***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (1 Viewer)

I have to think they'd draw 10,000+ on Sunday if they opened up general admission at a moderate price and gave part of the gate to charity. I'd head down to watch if they offered this up.
That would be a blast! It'd be great energy for the team as well. The most fun I had watching the Chicago Bulls was when they opened the United Center with $10 tix to watch the Bulls ...who were playing a playoff game in Utah. It was all dedicated fans/families ...none of the take-it-for-granted types and corporate groups who don't make much noise. What fun it would be to sit up close and just cheer on the guys in a casual environment.

Young was selected the most valuable player of the American League championship series Thursday, Oct. 18, after batting .353 with two homers and six runs batted in in a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees. The designated hitter and former Twin capped his latest clutch performance with a run-scoring single in the first inning of an 8-1 rout in Game 4.

"Unbelievable," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "He got hot again this year at the right time for us. And, you know, he stepped it up under the big lights. Not that they are not bright all year, but they are a little brighter this time of year. He stepped it up two consecutive years for us. And the MVP, what a tremendous honor for him."

Young became the first player with four game-winning RBIs in one postseason series, according to STATS LLC.

Tigers need to ink Young to a long term deal in the off season

Delmon will be back. Mr. I will make sure of that. I would go the arbitration route. Do post season stats count in arb?

Can we just sign Delmon to a post season contract?

Why will he be back? There is no place on this roster for him with Victor coming back. No way that Illitch/Dombrowksi are dumb enough to let two postseasons color their perception enough to sign a back-up DH who isn't very good between April and September.

Speaking of V-Mart is he with the team right now? I know he can`t play but has he been at the games and traveling with the team?

BTW, none of the teams in the American League scared me and neither do any of the teams in the National League. Anybody looking at what the Tigers starting pitching has done in the last couple of months should be scared.
St. Louis doesn't care who the other team is or what style of play is required, they just win. If you're not scared of St. Louis you haven't been paying attention. How the match-up looks on paper and how each team is playing might matter in most cases, but not against the Cards.
This.
The Cards still have not qualified to play in the World Series as of yet. I am thinking the Giants may steal this thing.

Tigers expected to pick up Peralta's option but could still look to improve at shortstopBy Danny Knobler | Baseball InsiderOctober 21, 2012 7:40 pm ET Even with Jhonny Peralta's strong performance in the American League Championship Series, the Tigers could well look for someone else to play shortstop next year.First, though, they'll almost certainly pick up the $6-million option on Peralta's contract, which they must do shortly after the World Series. The market for shortstops is limited, and people familiar with the Tigers' thinking say that even if they decide they want to look for an upgrade, they believe Peralta at $6 million would have trade value. The Tigers would then need to find a shortstop elsewhere, most likely through another trade. Why wouldn't the Tigers just keep Peralta, who batted .389 in the ALCS against the Yankees and made a few key defensive plays? The main reason is Peralta's lack of range, which hurts even more because the rest of the Tigers' infield is also limited. When the Tigers decided to bring Peralta back last winter, they expected Brandon Inge to be their third baseman. Since Inge can cover a lot of ground, the thought was that Peralta would have more help on the left side of the infield. Then Victor Martinez got hurt, and owner Mike Ilitch decided he wanted to sign Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera became the Tigers' third baseman. While Cabrera played better defense than many expected, he does not have great range.
It is not so much lack of range, it is lack of hustle. I think he has shown good range during the post season, diving for balls and making some really nice plays. His bat is adequate and he has a good hands and makes very few errors. It is really just a matter of him wanting it. He can be one of the best short stops in the game when he wants to be. And in the playoffs he has been.BTW, Delmon will be starting in the OF in NL parks. It is a tough call and I am sure Tiger fans will groan a bit when a ball or two drops in where most out fielders would have gotten there.

I love the armchair ability to determine how much a guy “wants it”. Peralta is who he is. He has relatively weak range but is very sure-handed when he gets to it making him an average shortstop. Seeing him make a couple of great plays in the playoffs and somehow turning that into a narrative that he doesn’t really try all that hard the rest of the time is rather insulting.

"Leyland said the team will leave for its next destination -- either San Francisco or St. Louis -- at noon on Tuesday. If tonight’s NLCS Game 7 is rained out, 2 1/2 hours after Tuesday’s start time."

So if it's still tied they just take off and fly around in circles till somebody wins.

I have played infield all my life. I know how to be ready and how to get a good jump on the ball. I have seen Peralta in person and on tv numerous times. Unless the balls are in easy range, Peralta half-asses the effort. The diving play he made during the playoffs were a rarity during the season. During the season, I saw numerous balls he had a play on but refused to get dirty on. Take it for what it is worth, but that is my observation and I am sticking to it. :banned:

Delmon is earning himself a multi-year deal right now, and it isn't gonna be with Detroit. He's an OF liability and we already have a DH. One if not both Dirks and garcia will be at the corners, and we still have Boesch and Castellanos along with Quinton Berry as other options.

Leyland is a moron for using Anibal in game 3 and Scherzer in game 4. /fortherecord

I guess Scherzer would be available in a game 7 but when you are talking about using another starter in game 7 instead of the guy you put out there, you're already in trouble.

I like for Benoit the fact AT&T Park yields the least home runs of any Major League park. Fister won't go the distance, sooner or later the bullpen will have to do their job at the back-end. Using Smyly, Porcello and Al Al in one or two batter situations will help and this is not an American League team we are facing as far as hitting goes.

I think the Giants are the best team we've played, but they aren't the Yankees at the plate. Whatever anyone thinks, the Yankees put a guy up there who can make the game closer at just about every spot in the order. Giants aren't like that, they hit in bunches and depend on Posey and Panda to hit the ball to the gaps with runners on. Right-handed relievers are preferable, Sandoval is better as a right-handed hitter, Posey, Pence and Scutaro are all righthanded. This is why Villarreal should be on the ### #### roster!!!!

Can hardly think about work right now. :excited:

Motivated by a couple stories I read on the Shark Pool board in Bobby Layne's Lion fan lament thread, I thought I'd state something I think is cool.

When I was a wee little lad (5 maybe?) I didn't realize how cool it was that my parents took me to a Tiger game and I was able to get an autographed ball from Fidrych which is in my son's room now, under glass of course.

This past spring break we went to St Pete Beach as we usually do....we were able to catch the Tiges in ST when they were visiting Toronto's home park in Duniden. It was a really hot day and since it was spring break the Tiger fans probably outnumbered the Toronto fans 10-1 so there were a ton of people hoping for autographs. We just camped out on the 3rd baseline....we waited and waited and thought we were going to strike out until suddenly out comes Verlander. He yells out "I'm only signing for kids!" and goes all the way down the wall signing for every kid there. My 8 year old son idolizes Verlander and Miggy so he pretty much filled his drawers when Justin was right in front of us. I think my wife threw her panties at him too...not sure.

Anyway.....generations of Tiger fans and memories under glass in my son's room. I know it's not the best story out there but it's pretty exciting for us.

Come on Tiges!

I saw Carlos Guillen pushing a stroller at somerset mall.

I have an autorgraph from curtis granderson, caught the tiger v mets at port st. lucie Fla spring training.

I once saw Milt Wilcox walking around a shopping mall with a camera on his shoulder.
My buddy sold his old snowmobile to Milt a few weeks ago. Posted the ad and when the guy showed up to buy it he paid with a check. My buddy looked at it, looked at him, and said "that Milt Wilcox?" :lmao:

While in high school, Mickey Stanley used to help our neighbor (his girlfriend) baby sit my older sister, twin brother and I when I was a toddler. I'm told he even got teased about it at the Grand Rapids sports banquet where he was the H.S. athlete of the year. My dad stayed in touch with him a little bit through the years. '68 WS was special, then, with Stanley switching to shortstop so they could get all their big bats in the lineup.

I think even Ray Oyler would like this story.

I know I've #####ed and moaned about this team all year (and with good reason) but this team is very even-keeled. They were down three games with two weeks to play on September 17th, lost a game four in Oakland up two in the ninth and blew a four run lead vs the Yankees. I think they are the same old dumb bunch of players tomorrow.

This is one of those situations where if you said a few months ago that Detroit is in a situation where they have to win four out of five games to win the World Series, you would happily take it. It kind of sucks from a few days ago, but this team has the pitching to pull it off. Just not sure when the bats will show up.

I really think if Sanchez pitches a great game Saturday and wins the game, Detroit will resign him for a fairly high price, perhaps just north of $12 million per.

:goodposting: No reason to not think they can do it now, I spent most of the season thinking they wouldn't make the playoffs.

Teams like KC are going to aggressively pursue him, we'll see. Win game 3 and 7 first and go from there. :)

We need to save this talk. The thought of them going a whole year with those 4 starters and a healthy Victor Martinez batting 5th just gives me a boner and makes me want it to be next year. :excited: Theres a time and place for boners, and that isn't now or here.

I told a friend (a huge Sox fan) at church this a.m. that we're going to dress S.F. in Sox' uniforms, which will assure us of winning the next four games.

OK..who is gone from this year roster??

Berry?? Has to be a defensive replacement/pinch runner at best.

Delmon?? Most productive post season hitter again.

Sanchez?? Like his pitching but will he cost too much?

BB?? Looks to be gone for sure

Papa Grande??- Gone

Benoit still has a year on his deal but he has to be on thin ice as well.

Fielder did nothing to help the Tigers in the Series..poor ABs and just seemed like it was too big of a stage for him. Thought for sure this was his time but it was not meant to be.

The low point of the series was during game 3. I had premium seats at face value seven rows behind the Tigers dugout so it was interesting to see things up close in a game like that. Bases loaded, one out and Berry up. So you think that he might hit a slow rolling ball like he always does to score a run, something the team needed so badly. Instead what is a part-time player at best was over-matched by a guy who was on the ropes. That really took a lot of air out because you score a run there and Cabrera comes up with a chance to be special. He wasn't, and everyone around us just exhaled. I don't think I've ever been in a crowd that wanted something so badly, even a run would have helped us all but we got nothing. Still a fantastic experience, hopefully I get back to see one soon.

The team who is always joking around, always loose, always like the laid back guy who never lets anything get to him looked tight. Fielder was pressing and frustrated, he was so awful this postseason. Infante, Peralta and Delmon all had very good postseasons, AJAX was himself but nothing much beyond that. Miggy was ok, but with Fielder struggling so bad he was pressing also. Starting pitching was terrific, I loved Sanchez's enthusiasm last night and he was really worth trading for as he and Infante really did make the team better. I think VMART would have precluded a drought like they had because he has good at bats almost every time he goes up there. I never thought they'd get this far without him, I think he is so critical to this team's offensive success.

The layoff has little to do with it IMO, teams with a longer layoff since 1995 had like an 8-7 record in the World Series. Giants were just a better team and they made absolutely no mistakes, and got every roll their way. That bunt in game 2, the missed call at first on the Fielder DP yesterday and the Pagan double off the bag in game 1. Wasn't meant to be, I really thought all along that we could steal one we weren't supposed to have this year and I would have been more than just a little fine with it.

They need to add depth. They need a corner OFer who can platoon with Garcia and Dirks, they need someone who can hit RHP and they probably need a SS with more range. No real way to bring Delmon back, guy was money in the postseason but wasn't good for months during the regular season and he really is a DH only guy. Not sure the interest in him but if they want to bring him back with the idea of using him in 110 games or so as the #2 DH and platoon LFer, I'm fine with it. He just can't be a central character in the 2013 story. Also Lloyd McClendon is a dumbass.

The bullpen needs to be addressed but some of those issues can be addressed from within. Al Al, Villarreal and Benoit are all solid and with the young guys, trending upward. Schlereth will be back, Coke is a LOOGY, and valverde will be gone. I like signing a guy like Soria to pitch at the back end, resigning Dotel and finding a power arm jettisoned from another organization. No high priced guys needed, just more options to go to.

Starting pitching is set IMO, Smyly is the 5th starter and you use Oliver or Crosby as #6. Sanchez is likely gone, they need to sign Scherzer to an extension and they need to realize they sucked a lot in 2012 and still won the AL. No way I thought they'd ever win the AL once they got into May, so I'm not all that sure I can be disappointed in the ending. I don't know how they got there to be honest, the shock of them actually getting to the World Series probably offsets the shock of them getting swept.

Always sad when the baseball season ends, I miss it already. :(

Great season by the tigers, they need to go after some bullpen help, Capps FA from MN would be perfect, also I think they need to resign D. Young, he is money in the playoffs (not the WS so much), if Young will resign for a reasonalble amount.

Most teams would love to be the second best in baseball, and have players that the tigers have going forward.
