Yeah doesn't sound extremely serious but they need to DH him for awhile. Nice 8th inning here so far, one more would be nice.

Very nice! Props to Boesch for the clutch hit in the 8th. What a shame that JV gets a 'no decision' for such a great performance ..low pitch count, plenty of K's. No matter. Let's just keep winning!Fingers crossed for Miggy.

After watching the vid that was a brilliant catch. Pumping at full speed then having to adjust his path to the ball at full speed..unreal!!

JV has averaged 238 innings over the past three years.
Max has averaged 187, Fister had 216 last year.
Porcello has averaged 171 over the past couple years.
Sanchez threw 195 last year.
The Sox? Sale pitched 71 innings last year.
Quintana threw 102; Peavy averaged 109 the past couple years.
If somebody's roster is going to tire down the stretch, I'd bet it will be the Sox.

So the Tigers give the Angels four outs in the 6th and those are the only two runs the Angels get off Porcello.
Why Leyland continues to start Delmon over Dirks vs RHPers is mind-boggling. Need some kind of awesome effort out of Smyly today, they have really looked like crap on this homestand even though they swept Toronto.

That win goes to Smyly for keeping his cool when the fielding was imploding around him. They certainly tried to lose that game but Smyly really showed me something tonight. I think he's definitely the 5th starter next year, all year. Starting pitching has been fantastic since the All-Star break outside of a few bad starts sprinkled in, if only they can start hitting consistently. If only...
Part of the reason I did not think the trade for Sanchez was all that necessary. I liked the guys we had, outside of not being completely healthy.

Actually, this is a reason the trade was good. Who would have started in place of Fister had this trade not been made? He might miss another start too.
Turner. May not have been ideal, but he was about 50-50 on giving us a good outing. Serviceable as a spot starter and much better long term potential. Infante though was well needed.

Who knows, it's maddening. Cabrera out because of the ankle (which I agree with) but not sure why he gave Avila today off. Lefthanded hitters have a .850 OPS against Ervin this year.

No he wasn't. He has a 7.55 ERA in seven career starts and allowed nine baseruners in five innings in one game this year, and eight baserunners in 2 IP in the other. Why do you keep bringing this up? This isn't an Obama thread, you don't have to keep saying the same thing over and over every three days.

Turner has 4 starts this year. In three of them he has given up 3 or fewer runs in 5 or more innings. He had a disastrous 7-run two inning outing, but he still be the white sox once. The Tigers would have been fine given Turner 4 or 5 starts in the second half of the season. I do really hope Sanchez proves me wrong.No he wasn't. We'll see how they respond to the pressures of September. For a team that has been better than the Tigers for most of the season, they are still only 2.5 games up. That has to worry you slightly, this Tigers team gives away games like the Kardashians give away dignity.

Lead was 2.5 on July 28th. 6 of one - Sox fans worried about only being 2 1/2 games uphalf a dozen of the other - Tigers fans worried that they have the 2nd best record in baseball, for the month of August, and have gained zero ground.

Not worried, they'll do it or they won't. They haven't played well enough to have the second best record over a three day stretch yet a month. All the elements are there, they could win the division by five games or more if they played like they were supposed to. But they won't, and they'll probably end up with the second wildcard.

The next three nights I will be at the Bowie/Erie series and I just look and saw who the Erie pitching coach is. Sweet.
Only three of the top 15 Tigers prospects are at Erie but obviously looking forward to seeing Nick Castellanos play. James McCann has made some strides this year, but the Erie pitching is a bit suspect.

Ray Burris was pitching coach in West Michigan for a year before moving on to Erie. I think it's his second year there.

Tribune says the Sox are starting to think about the innings for Sale and Quintana ...maybe limiting them to some degree. Also, Floyd now battling some recurring pain again. I suspect their pitching develops a few chinks down the stretch. Some of their young bats could feel the September heat as well. I say Tigers win the division by a couple.

Went to watch Erie tonight. Bowie (Orioles) had their top pitching prospect Dylan Bundy on the mound so it was a good chance to look at three of the Tigers top 10 prospects.
RF Nick Castellanos:
Played RF and looked decent out there. Made one play going to the gap where I thought he was going to get ate up and he handeled it nicely. Really obvious he's new out there though, I'll just say that.
At the plate he was categorically awful. I was sitting in first row in on-deck circle so I had a good view. He K'd all four times up, fouling away just three pitches in those at bats. He's very thin and Bundy's 98 mph fastball was too much for him. He's not ready to be called up and I already knew this but tonight proved it. He's 20 years old and even though it's just one game, he has work to do with his physique, in the outfield and at the plate. Hopefully tomorrow against a lesser starter I'll see him connect on something.

He has struggled at Erie and tonight was no different. He had a walk which I thought was a good at bat, but the other at bats weren't good at all and he looks like the .180 he's hitting. Behind the plate he was sharp. He short-hopped the SS with two throws on steal attempts, both should have been dug out and the tag applied. He threw out one and the two he didn't would have been out had the SS been able to handle them. This guy is a couple of years out, maybe a full year in Erie next year will be enough but he does look like a decent defensive catcher.
CF Avisail Garcia:
Erie is a pretty bad team, there isn't a lot to love. This guy is the exception, holy moly. In the first inning he took off into the RCF gap on a sinking flyball and a runner on second. He made the catch in very deep RCF, pivoted and fired the ball on one hop to 3B barely missing a fast runner.
First at bat he hit a line drive single. After getting to second he went on a 3-1 pitch (no one on first) and the hitter swung at ball four. Well he would have easily stolen third, very impressive for a kid this size. Second at bat a hard hit ball to CF, out. Third at bat he hit a ####### missile over the third baseman's head. It was no more than five feet over the 3BMans head, maybe less. fans around me wondered why the guy didn't jump. Well he didn't jump because the ball was hit so hard and got to him so fast, that it wouldn't have mattered. If he had hit that in the show maybe, maybe a great 3Bman would have had it but it would have had to have been perfect timing and a great leap. I mean he just smoked that ball.
Later in the 7th or 8th he ran down a ball in RCF that I think the Bowie fans thought was a sure hit. My buddy who goes to all the Bowie games and is intimately familiar with the Eastern League said he thought Garcia was one of the best CFers he's seen all year. Garcia is gonna play RF in the majors but at 6'4" 240 he can really move.
Not much else to report, Douglas is pretty decent at 2B but this team really lacks talent. Jordan Lennerton is having a really nice year but he's 26 now, he's probably not going to make much of an impact above Toledo.
Phil Coke sucks.
