***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Al Alburqurque is at Toledo and should be ready for a call-up anytime.

3 2/3 IP so far, 2 R, 3 H, 9K. Fastball 94-96 and he's throwing a sinker now with the breaking ball.

It will require the Tigers to make room for him on the 40 man roster (Ortega?) but the decision of who to send back will be tough. This Downs guy if you haven't noticed, is pretty good. The starters and the bullpen look pretty good IMO, Sanchez with a nice start tonight.

Dirkity Dirk Dirk in full effect tonight, really glad to have him back since this means seeing less of Delmon's Bubba Gump ###.

Fisterrrrrrrrrrrrr :pickle:  :pickle:

I saw the league's stats in the morning paper. Tigers are the AL's 4th in BA, pitchers are 8th in ERA. (They are also 3rd or 4th in OBP, so they are getting the walks.) With Fister back and Santiago hopefully adding some quality starts, that ERA could drop.

Chicago Trib talking about how the Sux will generally use a six-man rotation, now that they've added Liriano, so they can protect Sale and Quintana. I still think they have too many young guys to stay strong down the stretch.

They also have Alex Rios and Adam Dunn who are completely hit and miss. I think they are generally underrated and were underestimated coming into the season, but they go days without hitting much like the Tigers. The head to head and division games will be huge, would be nice to get two from the AL Central in.Man Cleveland is bad. My worry about them becoming a juggernaut going forward has faded, their pitching is completely awful. At least they are leading baseball in attendance, they can always hang their hat on that.

Mushnick got a month's worth of material out of that one: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/more_sports/for_the_love_of_mike_2M7bi2OFHD2rRuds8bkU5L

Raburn to DL retroactive to 8/1 and Worth recalled. Don't understand why they didn't just put Raburn on the DL two days ago when they had to DFA Kelly and they could have avoided doing so (for about 10 days anyway).

Man, Fister is looking great. A solid #2 for us now.

Is there any possibility at all that V-Mart returns this year?

Lineup for today. This is certainly one I haven't seen before. Leyland is obviously in a tinkering mood today.

Jackson 8, Infante 5, Cabrera dh, Fielder 3, Young 7, Peralta 6, Boesch 9, Laird 2, Worth 4.

Doesn't seem like VMart is coming back given he still can't run at this point. He might be ready by mid September to resume baseball activities but he hasn't faced live pitching in so long, it won't matter. I'd think he'd have to start rehabbing in the next two weeks for a return to even be somewhat possible.

Agree on the Raburn thing, we could have kept Kelly.

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers have been looking for a right-handed part-time player.

They finally got one Sunday.

The Tigers acquired utility man Jeff Baker from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for two minor league players, the team announced Sunday afternoon.

Baker was placed on waivers last week and claimed by Detroit. The Cubs and Tigers then worked out a deal.

The team is expected to announce a corresponding move on its 25-man roster following Sunday's game. The move is needed to clear a spot for Baker.

A spot was already available on the 40-man roster after the club designated Don Kelly for assignment Friday.

Baker, 31, was batting .269 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 54 games with the Cubs.
I hope this means no more Raburn. Just heard on the Fox Sports broadcast that Baker is hitting over .300 against LHP. Seems like a good cheap fit.

Lamont holds up Infante on Fielders base hit to center field..then Delmo promptly grounds into an inning ending DP.

Even Rod Allen says you rarely see a player help up trying to score from second on a hit to center..and that Brantley does not throw well.

Please be the end for Raburn. Since he's on the DL though they can't cut him right now. Can they send Worth back to Toledo already? I didn't think they could since they just called him up. Maybe Delmon goes?

Sanchez is a better pitcher than Fister.
Sanchez may have better stuff, but Fister is by far the better pitcher. I really don't care what the metrics show. When you look how Fister pitched last year and how he has pitched the last 5 or 6 outings, he is an elite #2 guy.

He sure didn't pitch like an elite #2 the first three+ months of the season. Part of it may have been the injury though, I really do hope you are right. Scherzer stunk today but he's had an great run the past two months.

ETA: Righties hitting .370 vs Coker this year. Why is he still in????

Early on Coke was our most consistent arm. Lately he has sucked and the rest of the bullpen is pitching great. Leyland is just stubborn when it comes to changing his opinion, but that is human nature.

He needs to be used only against lefties right now, a true LOOGY. Tigers are going to need to find a lefthanded bullpen arm, Below makes sense but he's barely ever used. Schlereth just started his rehab, maybe he can be that guy in September. What did Leyland get tossed for?

He and Laird both tossed for arguing a close play at 1st in the second inning. I didn't see the play, but it sounds like Laird may have slid in safe before the fielder got his foot on the bag.

Yep, Laird was safe due to a missed tag. Ump blew the call. Go figure. Never seen that happen this year yet. Laird argued, got tossed, then Leyland came out to argue and got tossed.Hafner kills the Tigers about as much as Thome does.

That's a really, really bad loss. Those at bats from Infante and Berry are as bad as you can get in that situation. One or both should have tried to bunt, disgusting.

I've come to the conclusion that I don't think anyone on the team can reliably bunt. Seriously, not a single player. Apparently they don't work on it in the minors, or in Spring Training.

Wow. They sure do make things interesting. Love the atmosphere at Comerica Park this time of year as well. Yankees up next which means everyone get ready for a bunch of trolling by Raider Nation in this thread.

It's only Red Sox "fans" I enjoy ragging on. I respect The D. You won't hear a peep out of me even if you lose all four games.Good luck.
 Just gettin' ya riled up a bit! Should be a fun series. We typically only play each other for a series at home each year so it's nice to get a second home series vs. the Yankees this year. May the best team win.

Nothing personal earlier, but bitching about umps gets old after awhile. They do the best they can and you only tend to notice when the calls go against you. When they make a bad call in your favor, that gets forgotten the next day.

And so are the bad ones. The exception of course is what happened on Tuesday with the rain delay, that was pretty scandalous. Pretty sure when people talk about bad calls it is mostly tongue and cheek. Tigers have probably took the brunt of bad umpiring this year but they have probably lost only two games because of it, they lose all their other games with ####ty play. I can remember them getting a break in a game on a call that ended up opening the flood gates, so it all evens out. But that rain game, no...we aren't forgetting about that one.
