He is the king of the meaningless 3 run homer in a 9-1 ball game and his defense is why I am still reluctant to buy into 'advanced statistics' that try to convince me he doesn't suck at short.

I agree with Boberly. I don't see how it's fine to fire Knapp last year when the pitchers were struggling and then not hold Lloyd accountable when the hitters are struggling. Rod and Mario (who drive me nuts because they never say one thing critical about a player - yes, I know they are bought and paid for by the Tigers, but still) are talking about how Cleveland was taking the approach yesterday of making Fister throw a lot of pitches - when have the Tigers ever taken any type of approach to hitting aside from the caveman approach of "see pitch, swing at pitch." Minimal walks and the hitters' free swinging approach lets the opposing pitcher expand the strike zone. What a shocker that they are swinging at bad pitches instead of getting into hitters counts and taking hacks at good pitches.

If Leyland doesn't want to hold Lloyd accountable then Dombrowski needs to do something. I like Dombrowski but if this team doesn't make the playoffs and he sticks with the same coaching staff throughout the season and built the roster, I don't see how he can be comfortable keeping his job.

After the Minnesota series they play the Yankees and Boston. This could get really ugly real quick if they let the status quo continue. This team hasn't won two games in a row since April 17-18 @ KC. Pathetic. At least they were able to avoid a long losing streak -- until now. We'll see if they can get the games back vs. Minn.

On a positive note the pitching has been real good lately. So, it's not as if the team is a complete trainwreck. We just need to find a way to get the bats turned around. The talent is obviously there - firing Lloyd is a sensible step in trying to get the most of the talent we have on paper though. It's been 40 games, he's had plenty of time to work with the hitters to get them to play to potential - too many of them aren't. That's on Lloyd. What's the definition of insanity? - doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Time to try something different DD by firing Lloyd.

At some point you stop feeling the pressure and just play. Not sure if that woke them up or not, we'll see. The next thing will be the team finally hits and the bullpen blows it. I disagree with needing bullpen help though, maybe one arm. Luis Marte who was supposed to be key in this pen will finally be ready to pitch this weekend and I think him along with Below, Dotel, Coke, Benoit and Valverde will rebound nicely. The starting pitching has been borderline great lately with a few bumps in the road and that should continue to be a strong suit. I'm gonna stop caring for now, it's a long season and they have the ingredients to be good. I can't do anything else and the #####ing is wearing me down since I'm not usually that kind of fan.

It is little things like this that are killing the Tigers, although this was not a little mistake. Miggy should have been on second with a stand-up double and would have scored on Fielders single. Instead they ended up with Miggy on second and Fielder on first after the single and no runs.

The issue is that Prince is a mediocre fielder at 1B, Cabrera had turned himself into a very solid first baseman but Miggy is a below average third baseman. With Rayburn at second they are like my softball team in the field.

Thanks!!! I suppose, if nothing else, he'd be a nice roster addition when rosters expand for the playoffs (assuming we're in them).

After Saturday's 6-3 loss to Detroit, the Twins at 15-31 with the worst starting pitching in baseball, by a wide margin. The rotation's earned-run average of 6.60 is the worst in baseball, more than a run worse than runner-up Colorado (5.55). Opponents are batting .321 against the starters. The Twins also rank dead last in allowing hits (313) and home runs (49).

If the tigers could only play the Twins everyday, they be divisional champs by the 4th of July.

Kelly can't sacrifice the runner, can't turn double plays, can't get a runner at first on a bad bunt, can't hold runners (Avila had no chance today), leave bases loaded two innings in a row, Cabrera can't get a fly ball to score a run, Fielder can't make up his mind about a runner going from second to third and only a terrific diving play by Porcello got the out at first. It's not just the hitting, they aren't doing much of anything right.

Like Berry though. Adds a new dimension to this team and he plays with some energy/enthusiasm. Rest of the team looks like a bunch of walking zombies. Austin is back Friday for the Yankees series. Will be interesting to see what they do with Berry then. He deserves to stay up. Too bad he doesn't play 2B. Worth likely will be sent down.

For all the crap Delmon gets around here I'd rather have him through 2012 than Raburn. If Worth doesn't go down, then Raburn should go. Raburn is Inge-like at the plate and can't play defense - recent examples being his botched play at 2B today and his pathetic attempt at catching that foul bowl in RF late in the series opener. The guy offers nothing of value to this team if he's not hitting well due to being a liability in the field. I honestly think he's the worst defensive player I've ever seen play at the MLB level. The thing about Delmon is that since his incident in NY he's had to keep his mouth shut about wanting to play in LF. So, he has only been a DH since then and is no longer another liability for us to worry about in LF. I'll take that.

They should just play him in LF move Dirks to RF and DH Boesch. The outfield defense will be solid. I suspect Berry will bat 9th once Jackson gets back. We'll see though, you just never know with Leyland. Might as well ride the hot hand while they can though.

So several days ago the WSJ had a blurb on this before Verlander's last start, and now the Chicago Tribune posted a list as well. JV now has 52 consecutive starts of 6 innings or more. He's in very elite (HOF) company here:

DH Delmon Young might miss Detroit's Tuesday night game in Boston because he's due in Manhattan court earlier that day for a hearing in relation to his arrest April 27 in New York. He was charged with misdemeanor aggravated harassment that entails targeting someone for his or her religious beliefs. Young could face up to a year in jail if convicted. The Tigers have a night game against the Red Sox and a flight has been arranged for Young, but the length of the hearing could keep Young from making the flight. They need young's bat in the lineup, hoping he makes it back
