It's that time again!!!! When I started the first WC pool at FBGs it felt like it was a losing proposition, and that I would garner very limited interest, but we did really well when it comes to participants. This time around I expect an even better turnout, since interest both here and in the US in general has exploded. I expect (hope), that we will have 50+ participants...

Link to the World Cup discussion thread: link

The Rules:

All participants pick the outcome of every game in the group rounds (6 per group and 8 groups) and will receive 1 point for each correct pick. Picks will be made by entering in the number of goals each team will score, and you will receive points by picking the correct outcome, not score (Home team winner , Draw, or Away team winner) The goals scored are used to calculate total number of goals in the tournament (tie breaker). Maximum points for this round are 48 points.

The results entered for the group stage automatically calculates who advances to the Round of 16, stage two of the tournament. Each correct team picked receives 2 points. In order to advance to the round of 16 teams have to finish 1st or 2nd in the group stage. 16 teams will play in this round, so the maximum amount of points awarded is 32.

8 teams will advance from this round, and for the quarter final round you will receive an additional 2 points per correct team picked. Maximum amount of points are 16.

For the Semi finals you have 4 teams, and each correct semi finalist receives 3 points for a total of 12 points.

For the final game, 5 points for each correct team will be awarded, with an additional 10 points for the correct winner of the World Cup.

Besides the team points, you will also receive an additional 10 points for the Top Scorer in the competition. I have used the names from several sportsbooks to decide which players to include. You could also pick "the field" if your player is not included.

The max amount of points possible in the Pool is 138. In case of a tie between two participants (although unlikely) we will use number of goals scored in the tournament (Group and knock out rounds) to decide a winner. The closest to the total will win the tie breaker.

Payout and fees:

I have an excel sheet available, at the link below, for everybody to make their picks and I will publish standings online after each game. You will also have the option, within a master sheet that will be available for download after all submissions are sent in to track your own progress. I will include formulas that will automate your results in the sheet, if you input the outcome of the games.

The fee is $20 for each submitted sheet, with 3 places paid if we get more than 20 participants, using 50%, 30%, 20%, or a winner takes all if less than 20 people joining in. In order to receive a payout, the $20 must be paid in full before June 5th (1 week prior to tournament start), via paypal.
I will publish a website, not related to FBG's, so if you want to invite people from the outside, they don't have to know about the forums.

The spread sheet is here: link and needs to be submitted to me via email before June 5th (7 days before the start of the tournament to allow me time to create the master sheet and web page).

Picks will be made by the 1 X 2 format, which means home team winner (1), Draw (X) or away team winner (2).
I'm confused by the instructions already. I just opened up the spreadsheet and I see the first group game has a box next to Brazil and a box next to Croatia. What do I put in the boxes if i think Brazil will win? What do i put if i think Croatia will win? What do I put if I think they will draw?

The goals each team will score...

The reason for this is to allow a calculation of the total number of goals (one of the tiebreakers), and because correct group standings

So what does the 1 X 2 format have to do with anything?

You get graded on correctly picking home win, draw, or away win.

Maybe I should update the wording...

But question about the spreadsheet - how are you handling penalty shootouts in knock-out stage?

2-2 draw becomes 3-2?

Modified rules text to:

I hope this is more clear...

You enter 2-2, then pick the winner by using the drop down next to the score box.

(e) for extra time

(p) for penalty winner

Gotcha, thx - although wouldn't extra time goals be counted the same as normal goals?
Damnit... You are right... I will modify that in the sheet...

Great feedback. There could be additional errors as well, so keep it coming.

Ugh, now you lost me again. How does this impact the scoring of the pool?
The number of goals impacts the tiebreaker, but all you need to get the points for the round is the correct team to advance. You get the same amount of points for USA over Brazil winning 1-0, 9-1, or 2-2 (US winning on penalties)

I am going to modify the sheet, as extra time goals do count officially...

This is really cool charv. I just did a first cut of all the games for fun. I know you're redoing stuff so this won't be my official sheet, but I like it.

actually, I don't need to redo the sheet... The extra time flag (e), won't affect the calculations anyway.

and thanks! :)

Yeah, the spreadsheet is super cool. I like how it shows the total goals and goals per game in reference to past World Cups, which is a good little idiot check.

Pro tip: Be careful if you make changes to your group game scores after you've already picked your knockout games. If you originally had Argentina as F1 and winning the Cup, but then changed the scores enough so that Bosnia becomes F1, the spreadsheet will substitute the teams in so you've now got Bosnia as champion.

Ended up with Portugal v Argentina in the final

jfc if that happens

eta: now I need to go trim a few goals...don't think there are going to be 203 scored

Took Greece down to -0- goals....#### Greece

Anyone having luck getting this spreadsheet to open on an Ipad?
I have created all this using Windows and Excel, and haven't tested on iPad. I do own one, so I will try and create something that works this weekend. What spread sheet application are you using for it?

Also, anything additional you find in the sheet that I can fix would be very good to know. I'm sure I have other details not there, or maybe not working 100%.

No, please don't bother. What you have is fantastic do not do anymore work. I was just wondering if anyone got it to work in case I was doing something wrong.

When I clicked on the file, it brought up "excel online" but then it said there was a certain feature that was not supported.

I don't know if it matters, but when I click on the link, it gives me two options - I download the zip file which opens up the spreadsheet.

I have Argentina / France with the Golden Boot going to your favorite player, Karim Benzema.
