Jim Leyland is going to give Brad Eldred a shot to show he can take his hot start from Triple-A Toledo and translate it to the big leagues. But Leyland doesn't need a scouting report on what to expect from him."One thing that's very obvious: He knows what that bat's for," Leyland said. "He's going to swing it. When he centers it, it goes a long way, and sometimes he's going to miss it. That's basically what it is."Basically, we had one of the hottest hitters, maybe ever, in the Minor Leagues. Take a shot. Bring him up here and run him out there. I'm not going to put a timetable on it, but I think you run him out there until you think that he can or can't do it."

 Is there a point to this or are you just having a laugh at the kid's expense?
Eldred's shot didn't turn out to be as long as Kelly's or Inge's. In retrospect, the Leyland quote comes off as random hardball cliche spewing but at the time it was good enough for me to take a flyer in a deep league.

Posting from my phone going off of memory, but the Tigers struggled around the .500 first half of last year. And then Fister arrived and they finished 15 games over. Getting Fister back will go a long ways towards curing some of Detroits problems. Getting concerned with having someone who can close games though.

After this series they have to play 19 of 24 on the road, WTF is that? :loco:

They should win Sunday but tomorrow we at least need a quality start out of Max. Is that too much to ask for? I'm not even asking him to win the game, just keep it close.

I must admit the Tigers/White Sox is my favorite professional sports rivalry these days.

Boesch needs to move down behind Fielder vs. righties.
BB needs to be 5th or 6th all the time. Fielder really seems to be pressing at the plate and needs a big day to get rolling. I was expecting Prince to be ripping the ball all over the place. I still really like Dotel..that pitch that Beckam hit out was a good pitch way of the the strike zone.Sm :D ly seems to throw the ball without much effort at all. One of the smoothest deliveries I have seen in a long time. Seems like he can always go longer than Leyland lets him.

The Tigers saw only those 20 at-bats from the soon-to-be 35-year-old infielder this season, but they weren't pretty: two hits, no walks, a .100 average, six strikeouts. Last Thursday, the Tigers bet Inge wouldn't be a productive player again. He feels otherwise.

"It was frustrating, because I had 20 at-bats," Inge said Monday before the game. "Twenty at-bats is nothing. Twenty at-bats is not even enough time to really see what you're capable of. Some guys go 0-for-40 sometimes.

"I hit the ball well. I had two hits, but it was a matter of being a foot right or left and I probably could've had 10 hits out of those 20."
 I can't recall a player in any sport that has as many excuses as Inge does.

--DH/LF Delmon Young made a public apology Friday and declared he is not anti-semitic. Young was activated off the suspended list but did not play in Friday night's game. "I want to apologize," Young said, "but I put myself in a bad position. I have nobody to blame but myself." He said he was following an alcohol treatment program under the guidance of a counselor. Young met with a Detroit area rabbi earlier in the week and vowed to help with youth programs. "I certainly want everybody to know I'm not anti-semitic. I wasn't brought up that way. I grew up in a diverse community." He was arrested a week ago and charged with aggravated assault. "I know for a fact I wouldn't be talking to you if alcohol wasn't involved," Young said. Manager Jim Leyland said afterward there were two points, in the eighth and ninth innings, where he was going to pinch-hit Young had more hitters come to the plate. "I think I'll probably DH him the next two days," Leyland said.

Doesn't matter, he will continue to be pulled at a certain pitch count 90-100 for the foreseeable future. Last year was his first professional season and he pitched 125 innings at Lakeland and Erie. Throwing him at his current pace he'll hit that inning number in July. In his first game he hit his pitch count in the 5th, and they pulled him. That's exactly what they should do as we don't want this guy hitting a wall in June or over-exerting himself and getting hurt. The Tigers as we've said over the past two or so years, have a ton of pitching talent in the system right now. Smyly was rated the third or fourth best by most experts but he has the most polished and major league ready stuff. I thought he'd be the 5th starter when camp broke because he's the lefthander most ready of the three (Crosby, Oliver, Smyly) and because I think pitching in college has its advantages as far as competition. Crosby probably has better stuff and Oliver is close, but both have to establish control which usually takes time. Turner isn't even 21 yet, he can use more time in the minors but we'll see all of them this year with injuries, double headers and them conserving Smyly's overall pitch count.

His K rate is encouraging and he reminds me of John Tudor with his delivery. If he ends up being anywhere close to John Tudor, the Tigers will have a gem. I think he's a #3 starter type but he has a lot to learn and we'll see what happens when teams get a second look at him.

Will they shut him down even if he continues to be our second best starter? Or even third best? I would rather see him miss a start here and there now than to not have him available later. Who knows what is going to happen but he does seem for real.

If he continues to be a valuable starter in the rotation you'll likely see them start to conserve innings around the all-star break or put him on the DL for a head cold. Young pitching is the hardest to predict but if they conserve him the right way, and we're seeing a good start to that, then he could be a factor into September.

Watching the game last night I kept thinking....he reminds me of someone. Then it came to mind. Smyly reminds me of a young Tom Glavine. I know it is way too early to project what kind of career he will have..but the way he worked the batters in and out reminded me of when Glavine was painting the plate.

Leyland is usually cautious with pitchers. It is a smart stratey. Going into the playoffs with a Verlander-Fister-Smyly rotation would be awesome.

Top of 9th: :wall:

Great pitching by Scherzer. Then a solid, quick 8th inning by Benoit. So why not stay with Benoit in the 9th??? :badfeeling:

First batter: single. :wall:

I think they've already blown 5 games where they had a lead after the 7th. Last year, they were something like 78-0 when leading after the 8th. What a difference a year makes. It seems like if Benoit isn't giving up a lead then it's Valverde. Max joined the JV and Smyly club today - great start, deserved a W, and the bullpen squandered the game away. All momentum from that Friday win, a bounce back start from Max went right down the toilet. Hopefully the Sunday lineup Leyland trots out tomorrow can put up enough runs to win the rubber match.

Valverde should be ok but he was really lucky last year. Problem with blowing this one is it takes that sweet taste of last night away just like that.
If Benoit gets a 1-2-3 inning with low pitches they should let him start the 9th for awhile. On another note did anyone see the HR by Dunn. I was listening to The Ticket this morning and everybody on the radio said they have never seen a ball hit harder at Comerica.

Not all no-hitters are meant to be.Toledo left-hander Andy Oliver was rolling for 6 1/3 innings without allowing a hit Saturday before Columbus' Beau Mills delivered an RBI double. The Tigers' No. 4 prospect regrouped and retired the next two batters to complete his most effective outing of the season as the Mud Hens edged the Clippers, 2-1.Oliver (2-1) was charged with one run on one hit and three walks while striking out six in his sixth start. He needed only eight pitches -- all strikes -- to breeze through the fifth inning and retired 12 straight batters heading to the seventh. After Matt LaPorta drew a leadoff walk, Oliver struck out former International League MVP Russ Canzler. But Mills drilled a 2-1 pitch high off the right-field fence for a double. It marked the fifth outing in which Oliver has allowed two runs or fewer, and the lefty pitcher didn't see much variation between Saturday's start and his previous work this season."I don't think [my stuff] was anything different than what I have had in my last few starts," Oliver told the Toledo Blade. "I was able to make pitches in counts to keep them off-balance."When they put the ball in play, we had guys there and they made the plays."Toledo manager Phil Nevin disagreed only slightly."That's as good as I have seen him," Nevin told the newspaper. "The stretches where he 'loses his groove' have gotten shorter and shorter the last three outings."

They did it today. Dirks hitting second, I think it should be Avila but Bosech needed to be moved. They can move him back once he gets into his groove.AJAX crushed that ball, guy is on fire!

Boesch should never go back to 2nd. Use Dirks, Kelly, or someone that can make contact, bunt, and advance a runner with a ground ball/sac fly. Jackson has been getting on so much this year and they are constantly pissing away chances to move him while on base.Dotel and Coke looked good again as usual. Benoit looks like he is starting to find his groove - hopefully it's just a slow start like last year. Valverde needs to figure out how to hold on a runner. Guy gets on first and it's an automatic double these days because he steals every time. Good bounce back today to get the series win. Starting pitching was top notch this series and that was with our 3 through 5 guys.

Unless Valverde gets his splitter working, this is gonna be a long season. What is the first hitter in an inning hitting against him this year? .600 with a .800 OBP? Jesus.

Good series win, all close games. They just aren't hitting but I'm hoping that will come. Starting pitching concerns are subsiding, Porcello has been great in five of six starts and Smyly has been a nice surprise. With Fister back and maybe a Max rebound, I think we'll be just fine.

That is an understatement, more like the envy of the league. I couldn't imagine trading our starters for anyone in the league. A healthy Fister cures a lot of ills. The emergence of Smyly makes the rotation downright scary. Valverde is the biggest pitching concern at the moment.

I was driving in the car listening to the game and Price said Porcello was hitting 94-95 with his fastball. That seems to be a little faster than usual.

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Brandon Inge belted his first home run in an Oakland uniform and knocked in four runs overall, as the Athletics downed the Rays, 9-5, to close out a three-game set at Tropicana Field on Sunday.

Inge, who signed with the A's on April 29 after spending the last 12 seasons as a Detroit Tiger, launched a go-ahead three-run blast in the third and plated one more in the seventh.

Good to see Inge picking it up, classy player

I would guess that Inge hasn't had a 4 RBI week in the last few years, let alone in one game.

Because the Twins are 6-50.

I'm going to the three game series vs the Pirates in two weeks and I got seats in the first row right behind the Pirates bullpen.

If you have any warm greetings to pass on to Jason Grilli, I'd be happy to deliver them.
