Because Victor Martinez is a switch hitter and exponentially better? Plus Martinez wants to catch, I'm guessing he'll catch if he comes.

I guess I assumed VMartinez would be a DH. If that were the case, he's clearly not exponentially better. Just a little better.

Last I heard he would do both from the #5 spot in the batting order, depending on whether AA would be catching that day. Someone else would DH the days VM would be catching.

Adam Dunn is moving closer to a deal, maybe with the Tigers, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. SI's Jon Heyman tweets that Dunn and the Tigers are in serious talks. The powerful left-handed slugger is known to be among Detroit's targets. He could fit as their regular left fielder, perhaps getting the occasional start at DH or first base. The Tigers have been aggressive so far this offseason, and to secure Dunn this early they'd probably have to guarantee four years.

He is a terrible defender, strikes out a ton, and his power game may not be suited to Comerica. I would much, much, much rather they sign Werth. But I guess Dunn would be my third choice outfielder.

Then again, if they sign Dunn to DH and then Werth to play outfield, I'll be over the moon. Hell, even if they sign Maggs to play outfield I'll be ecstatic. I just cringe when I think of Dunn roaming the expanses of Comerica.

I'd think the owner would be thinking the same thing at this late stage of his life. He has the Stanley cups, a WS ring would be the final piece when you consider he once played baseball for this organization.

If Illitch is just opening up his pocket books, fine, I guess but if there is any sort of budget this year (yes, I know how much $ is coming off the books) this is a really dumb deal. I like Benoit and it's great seeing him pitch healthy again like he was showing signs of 3 years ago but like Valverde last year that $ needs to be spent on the offense.Sweet.

That is reasonable money. I'd like to know what massive upgrade on offense they would make for $16.5 for 3 years. Perhalta and Inge got $11.25 for two years. Report: The Tigers are close to signing Victor Martinez
A report from Ignacio Serrano of ESPN Deportes has the Tigers on the verge of signing Victor Martinez for four-years, $50 million. Serrano says that it’s all but done and is pending a physical.
I’ve yet to see anyone else report this yet, but we’ll obviously update it when anything new comes in.

Ken Rosenthal has confirmed. Speculation is also that if Martinez is signed, the Tigers will immediately remove themselves from the Adam Dunn bidding.

I think I wanted Werth more than Martinez, but I've always been a big VMart fan. I think they'll use him at catcher at least some, especially when facing LHP and he's a perfect #3 hitter as he works walks, doesn't strike out a lot and switch hits. He has more slugging power as a RHB but his splits are pretty close over his career.
LHB: 298/363/462
RHB: 302/379/482
He also has a career .922 OPS when the game is late and close, which is nice. He's not that great of a catcher, but he's serviceable there and to get the most out of the contract I think he has to play there.

The owner decided he wanted to overpay Benoit, nothing I can do about that. He's a guy I think works for the team and it's not my money.

A few years ago, my sisters (now ex) boyfriend was one of the guys who served as "judge" for the Buccaneers cheerleader tryout. There was nothing about him that said he should get such an assignment. Worked at Raymond James financial, ordinary guy all-around. Think he knew somebody in the organization and dumb-lucked his way into it. Said it was without a doubt the greatest day of his life. Nothing but unbelievably hot chicks in their underwear dancing around and trying to get him to like them enough to give them a high score.

lol, that's good stuff.When I worked for FSN they would always stuff us in this waiting area in the Palace and the Pistonettes or whatever they were called were always back there. They would be stretching, throwing their pom poms around and generally being great whores. After the Malice at the Palace I was there for every game for like a month, and actually ended up getting to know a few of them after work. They made $75 a game, and weren't allowed to talk or associate with the players at all. Preggo cheerleaders=bad business model. At least the NFL cheerleaders get calendars, Pistonettes get to be in the background of Anderson window commercials.

Yes, Guillen's contract and spot on the roster is great.Glad to see there won't be a Dunn, still should swing for Werth. Really like the V Mart signing and contract, big step up from that Benoit head scratcher.

Not sure why there is such little love for Dunn. Yes, he is a horrid fielder. So isn't V-Mart. But Dunn is about as consistent a hitter you will find. He will play in 160 games, and will strikeout out 200 times, but he will have an OBP right at the .380 mark and will hit 40 homeruns and drive in a 100 runs.
