With his run-scoring single last night, Cabrera (29 years, nine days) became the sixth youngest player to reach 1,000 RBI in MLB history. Only Mel Ott, Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. have reached the milestone sooner. miggy best of the best

Great outing by Smiley..had great command all game. Valverde on the other hand has zero command of his pitches right now..dam near blew this one.

I know Leyland tries to get the right match-ups, but I get a little bothered when he changes pitchers so frequently. He had guys getting good, quick outs on Friday, but then he'd pull them and put in a new reliever. It's risky running the bullpen down and then relying on Valverde, as he did today.Speaking of Friday, how bad a night did Avila have? 8 runners left on base, then he allows a passed ball in the bottom of the 9th. Ouch.--Fun for me today - a young man who is a student worker in my university office (for three years now) has become a starting pitcher for our D III baseball team. I had the chance to go watch them play (total attendance: about 50) as he was today's starter. They won, 2-1, as he threw a complete game four-hitter. He has told me how he tries to channel some Verlander when he's on the mound (he's from south central Wisconsin).

This has been driving me nuts too. He'll pull Dotel after a quick 1-2-3 7th or pull Coke after a single hitter. That burned us on Friday. I wish he would start using Dotel in the 8th/9th moving forward - he's earned the chance. Has a O.00 ERA in 9 appearances and teams are batting .150 against him. He's closed before too. If Valverde or Benoit don't like having "their" inning any longer they should pitch better then. They shouldn't be entitled to automatically pitch those innings just because they want to. That's the Brandon Inge mentality.

Dotel seems so relaxed and in control. Valverde looks like a mess. 31 pitches in one inning.

Detroit Tigers' Doug Fister to make rehabilitation start Wednesday for Triple-A Toledo

NEW YORK -- Detroit Tigers right-hander Doug Fister is ready to return to the mound.

Fister will make a rehabilitation start Wednesday for Triple-A Toledo in a game against Pawtucket at Fifth Third Field in Toledo.

Fister has been on the disabled list since April 8 with a left costochondral strain. He suffered the injury after pitching 3 2/3 shutout innings against the Boston Red Sox on April 7 in the second game of the season for the Tigers.

Fister threw a lengthy bullpen session Saturday and felt great afterward.

"I'm trying to not overdo it, but I feel real good and very strong," Fister said. "I'm just trying to take it slow but at the same time letting it fly, and it feels pretty good. I'm just trying to work my way into it. "

It is not clear whether the Tigers plan for Fister to make more than one rehabilitation start before he returns to the rotation.

Young was placed on the restricted list earlier Saturday to be evaluated under baseball's employee assistance program. He was arrested early Friday on a hate crime harassment charge following an encounter at his hotel during which police say he yelled anti-Semitic epithets and appeared intoxicated.

With young's past issues, I hope he gets the help he needs.

That was a huge win by the Tigers....If Smiley turns into a reliable starter, that will be huge. It looks like they are bringing Fister back at the right pace and being cautious. Just hang in there boys, it will get better.

I really don't know what to do with Valverde. I do not want him in during one run games. You can't move him into the setup guy, because he will really suck at that. They still need innings out of him, but damn, I would start splitting some of the closer duties or letting the starter go a little longer.

Inge claimed by Oakland. Interesting. If there is ever an anti-sabremetrics player out there it is Inge. Tigers play at Oakland in about two weeks.

How does that work, do the As have to pick up Inges contract for the rest of the season? If so the Tigers should be giddy!

...a rare player without an a-e-i-o-u in either his first or last name.

It doesn't work that way.
The Tigers will have to pay Inge the remainder of his $5.5-million contract for this season, plus a $500,000 buyout for his 2013 option.

1 of 3 in New York isn't bad. I figured they'd lose today vs. CC, have a good shot at winning Sat. with Garcia starting - the Friday game was the toss up and we gave it away. Hopefully Fister gets back in about a week or so. That would push Below back to the pen, which is where he pitches best, so that should help the pen get better. Schedule softens up in May so hopefully this team can start hitting its stride this month. The bats will be there it's just a matter of seeing whether Benoit and Valverde can get going. Otherwise my blood pressure is going to go through the roof.

Seems to be Leylands MO. I hate his lazy Sunday lineups. Give guys a day off vs. a 4 or 5 starter not CC Sabathia. Brad Eldred. Jesus.

A Kelly error away from taking 2 of 3. The Yankee right field line at 314 is a joke. Everyball hit to right looks like it is going out.

--LF Delmon Young, placed on baseball's restricted list Saturday following an early AM incident outside the team hotel Friday, will undergo doctors evaluations Monday under the Major League Baseball procedures and could return to the active roster shortly thereafter. Independent doctors will evaluate Young and report back to Commissioner Bud Selig's office and to the players' association's doctors. The examination process was detailed in the new Basic Agreement that big-league owners and the union (MLPA) agreed upon in 2011.

"If he is cleared to play, then he will be playing," GM Dave Dombrowski said during a dugout media briefing Saturday. "This is a new rule. This is an automatic provision with alcohol."

Young, 26, was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated harassment. Alcohol was reportedly a factor. Dombrowski was quick to add that facts surrounding the incident are not fully known. "I don't know what took place and I don't know that anyone knows 100 percent what took place," Dombrowski said

Sounds like young will be back sooner then later

It seems that Young has some problems he needs to deal with, some people close to the team were not surprised when they heard this news.Young is only 26 and has potential yet Tampa and Minny both dumped him for basically nothing. For Minny to give Young away to a divison rival was puzzling.

Flowers are blooming, the Kentucky Derby is this weekend, and Max Scherzer is reworking his delivery because he forgot how to throw a ####### baseball over the offseason.Just a typical May.
lol
He's right. last year they sent him to Toledo to get right and he came back to have a terrific second half. I would rather sit him out a start or send him down (I think he has one more option) instead of running him out to throw four innings and give up seven walks.

How fast years fly.... it was 2010 when they sent him down. He sucked at the major league level all of last year.

At home and in the second half of the season he was good in both the past two years. 2010

He was also outstanding in the Yankees series and good in his first game vs Texas in the playoffs. Problem is that second game vs Texas and these early season performances show he is virtually unable to have a consistent streak. Too many walks and just horrible full count numbers. The talent is there, we all know it...but the positive results are few and far between.

BOSTON (AP) – Third baseman Brandon Inge agreed Monday to terms on a contract with the Oakland Athletics.

Jim Rogash

The newly acquired Brandon Inge, who spent the first 12 years of his career in a Tigers uniform, said he's happy to be with his new club in Oakland.

Once they put him on the 40-man roster, the A's must pay Inge only a prorated portion of the $480,000 minimum — or about $412,000 — of the $5,308,743 he was owed when released by the Detroit Tigers on Thursday

seems like a low cost utility player for the A's

Oakland has a roster full of low cost utility players

That is what he should have made with the Tigers.

BOESCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just coming in here to ##### about Lloyd and how he should have been fired three years ago, but Brennan saves him for now.

Why isn't Potato Fat pitching this inning?
Because it's Benoit's turn to give one away?
I would have preferred Dotel, but Benoit a better option than Valverde for sure. Can't really blame him anyway, one hit off Jonathan Dirty Sanchez is terrible. If you let him, he'll walk home a run an inning. Hopefully they get Abreu, they'd have one guy outside Miggy and Prince with plate discipline.

Fister's Triple A outing - 4 innings, no runs, 2 hits, 5 K's. Tentatively slotted for Monday night in Seattle.

Saw this on the Tigers' website:

"Smyly is the first starting pitcher since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981 to give up fewer than two runs in each of his first four Major League outings. Smyly is also just the third pitcher in the last 50 years to do it."

LF Delmon Young is eligible to come off the suspended list Friday and faces an uncertain reception once manager Jim Leyland decides to put him in the starting lineup again. Leyland proclaimed Young won't start Friday but that he could be inserted at some point if the situation warrants. He was suspended for seven games after being arrested and charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault in New York last Friday. Young might be kept out of left field and used as the designated hitter if public reaction is negative, and being in the outfield would subject him to taunts from fans

As a guy who has had very little confidence in Max, I have this odd feeling he's about to turn it around. Local radio and national sports media all piling on...."What's wrong the Tigers?" I think this team is glad to see April go and is about to put it all together, going on a serious run. Loads of talent and we all saw in spring training and the early season how good team chemistry looked. Prince was a great addition and this team is about to explode.I'll step down now.

Jim Leyland is going to give Brad Eldred a shot to show he can take his hot start from Triple-A Toledo and translate it to the big leagues. But Leyland doesn't need a scouting report on what to expect from him."One thing that's very obvious: He knows what that bat's for," Leyland said. "He's going to swing it. When he centers it, it goes a long way, and sometimes he's going to miss it. That's basically what it is."Basically, we had one of the hottest hitters, maybe ever, in the Minor Leagues. Take a shot. Bring him up here and run him out there. I'm not going to put a timetable on it, but I think you run him out there until you think that he can or can't do it."
