see he's added "lazy fly ball to LF" to go with "ground ball to 2B" in his expanding offensive arsenal.

I can only guess that they are still worried about Turner's defense. If that's the case, extra time down in AAA to work on SS is probably better for him than learning CF.

I hated the Revere trade at the time, but Storen has been bad anyway. Still no reason to trot him out there in the leadoff spot.
The dropoff at SS defense is a legit concern, but if he can get on base, he could fill a pretty big hole.

The Washington Post just ran an article on Lombardozzi. His career really went down hill after being traded by the Nats. And now he is back with the organization.

Solid rotation guy, you're always happy to see his turn come up, but never going to be spectacular, nothing in his arsenal that makes your jaw drop. Sinker helps him limit big innings, which is probably his best weapon. The strikeout numbers are down this year, which concerns me a bit.
I don't think they would trade him. Historically the Nats/Rizzo have resisted the temptation to trade young talent for established stars. They haven't traded away a quality under 25 player or prospect since they moved Alex Meyer for Denard Span four years ago. That and the Gio Gonzalez trade are the only two times I can recall them ever doing it.

Anyway it's possible they trade Ross of course, just seems unlikely to me. Although they are apparently planning to go hard after the Yankees bullpen and he would make sense for them.

Baseball teams make trades all the time involving all sorts of players. Rizzo has a great track record on trading guys when their stock is high and buying low. It really depends on the players.
My one big question on Rizzo is that some of his moves have really disrupted team chemistry and player confidence. The Rafael Soriano signing and Palpelbon trade really messed with Storen and the bullpen.

I'm not so sure about this narrative now that Storen's flaming out in Toronto too. The problem may have had a lot more to do with Storen's mental fortitude or even his ability level than with Rizzo undermining him.
That Storen-Revere trade is shaping up as one of the great lose-lose moves of all time.

Nats-Cubs games this year have been a blast. Shout out to the Mets for this brief losing spell allowing us to relax and enjoy the awesome matchup without having to stress about the division race for at least a couple days. Plenty of time for that starting this weekend when we head west and they get the Braves at home.
Interesting question raised on the Baseball in the District podcast: who would you be willing to deal for Andrew Miller? They talked most about a Taylor/Difo package, which seems like a no-brainer from our end and not nearly enough from the Yankees perspective. On the flip side I think it's safe to assume Giolito is off limits. What if it takes one of Turner, Ross or Robles though? Do you do it? I think I'd be OK with losing Ross, not so much the other two.

I wouldn't trade any of the three for Miller. Agree Ross is the one that I'd be most willing to trade, but they are going to need him to start in the playoffs, with Gio's regression in full swing. Not sure if there's a lesser prospect they could trade in a package, like Fedde or Cole, but not sure if that would be enough.

Yeah, the downside to losing Ross this year is a little troublesome, especially if we assume Giolito won't be ready for a postseason start. But Miller's under contract for two more years, we're not gonna get him for cheap. I don't think a package highlighted by Fedde or Cole would do it. I'm thinking maybe Ross/Difo as the headliners. I like Ross, and I loathe trading young cost-controlled talent almost as much as Rizzo seems to, but he's such a good fit for the Yankees that he might get us something to put us over the top this year.
On the other hand if we only go 1-6 against this version of the Cubs with only one game against Arrieta and none against Lester maybe we shouldn't put too many eggs in the 2016 basket.

Maybe I'm overrating what I know (and underrating what I don't), but I'd take five more years of Ross ahead of Miller's two. But I'm also pretty low on relievers in general. Solis had a rough outing last night, but don't think the late lefty upgrade from Solis to Miller exceeds what they would lose from Ross.

I generally lean that way when it comes to the value of relief pitching too, but I'm open to the possibility that us sabermetric types might undervalue it a bit. I'm also trying to anticipate what I assume will be a big-time seller's market on relief pitching and Miller in particular. If they're not happy with their current options they'll have to do something. Obviously Chapman is the better fit because of the much lower price tag and his relationship with Dusty, but I'm trying not to think about having to root for that guy closing out games for my favorite team.

I used to want good things for the Padres. But I hope we sweep them and win the next three games by ten runs and then Wil Myers demands a trade as payback for this string of games with 10:10, 10:40(!) and 10:10 start times.
Miller would instantly be the best relief pitcher and closer. So think of Miller as the closer, Papelbon as a set or mid inning reliever. Solis role would not change with Miller on board.

ETA: I said out loud, "God dammit Dusty" when Grandal stepped up and he didn't make the change. It was sooooooooo easy to see what was gonna happen. I already follow a dumb team, I don't need this aggravation.

If nothing else I appreciate that they've chosen the later innings of games on a west coast road trip for the current crisis. Almost none of us have had to watch it. I was a little annoyed when I woke up to pee, checked my phone, and saw that they'd blown the game. But it still easily beats watching disaster unfold in real time. Hats off to Dusty and the bullpen for being so considerate in this respect.
I am not sure Rivero is going to be trusted with high leverage situations at this time. He has been really shaky of late. That would leave Oliver Perez or Sammy Solis if you want a lefty there.Doctor Detroit said:

Yeah good point, maybe not Rivero but I think a LHer of some sort was in order. I'm not even sure who was throwing but I thought they had said Rivero.
Agree on Papeldoosh, he's created a vacuum and the Nats pen has some issues. Baker leans heavy on his starters anyway, but probably doing more of that because of the injury. They are going to probably need to trade for some bullpen help. I don't think they need Chapman, I think they need a guy like Madsen or Rodney or some steady vet. Those guys and maybe another cheaper middle reliever of some sort (preferably a righty) would be great.

The last week has been a helpful reminder that baseball is the worst and I should try to find a way to stop caring so much about it. Or at least that I should take a fistful of Advil PM when the Nats are on the West Coast so I don't end up staying up until 2 AM watching a horrible game.

Turner getting the start in CF tonight. I'm a bit surprised since I thought they felt he needed more work on his defense at SS, but I guess the road trip made them realize immediate help is needed.

This yellowhammer Giolito has is pretty sick. That and the easy 96 on the fastball and you can see why he's so highly rated. Walks probably are gonna be an issue for him early in his career but when this guy learns how to pitch he's gonna be elite.

The fact that Degrom is still dominating w/o striking guys out should scare you, not make you feel good.
If they had even a minuscule of concern over Matz, he wouldn't be sniffing the mound this Friday.
