They showed a lot this weekend, they hit when they needed to and they came back in every game winning the last two. Getting to that insane Reds bullpen was nice, Boesch with a great at bat and several others like Matt Young with solid plate appearances. That rally was everyone but the two big guys, that's what is encouraging. Also good job by the bullpen, tough when your starter is out with an injury after three innings. Kind of a rough outing for Marte but Villarreal was solid once again, and Benoit was terrific as usual. Valverde looks different since his injury, seems like he might be ok now after looking terrible the first two months. They need to have a 4-2 week or better, no question.

Went to bed with the Tigers losing big and woke up this morning to a nice win. If A-Jax and Berry can keep it up and we get A-Dirk back the runs should start coming. Who will be the odd man out in the outfield?? Think a platoon of Delmon and BB at the DH spot is in order.

You guys got the right idea but I have a feeling Berry gets used as a backup & pinch runner a lot and also as a late inning defensive replacement.

I agree, which I'm fine with if Boesch removes his head from his ###. Unlike Delmon I think there's a chance that happens. If we can deal Delmon for just cash that'd be fine by me. I doubt it happens, so my more realistic hope is Victor is able to return in August and Delmon is relegated to bench bat.

For a team that was a ML worst 5 for 39 with the bases loaded, getting hit by a pitch is solid work in my book. :mellow:

DD you have to admit that Coke did his job. Nobody hit the ball hard..the only problem in that Coke got the Cubs to hit ground balls.

DD you have to admit that Coke did his job. Nobody hit the ball hard..the only problem in that Coke got the Cubs to hit ground balls.

Coke should not be out there for 50 pitches, doesn't matter whether he did his job or not.On Porcello I'm guessing you posted that as shtick. His line drive percentages are up, he's giving up more homers but almost everything else is the same from BABIP to type of pitches used. His ground ball percentage is 52% from 51% and I'd have to see a chart that diagrams the balls that may or may not have been fielded by someone else. He's also woeful at holding runners, and so are a lot of the pitchers on this team. Laird is not a great guy to throw folks out but Avila's percentages are down this year also after being the best at throwing out runners a year ago.

The problem is that he wasn't very good last year and many of us thought this would be his breakout year, which hasn't happened. The fielding may play a small part, but it is a VERY SMALL part of Porcello's struggles.

Ryan Raburn is back.

The Detroit Tigers this morning recalled Raburn from Triple-A Toledo. They sent him there two weeks ago to work on his hitting.

Raburn technically takes the roster spot of pitcher Drew Smyly, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a blister.

Right-hander Doug Fister will be activated from the disabled list to start Saturday's game against Colorado. It's unclear whose roster spot he will take.

Note: The Tigers' game at Baltimore on July 14 has been selected for Fox Saturday Baseball. The first pitch has been moved from 7:05 p.m. to 4:05.

Well, started with a double knocking in a run. However, he made a major baserunning error soon after and was thrown out at 3rd. Baby steps.Cubs getting good wood on JV. Offense needs to make it happen today and give JV some confidence.
 
Thank you, AJ! Whew! Good win, and the Tribe lost, so we're sneaking up on them. One at a time. A few bats looking better this series - Boesch, Peralta come to mind - although a quiet series for Cabrera and Fielder. Fielder looked like he really wanted to knock one onto Waveland Ave. while in Chi-town. Let's keep it going against Colorado!

Wrigley Field just had their most attended 3 game midweek series in it's history.

I watched a bit of yesterday and today. Tigers fans were prominent when it came to crowd noise and definetly made that possible

Yeah last night in the 8th you could really hear them, radio crew estimated 7k or more there near the end. :thumbup:

I was one of them. Couldn't make it to Chicago in 2006 but didn't want to miss this series. Took the train and el to Wrigley Field. The train and Wrigley Field were packed with Tigers fans. When the Tigers fans chanted "Let's go Tigers" the chant filled the stadium - it was like being at a home game. Weather was perfect, fans were cool to each other and it was a great game. Can't ask for anything more than that! It would be nice if MLB could have the Tigers/Cubs play more often with the interleague games lasting throughout the season starting next year. With Boesch finally starting to hit and Jackson back, the lineup is starting to score some runs. Peralta's average is even starting to slowly climb up. Good to see Fister back. Key question now is whether he can stay healthy. Need to take at least 2 of 3 this weekend the keep the momentum going.

The Tigers fans booed him pretty good when he first came to bat. He got the double and then in Ryan Raburn/keystone cops fashion proceeded to get thrown out at third after a grounder to short with one out. :wall: Will be interesting to see how he's treated at home when he plays.

That was also the worst hop I've seen on a non-Astro turf surface in a long time on that two run single. Ball bounced a foot in front of home plate and went over Peralta's head. :loco: But why throw a strike to that guy anyway? Splitter not working again and just a terrible play on the bunt.

Tomorrow Fister returns and Leyland will probably take him out after 70 pitches and we'll have to watch Pukeonen hold a lead. :banned:

 
Also Detroit has the lowest OPS from the DH position in the AL. Know why?

Crosby and Young down, golden arm Thad Weber returns.

Crosby has work to do on the walks and control is obviously an issue. This was his first cup of coffee and like Oliver he has a ways to go before he's ready to contribute. But Crosby is probably a #3 starter going forward and he has the repertoire to be ready soon. His curve needs to be more effective in the zone however against lefties because they are taking that pitch and then sitting on the four-seamer in fastball counts. His cutter is still a work in progress but that pitch would let him throw fastballs in fastball counts but I don't think he can throw that one for strikes either yet. Good second start, bad first and third. I think we'll see him later this year and he'll probably get better and better with each call-up.

Matt Young stinks, Tigers bench is tragic and I thought they were a worse team without Raburn to be honest which is scary. Hitting might be coming though, AJAX seems to be right back where he was when he got hurt and Boesch looks like he's starting to hit. Need Avila back and I think he can DH while that hammy fully heals up. While others love to hate Inge and raburn my target is definitely Delmon who has to be one of the bigger underachievers in the past ten years in baseball. If he would go up there and actually look at a few pitches he might be a lot better, but he refuses to do so. This tells me he feels like he has to swing at the first pitch because he can't get behind in a count, meaning he's a mental midget.

Need these next two, ROX are really bad.

 
A healthy Fister cures a lot of problems. Not all but a lot. Still have to get the bats going, get the bullpen healthy and in order, and do something to improve the infield defense. But fister does make them contemders for the division.

Not only was it great to see Fister back and pitching well but he was able to leave the game healthy. Who'd have thought it would have taken until June 16 for him to get his first W.The bullpen has been turning things around. There was a stat yesterday during the telecast showing the bullpen has the 3rd lowest ERA in MLB in the last 25 games or so. Benoit is pitching great, and Villareal has been a gift for us. If Dotel can come back and Al Al actually gets healthy the bullpen should be the least of our problems since we won't have guys like Putkonen and Thad Weber in it any longer. I just wish Benoit was the closer going forward instead of Valverde but Leyland is obviously not going to let that happen. Sometimes Leyland, with the way he handles the bullpen, is the team's worst enemy when it comes to the bullpen instead of the pitchers themselves. Has anyone heard about Schlereth? Is he close to being healthy? Just curious if he will be an option to return at some point. Maybe once he gets healthy, that will be another option for us. The bats are looking better too. Jackson coming back has been huge. Boesch is hitting better as well. I still wish Leyland would bat Boesch lower in the order instead of #2. He's not a fit for that spot. Maybe he gets dropped when Dirks returns. We'll see what Raburn does too. I don't like the guy but our options at 2B are so horrid we might as well see if he can get his bat hot in the 2nd half as in years past.The infield defense is what it is unfortunately. It's not as if they are going to move Cabrera or Fielder from the corners. Jhonny is entrenched at SS. So, the only position that will be a revolving door is 2B. The best thing the Tigers have going for them is they play in the AL Central so they're going to get a chance to hang around. They just need to get hot at some point.

Agreed! I like having AJ and Berry at the top of the order. Their K's are too high, but that speed is nice.Now they have to figure out the bottom of the order, starting with a decent #5 hitter to protect Fielder. Boesch and D Young are not producing and have K/ABs of about 20%. Peralta's rate is just a bit better. I like the idea of Santiago (K/AB of 16/114) or Laird (7/81) at #5. They're making some contact with the ball.We'll be real solid if JV, Fister, and Max can regularly go 6-8 innings and turn it over to Coke (7th), Benoit (8th), and/or Villareal (9th).

He gave them a reason not to in the week before AJAX returned going 3 for 22 but he has a knack for getting on, and getting over. Leyland will play the hot hand so I expect him in vs RHP this week and he's their best pinch hiting option when he's not starting. Play him as long as he's hot for sure, but he's earned a spot as at least the 4th OFer for the rest of the season IMO because he offers things the team lacks. Plays good D, bunts for hits, bunts to sacrifice, steals bases and takes a walk. If you want to play Raburn, play him at 2B. Personally I'd play Raburn at DH and sit Delmon's ### down for a few games.

We were so lucky the Padres didn't want to pay Verlander. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LUCKY.

He isn't trying to blow it by anyone tonight, guy is just dealing sick hooks and 95 on the black.

...and the guy the Padres took has been (or is) flirting with prison time. Lucky, indeed. Tigers playing about like they should be playing! Quality starting pitching, a couple innings of good relief, lots of contributing bats. Big win over Lynn. Too bad for Peavy and the Sux losing tonight. :cry: Let's see if Porcello can join the party.

He was scheduled to undergo a MRI sometime late tonight.“He warmed up then tried to throw another and couldn’t,” Leyland said, noting that Rojas said Valverde threw good in the bullpen before the injury. “So we’re shutting him down.”When asked if he was concerned about the apparent injury, Leyland said, “Sure. Yeah.”But Valverde, who most recently took the loss on Friday against Colorado, didn’t sound as concerned after talking to the team doctor.“The doctor said it’s not too bad,” he said, before admitting a little bit of nervousness “because I don’t know what’s going on.”Valverde said that he didn’t feel a “pop” in the wrist, that it was the first time he’s experienced a soreness like that, and that the pain subsided after throwing.His right wrist was taped up after the game, and neither he nor Leyland had a timetable of his return.The 34-year-old right-hander is 3-2 this season with a 4.18 ERA in 29 appearances. I would rather see Benoit as the closer now, and for the rest of the year but this isn't exactly good news. If Valverde is effective then this bullpen is pretty good with Villarreal, Coker, Dotel (who is back btw) and Benoit leading to Potato. We'll see, doesn't sound serious but he could have ripped a tendon and be out two months. Glad Octavio is back though.

Laird down again with the hammy, Avila back tomorrow but Laird has really done a nice job this year.
