Prince at 1B, Miggy at 3B, AJ in CF are obviously locks. V Mart at DH probably is too.I'm expecting us to pick up Jhonny's option due to lack of options - internal and extrenal. Him and Infante will be back as everyday players. Santiago is the swing player again. Barring trades we have to find a way to win with this infield.Dirks should be too, meaning as an everyday player, hopefully he'll be what we hoped Boesch would be.Speaking of Boesch, he'll be back, whether he starts or not depends on Garcia's spring. They'll compete, I think Garcia is given every shot to win the job.Rotation - Verlander/Max/Fister/Porcello/Free Agent (hopefully a veteran #4 type - preferably a K/fly ball pitcher)Bullpen - Benoit/Villareal/Al/Coke/Smyly/Below/Marte, not sure what contracts look like but I think we'll be good there. Probably lose one or two of those last few and add a couple of more.Use Valverde $ on a free agent starting arm, will need a veteran backup C again too, I'd be fine with Laird. Leaves room for one more utility guy if we keep both Boesch and Garcia, if Garcia is optioned to get him full time AB's instead of giving him the job and making Boesch 4th OF then there's 2 spots.More importantly than an arm I think we need to bring in someone that will light a fire under this team, whether that's management or player I don't care - need something.

With Valverdes and Delmons contracts gone that should free up at least 10-12 million..that is if they are going to keep the payroll the same.
 
Laird hits well for average; Avila has a good eye and gets on base a lot. Two good options there.

Dirks, AJax, Garcia, Berry, Boesch - that'll work.

I could see a pitching line-up of JV, Max, Fister, ...Sanchez? Smyly? Porcello? Pick two.

We really just need to resolve the middle of the infield.

Garcia is the second best outfielder on the team right now. Have no idea why Leyland doesn't think he is ready.

I would like to see middle infield addressed. The bull pen is looking better with the exception of papa blown saves.

I don't know how we can fix the middle infield, there isn't much in free agency nor the farm and we don't have much to offer in a trade. We've made our bed and now we must sleep in it.I'd rather Berry go back to AAA, start Garcia, and make Boesch the 4th OF to start - swap Berry and Boesch if Boesch doesn't get out of his season long funk. Use the extra bench spot on a guy that can play infield instead.Sanchez would be great, but he's going to get paid in free agency, can't bank on Illitch to pony up again. I think we'll be going tier 2, just hope it's not a Brad Penny type.
 
Sanchez won't be back and there isn't really any reason to get another starter with Smyly, Crosby and Oliver being ready or almost ready IMO. They need to get a Corner OF bat for sure, and it can't be a guy who stinks in the field.

Garcia will get a shot to make the team but I'd only hope they'd do that if he was guaranteed at least a platoon. Plus Castellanos is still in play although another full year in the minors and possibly finding a way to play him at 3B is the best option.

Middle infield is set, I don't see any movement there. By every measure Peralta is a good fielder though, people wanting a fielder first guy with range seem to forget Adam Everett. Peralta is the best SS the Tigers have had since those good Guillen years, he's fine for what he is.

I would guess a multi-year in the $11mm a year range.

Sanchez may get 9 figures.I think going into the season with Smyly, Crosby, and Oliver is a bad idea. They should compete for the 6th man, at some point next season all will be needed I'm sure. Castellanos should go back to the minors, if he makes the corrections with the stick and we still have a corner OF issue then look at making that change. Long term, he goes to 3B, Miggy back to 1st, and Prince to DH once V Mart is gone.I won't be upset if we choose a good corner OF over a good SP, but I think SP should be the 1st priroity. In a perfect world we get both, trade Peralta, and bring in a black hole of offense at SS. Yes, I think that'd be optimal to Jhonny + only one of those holes being filler. Jhonny just isn't a strong enough of a difference maker with the bat to function on this defense. He makes a lot more sense on a team with an already strong infield defense and weak lineup.

That is a ton of cash for a DH.
 
So one unearned run on a botched DP and one run because Garcia airmailed the cutoff guys allowing Cespedes to score.

People who don't follow this team don't understand it's not the range or the errors, it's the execution of fairly simple plays.

ETA: Should be five unearned runs, now the sloppy play is impacting even Austin Jackson. Just terrible.

It'll this team played sound defense they would be ten games up. Just so frustrating. Every game you can find plays that most other teams would make.

Today was the worst because it was our best defender, a future great defender and a guy we traded for in part because of his defense. With Dirks, AJAX and Garcia you have a very above average OF defensively, but the execution hasn't been there all year. the way they have trouble hitting sometimes I don't think they'd be ten games up, but I think they'd be 3-5 up for sure. #1 offseason priority, Mike Scioscia or someone who can execute a gameplan.
 
The good news is the Sox lose again in a walk-off. Can we get back another game (or two?) over the weekend with the Sox in L.A.? Every win we get this weekend pressures them to win later out west. I still believe the young Sox players will feel the heat ...if the Tigers can apply it.

 
If the Tigers can't start sweeping some of these series against lower tier teams, they don't deserve to be in the playoffs. The Sox are catchable. I am not sure how hungry this team is though

 
New format should be top 5 teams get in. 4 and 5 play best of three on three consecutive days and then proceed from there. Screw the division nonsense.

There would be a good chance no one from the AL Central gets in this year. Why have divisions at all?

The door is open for the Tigers and we will see what they are made of. Have to take at least 2-3 from the Twins.

Ron Gardenhire was on local radio yesterday and said without a doubt Cabrera is his choice as the ALs MVP and it is not close.

There is a bias towards veterans vs. rookies. All things being equal, they will give it to the veteran. If Trout had a history of putting together monster seasons, he would have a chance. Playoff race could sway a few voters too. I think the only way Trout gets it is if they make the playoffs and Detroit doesn't.

Trout is a lead off guy, so fewer opportunities. Plus he started the season late. Cabrera does drive a run in with runners in scoring position 50.6 percent of the time vs. 48.1 percent for Trout. So Cabrera is a bit better there. It is hard to compare how the speed advantage weights in over Cabrera being a bit better at the plate. WAR suggests Trout is better, but IMO Cabrera has earned the MVP this season.

Now lets see Trout earn an MVP against the Sox and sweep em!

 
Max gets the start in the early game, I think they have to win five of these last six games at home to have any chance. I think splitting those last six on the road is definitely within reason, but this team is completely unreasonable. Plus the White Sox don't lose to the likes of the Indians.

Going 8-4 should be good enough. Hopefully Weaver/Trout can complete the sweep of the Sox today. Glad Max is going first today. If we get that win, then a win from Porcello would be gravy. Tampa should take two of four from the Sox, then all Cleveland needs to do is take two of six. Saying that, every time this year the Tigers got your hopes up this year, they quickly turned around and disappointed. They really don't deserve to be in the playoffs the way they played this year, but at least there is reasonable hope they can still slide into the post season. They should have been able to cruise through this season. Still a good chance Detroit could end up with a one-game playoff with the Sox.

Porcello isn't pitching the 2nd game; Smyly is.
 
ESPN or someone was showing Porcello for both games. Smyly makes sense. Hopefully he can pitch like he did at the start of the season.

 
Keep it going, Tigers! The Sox' arms are fading, and they're living off the HRs. I'd love to end today tied or in the lead. Miggy - :thumbup:

 
Dirks drops a ball, miss plays another and Infante can't convert a ground ball out. All ruled hits, all should have been errors. Terrible. Then Phil Coke comes in because Max had to be removed because of all the mistakes, and melts down.

I had had enough of Phil Coke and his shoulder shrugs. Infante is blowing me away with all of his blunders..I thought he was a solid defensive player. Plus I am not liking his ABs. Looks like a slightly better Ryan Raburn type of hitter.Well if there is a must win game it is tonight.
 
I can't believe a pennant race is not fun. What kind of #### do we talk as fans? Yeah, we beat the Indians six times this year and sometimes we have a perfect fielding game!!????

I blame Chicago, they could have put us all out of our misery two weeks ago. :mellow:

I think the good news is that #3 leads to #2. I'd love to see #1.Da Guru, with the Sox losing their final game in L.A., I wouldn't say tonight is a must win ...having made up another game this weekend is very good. Tonight would certainly be a sweet win, putting us back in a tie for first.

Agreed but how can you score one run in 10 innings off a team with this kind of pitching staff? Throw in the fact that Minnesota's only run was unearned, the result of two errors the second being a double play ball.What are our emotions supposed to be right now? Mad? Disappointed? Confused? All of the above?How can you get mad about a team with this kind of pitching, the best hitter the game is scene in some time and a very capable bullpen? They just got swept in a doubleheader that they needed to sweep, I don't think there is any reason to even look back now. All those losses to Cleveland, getting swept in KC, letting Chicago have the game Monday was mostly forgotten with two wins today. I've paid my dues as a fan, so have all of you having to live through that :tfp: Randy Smith put together when we were the laughingstock of the league. I had little issue with 2007, 2008 sucked but I got over it, 2009 was pretty horrible at the end there and 2010 was a reboot. Last year was great, loved the year because they snuck up on people to some degree. But when you're the favorite you can't play the game this way. Outsiders blame Cabrera for his play at 3B which we all know isn't the problem, maybe just a small hiccup with his range (especially for the likes of Porcello). The problem is they have no attention to detail, they look unprepared and indifferent sometimes which I don't get. They love Leyland, they usually play hard for him but it doesn't seem as though he's getting through when he needs to. I don't know what else to say, that was just brutal today.
