What’s your preferred :style: ? Chronograph dial, simple face/dial, all stainless bracelet, rubber/fabric strap? Prefer oversized look or standard size?
Good questions. I'm open to either of those for face/dial, no strong preference. I think I'd prefer a fabric strap of those two options, and probably standard size. I'm not a very big dude and I'd expect an oversized look could look silly on my wrist. But I'm open to options.
Are you looking for more of a dress or sports watch.
I suppose I'd say dress watch, but something that doesn't look "over-dressy" in a casual setting, if that makes any sense.

Maybe a pilots watch? A bit of in between dress and sport. Stowa makes some cool designs in the 2k range - the Flieger.

If looking for more dressy would check out Nomos.

They do smaller and larger versions.

I just started getting into watches. Been watching a bunch of Youtube videos about automatic watches. I finally took the plunge and bought a very beginner friendly and affordable automatic watch. I got the Orient "Mako II" flat black. It's freaking cool. I love it. I think there will be more to come. I don't know if I'll ever take the plunge on something super expensive. I could collect a bunch of these affordable ones and be happy. And I've always been a fan of Japanese engineering.

I bought my wife jewelry for her birthday and at the store they carried Shinola watches. I really liked the automatic divers they had. If I did splurge I might get one of those. They don't get good reviews from the watch collecting youtubers, but mainly because of value for price is not good. My 50th birthday is coming up so I might ask for one.

What watch would you ask for with say... a $1,500 budget for your birthday? Maybe I can get some ideas.

I am not a fan of Shinola watches but that is my personal taste as I think they are bit overpriced for what you get. I think the Orient you already bought is a much better purchase . Of course, first and foremost, you should buy what you like so try not to let what others say impact you to much. So I guess, ignore my first sentence.

Given you mentioned dive watches here are a few that I like that are in your price range. Also, one that is a bit of stretch of your budget but you always need something to aspire to.

Baltic Aquasaphe - https://baltic-watches.com/en/products/aquascaphe-blue-gilt I love this watch and its vintage inspired feel. Very good buy for the money. I recently saw it in person and will likely buy this in near term.

Seiko Prospex Turtle - https://seikousa.com/collections/prospex/products/srpe93 Classic Seiko design and while big think it wears much smaller when I have seen in person. This is a real tool watch and doesn't dress up well but awesome for what it does. Also a lot below your budget.

Seiko Prospex 1965 - https://seikoluxe.com/products/spb143?_pos=1&_sid=b6c6ffe65&_ss=r Recreation of Seiko's first dive watch and I think it looks great. Smaller on the wrist then the other Seiko

Zodiac Super Sea Wolf - https://www.zodiacwatches.com/en-us...r-automatic-stainless-steel-watch/ZO3552.html Classic diver with a Chronometer grade movement from a great Swiss brand that is a bit under the radar. This version also has a cermic bezel which you don't see that often at this price point and the whole bezel is lumed, which is pretty cool. They also have a bunch of funkier versions of this watch if you search their website. Though don't think those other ones have ceremic bezels.

Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight - https://www.tudorwatch.com/en/watches/black-bay-fifty-eight/m79030b-0001 Probably out of your budget but a great dive watch with a great inhouse movement. I personally like the blue one but other colors as well.

If you are interested in other types of watches (dress, chronograph, etc.) I can give you some other ideas

This is an awesome list man, thank you! I learned a lot just from checking out the watches. I’ve not heard of some of these, and they are very cool.

I’ve never heard of Baltic and I agree, that watch looks awesome. I like the Japanese movement. They look amazing. I like the whole Aquascaphe collection. I think my favorite is the Steel Bezel SB01 with the tropic blue band.

Im not a big fan of the Seiko Turtle. Not sure why, but I just don’t like the shape? I love the 1965 you linked though. In general I like the Prospex line as a whole and there are a lot of great options in that price range.

I believe I’ve heard of the Zodiac Sea Wolf but I never really looked into them much. The whole Super Sea Wolf collection is cool. I like some of the versions that have non-traditional colors. And the price is right there too. I keep looking at the one with the blue rubber strap, a white face, and an orange ring around the face. I also like some of the all black versions too. I always think of a gift as the time to get something you wouldn’t normally get so the non-traditional colors could work for this case.

Tudor is also a brand I’ve never really heard of either. So they are kind of a sister company to Rolex… that’s pretty cool. And yes, that watch is stunning. I like it with the blue soft-touch strap too. That is an excellent pick for a ‘reach’ watch. Or a watch to keep in mind… down the road.

I have been very on the fence about Shinola but I just don’t see me ever buying one for the reasons you mentioned. I mean, this whole list has options that are way better quality than the Shinola at the same or lower price. I tried one in-person and I really like them and I keep questioning in my head… am I just deciding not to like them because no one else does? Like you said, buy what you like… but at some point you have to consider value and that’s where they lose me. The other part I don’t necessarily like about their dive watches is the case is incredibly tall. It wore well when I tried it on, but it sticks out a lot.

You gave me a lot to think about, but my birthday is about 5 months away. In the meantime I’ll probably get another Orient. After getting the Mako I would like to get either another Mako in blue or a Kamasu. Then maybe experiment with different straps. This is fun, and with Orient you can get into it, and kind of figure out what you like without breaking the bank. Thanks again!

So for my wedding nearly ten years ago my wife "bought"* me a Rolex Oyster perpetual date stainless steel watch. I've worn it nearly every day since and this thing is a tank.

*By "bought" I mean shortly after the wedding my father-in-law, who owns and runs a chain of jewelry stores, handed me the bill. Learned a quick lesson about what it means to be married!

I'm in the market for a watch, but I've got basically no idea where to start. Never really been a watch guy but I've wanted to get myself something nice, something that will last. Ideally something that isn't situational, would look alright with a suit but would look alright for normal everyday-wear. Budget roughly $2k, but could stretch to $3k if it's the right watch. I know we're not talking ultra high-end here but it looks like I should be able to get something decent. Any ideas? Where should I be looking?
I think getting into watches is a really awesome journey. If you are self-proclaimed, never really been a watch guy, I feel it could potentially work out better if you take a different approach. I’ll put it out there and let you decide.

As I started watching youtube videos about watches I learned a lot. I learned all about specifications to look for, all the different styles of watches out there, and what watch makers are out there. And you know how on youtube it seems everyone has a different opinion on… well just about everything? I actually found some advice that I heard several times, from multiple different sources, that started to resonate with me. And I took it. The advice was basically…

If you are just starting out, go with a dive style watch. It can be worn casual or dressy. Is a very common style watch, and a good place to start. And get an Orient because they have amazing specifications for an incredible price. It’s pretty much unanimous that Orient watches are the king of value.

So my advice for you would be… go to Long Island Watch , filter down to the Orient brand, and pick something out that you like. The somewhat unanimous king of value of the Orient watches is the Orient Kamasu. They sell for about $270. In house movement, screw down crown, sapphire crystal, 200M water resistant at an amazing price. The other most popular are the Orient Ray and Mako. They sell for about $170 and the only thing you don’t get (compared to the Kamasu) is the sapphire crystal. Unfortunately the Ray and Mako are not labeled on the website with those names… so you may have to do some research to figure out which is which, but they are well documented on youtube.

When you order, get a cheap watch tool. You can get one for less than $10. You could get an Orient Mako or Ray and a tool for the grand total of $180. When you get it, play with it, figure out how to set the date, wind it, set the time. Figure out how to size the bracelet to fit on your own so you don’t have to go somewhere to adjust it. Then just wear it. See how you like it. Think about what you like and what you don’t. Eventually, maybe look into different strap options. You could go from dress to casual in some cases by simply switching the strap. Dive watches look great with rubber straps, NATO straps, and pretty much all style straps.

The way I see it is, if your budget is 2K to 3K, taking $180 off that budget isn’t going to make a big difference and will give you a ton of information to help figure out… what you like. It will make it such that, when you go to make that big purchase you will be much better informed and make a better choice. What if you go spend thousands on a Tag then find out you don’t necessarily like the style? The work on the front end will pay off in the long run. I bought the Orient Ray in black and I am loving it. Best of luck.

Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight - https://www.tudorwatch.com/en/watches/black-bay-fifty-eight/m79030b-0001 Probably out of your budget but a great dive watch with a great inhouse movement. I personally like the blue one but other colors as well.

My local jewelry store is an AD for a new small watchmaker NORQAIN. I saw one in person and thought it was OK, but I have been looking into them more. It looks like they get their movements from Tudor. I really like the Adventure Sport and it's not too expensive.

NORQAIN Adventure Sport

You can get it on a bracelet for about $200 more. Hmmmm...

Don't know much about them other than small independent watchmaker that is fairly new. Seems like they are making quality pieces. They seem a bit like Baltic which is a new small independent selling quality pieces for reasonable prices (reasonable in the relm of watches is of course a loss term).

I finally found a store near me that had a great selection of watches and included a lot of brands: SEIKO, Tudor, Breitling, Grand Seiko, Shinola, Hamilton, Bell & Ross and probably a few others. The main reason I went there was to look at SEIKO’s. I have been drawn to them since I started getting into watches because I’ve always loved Japanese engineering. I’ve driven mostly Japanese cars, owned many Japanese motorcycles, and as an engineer myself I’ve always liked their philosophy. Excellent performance at a great value… I guess is how I see it.

So I was really hyped on SEIKO and excited to try on their watches… and… I just didn’t have that great of a reaction to them. I liked them but that was about it. The one I liked most was an SPB31 . The blue dial in person was way more amazing than any pictures I saw online. It wasn’t even on my radar but was by far my favorite of the group. SEIKO to me just seemed… chunky? A lot of them I felt the bezel was too thick for the dial. Some I felt were too tall compared to lug to lug. I just didn’t like the proportions I guess?

Next I tried Tudor, and the Black Bay 58. I noticed online that they are 39mm so I really wanted to see one in person because my Orient is 41.5 and I was looking to go bigger. My wrist is right at 7” so 39mm fits well but I am realizing that I like a bigger dial. It might have to do with the fact that my eyesight isn’t getting any better… but that’s another story. When I tried on the BB58 it was smaller than what I wanted. I liked the Pelagos at 42mm best.

As I was walking to the Shinola display the saleswoman I was working with started telling me about an event coming up for Hamilton’s 130th Anniversary. She told me that the company was originally based in Lancaster. I know they are known for their affordable field watches, so I stopped at the display… and that’s where I found “the one”. They make a Hamilton Khaki Navy Scuba Auto in 43mm which is big, but what I like as personal preference. And I couldn’t believe how nice the dial and face looked in person. This is going to be my birthday present this year. It doesn’t have a day/date complication, but that doesn’t really bother me. The movement, look, and other specs are excellent. And I love all things Central PA. It’s where I grew up and currently live.

I found out several things during my visit. I definitely like the brushed silver look as opposed to shiny. The Hamilton and Pelagos finish is nearly all brushed and I really like that. The SEIKO’s mostly had the shiny look. I also found out that I really like bigger case sizes. I think 42mm+ is what I like best. And the 43mm seems just right. I also learned a lot more about Hamilton than I knew before the visit.

The rep told me if I go to the anniversary event and buy a Hamilton they are giving away some serious swag. A gift bag full of local Lancaster PA goodies… and potentially a 1 night stay at a historical hotel in downtown Lancaster. I’m going to be calling her back to reserve the watch. And I’m thinking of going to the event and asking them… so if I bought the blue one and the black one today, would you be willing to offer a discount? Maybe… not sure about that yet haha.

I was recently at a family event and was talking to my uncle about watches. He informed me that my great uncle owned at least 1 and maybe a few Omega watches. My great uncle passed away years ago, and my uncle inherited some of his things and had a few vintage watches in his possession. He showed me pictures of 3 watches. One was an Omega Seamaster small seconds (more like a dress watch), one was a Lemania chrono, and one was a chrono that appeared to be branded by a local jewelry store. My great uncle also had a watch box that said 'Omega Speedmaster the Moon Watch'. Unfortunately the actual Moon Watch was nowhere to be found. This got me very interested in Omega though.

I went back to the watch dealer and decided to look at all the different brands they had, and just take the afternoon to hang out and try on as many watches as I wanted. It was the day before Thanksgiving and I had the whole day to myself. I tried on several Omega, Tudor, Tag, Breitling, Bell & Ross, Grand Seiko. The one I liked most on my wrist was the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M. Knowing that my great uncle was a fan of the brand, it helped put it at the top of my wish list. I also loved the Speedmaster Moonwatch.

I was talking to my dad about the watch on Thanksgiving and I asked him if he would get it for me for Christmas, and he agreed. We actually went back to the jewelry store the next day and he bought it for me as an early Christmas gift. I also got an extra black rubber strap which gives it a whole different look: Omega Seamaster 300M rubber strap. I'm pretty sure I have been banned by my wife from making any more watch purchases... at least for now. But now I have my eyes on the Seamaster Aqua Terra. Still a Seamaster but a little more dressy. I'm definitely an Omega fan. They are really cool watches.

Nice!

I have an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Sapphire...the new 3861 with the tapered bracelet, window back casing to see the moving gears, the applied Omega Logo at 12:00 (not screenprinted) and the polished links. Absolutely love it. There aren't too many watches in existence that I'd choose to have on my wrist over this one.

Duuuude... that is an amazing watch. I tried it on and I am pretty sure I looked at it on my wrist and said out loud "whoooooaaah" and my face lit up. I was sincerely surprised at how much I liked it on my wrist. The Speedmaster is definitely on my wishlist as well.

Reason I say I was surprised at how much I liked it is because I never really saw myself wanting a chrono. All my life I have been a 'simpler is better' type of person and I always thought the multiple dials on the cronos were too much. Then, I saw that my great uncle was a fan of the crono. And one thing I am also learning is that... you don't really know if you like something until you see it on the wrist. I went into my visit with an open mind and the goal to try on as many watches as I could. When I saw the Speedmaster on my wrist I was blown away. Very cool.

I generally like chronos, but the subtlety of the Omega speedy chrono dials with them being the same black as the face makes it extra sleek. You get the chrono affect without it being too busy. Allows the Omega logo and dials stand out. Did you happen to see the lume color and brightness on it when you go from bright room to dark. An amazing neon green glow. So cool.

Those are all great watches and can't go wrong with any of them. I am a bit of speedmaster fanatic so I of course think it is a great choice.

On the old box, did it have a moon crater design?

I agree the subtlety is what makes it work. It looks very 'classic' and yes, sleek. I did not check out the lume. I'll have to check it out if I visit again.

That’s bizarre. I think I would’ve thanked him, and acted like it was a gift receipt.

As someone running a chain of jewelry stores, surely he could’ve afforded to gift it to you?

No... it was a gift from my wife. Some sort of spouse to spouse gifts (I got her a bracelet IIRC). I didn't expect him to foot the bill and he only charged us his cost. He also paid for a significant portion of the wedding. I don't fault him at all in this.

My comment was more so how quickly I learned that two spouses financial obligations become one upon marriage as she bought me a gift but together we had to pay for it.

Those are all great watches and can't go wrong with any of them. I am a bit of speedmaster fanatic so I of course think it is a great choice.

On the old box, did it have a moon crater design?
The picture I saw was an open box. The box was green and the watch sat on a roll vertically in the middle. If you were looking head on at the watch face, on the left side of the roll it said "Omega Speedmaster". On the right side of the roll it said "The MOON WATCH".

The picture is no longer in my text messages from my uncle and I didn't save it to my phone. I was trying to find a similar picture online but I can't find one. I am starting to wonder if it was a fake. One reason being, I noticed that where it said "The MOON WATCH" it was like written in 3 rows. "The" at the top, "MOON" middle and "WATCH" bottom. So it looked like MOON WATCH was 2 words, but that isn't how Omega represents it on the website or new boxes. And there are a lot of Omega boxes on ebay. I would think I could find one??? Odd.

ETA: Now I'm confused because I found 2 boxes on Chrono 24 that match the description I am talking about but one listing says it is from 1977 and the other says 1967 and I can't find any other examples.

1977 Speedmaster
1967 Speedmaster

ETA2: I'm finding more examples now. It looks like the box was from the 1975-1977 range

*By "bought" I mean shortly after the wedding my father-in-law, who owns and runs a chain of jewelry stores, handed me the bill. Learned a quick lesson about what it means to be married!

Hmmm. Unless that is customary in some culture, still seems odd. I can't think of any other context where the recipient is expected to pay for their "gift."

Whatever, it sounds like you rolled with it, and put the watch to good use.

Wearing it right now, actually. Wonderful piece and, now no regrets.

I forget the name of the "gift" but my wife and I gave each other gifts when we did the "first look" or whatever. So, again, it's from her (not my FIL - she just hadn't paid for it in advance so hence my lighthearted point that I learned quickly that my wife's purchases were also mine now).

Not a big deal, I was just interested since the crater box is rare as hens teath and actually worth a bit on its own. Other boxes not so much and it sounds like it wasn't the crater box.

This is my grandfathers pocket watch.

Other than it being a Hamilton, can anyone tell me anything else?

Get the back off so you can find the serial number and possibly other identifiers. I don't see hinges or a pry point in your pics so the back may unscrew. Cool watch, for sure a Railroad style.

I better let a pro handle this. Me and delicate....anything doesn't mix.

ETA - I got the bezel off and uploaded the pictures.... Pics are pretty good but I cant read all of the numbers/letters

IF the serial number is 100JH5

ETA again:.... Oh.
IMPORTANT:
Be sure to use the serial number on the movement (the works) of the watch. Do not use the serial number from the watch case.

Agree with Ron on getting the case back off to see the movement. If you got the front off it should be similar to get back off (actually easier). Also, would put the front back on and protect it since the dial is the most important part of the watch and very fragile.

Below is a link to a site that has a ton of info on pocket watches and has an entire section on Hamilton pocket watches. My guess is the watch is from the 20s or 30s given the enamel dial. They started using a cheaper alternative in the 40s which tend to crack so that is my guess. Info from the movement and any other trademarks you can find would be helpful to date the watch whch you can do using this link.

I stayed up waaaaay too late last night trying to find the exact dial but didn’t.

I didn’t know I could take the back off. I’ll try later. Thanks!

Also…. Now that im seeing more of these….OMG there are some super nice pocket watches out there and they seem far more affordable/attainable than wristwatches. At least at first glance.

Yeah, there is a lot less demand for pocket watches and there are some awesome vintage ones with great cases and dials. People just don't use them anymore so a lot less expensive.

Also, on dial it looks pretty close to a few so seems legitimate dial. Printing looks pretty good as well so think dial is original and not redial (someone repainted the dial) but some of the outer number placements seems odd (where ithe red runs into the black) but I am no expert on these.

Either way it is a cool old pocket watch and a great memento of your farther. Personally I would get the movement serviced by a watch maker but not make any other changes to the dial or the case. Basically get it in good working order but don't make restoration type changes to it.

Super cool.

Thanks.

This is the exact one I have presently

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Automatik Edelstahl Herrenuhr...

for $2,415 for sale from a Trusted Seller on Chrono24

I recently upgraded to an Omega and gonna put my Tag Heuer up for Sale soon.

If anybody is interested in dipping their toe into the luxury watch game, this is a great starter. Still love it, but it's just collecting dust now with my new piece.

Bought it 5 yrs ago for $2,500, and in pristine shape. Probably looking in the $1,200 area. Still have the original display box, etc. If interested shoot me a DM, I'll give priority to a FBG

https://www.jomashop.com/tag-heuer-watch-caz2010-ba0876.html

Finally gonna get around to listing this Tag Heuer Chrono for sale. Hoping to get around $1K for it. Any advice on best place to list it? Is eBay the best bet?
Damn. Wish I had been tracking. I bought a knockoff Tag Heuer in Turkey a couple months back for a couple hundred bucks. For a few hundred more, I'd have been happy to buy a real one. Hmmmm.

This is what I got. Yours is different enough. Decisions, decisions. And I'm a Wisconsin dude too, though I live in CA now.
Yours is cool, but more casual with the black and rubber strap. So a full stainless could be a good switch up. If you are interested, let’s chat. At least with me you know you’re getting an authentic Tag. I have all original receipts and papers.
Offdee, you still around these parts?

Thanks.

Yep I’m here.
Did you ever get the black face and black bezel watch you want? Did you sell your Tag? Still flirting with adding a watch and still like the one you had, though I think I'd want to change the band. My issue is I'm a bit fickle.
I’ve had my Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch for a couple years now. Love it.

I still have my Tag…haven’t really made any real effort to sell it. I spent months trying to find a black rubber strap for it to have it be a more casual watch. Long story short, it’s pretty impossible to find a replacement band for it. The part where the lugs attach to is curved so impossible to match up with a new band. That watch was meant to be full stainless.

If you have a number in mind for what you’d pay for it, send me a private message.

I am eyeballing this Omega Seamaster 300 watch without band. It's only 10 years old, but has a bit of age and is not the most modern looking watch. Pretty cool.

If this one is close to what you got, well done. She's a beauty.

I am slowly falling for the Longines Avigation.

I inherited a couple watches from my uncle, including one that may have some value. I'm thinking of selling them and getting something I like with his memory in mind.

Thanks for the note. I'll give it some thought.

Nice!

I have an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Sapphire...the new 3861 with the tapered bracelet, window back casing to see the moving gears, the applied Omega Logo at 12:00 (not screenprinted) and the polished links. Absolutely love it. There aren't too many watches in existence that I'd choose to have on my wrist over this one.

typically, I like a stainless look.

Can you help ?

[ics or links plz

Hi!

I'd like to set myself a goal. If I hit it, but A really nice watch like Omega, etc.

typically, I like a stainless look.

Can you help ?
What’s the question? And more importantly, what’s your budget?

Offdee, you still around these parts?
