***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Also, I think Guthrie would be a good addition if Sanchez is out. He can eat innings. A solid #4/5 type.
Paying $ for a guy that at his best is a back end guy just doesn't make any sense, hope your prospects develop into a Lance Lynn/Samardzija/Doubront type, throw cheap darts at veterans like Capuano, Maholm, or Millwood and hope for the best, or if you're going to pay $ pay it for an Edwin Jackson type for a one year fix. Not a guy like Guthrie, a guy that will cost some $ and won't help win any games.
Why would Guthrie cost more than any of the names you mentioned?
Thin free agent market, I think several starting arms are going to get nice contracts...for them, not for the team that signs them. If we aren't going to get a good starting arm the dart board at cheap reclamation projects route is the correct one. Spend money elsewhere.

Torii to Tigers on a 2 year deal.
2/25? Pending physical, Rosenthal reporting. COF, CHECK
Is 2/$25 a guess? I was hoping for about $5 million less.I hope Torii has plenty left in the tank.ETA: Yikes, just read 2 years $26. Maybe they felt the need to give him the cash since so many other teams were looking at him?
He was looking for Beltran money, off the top of my head I think this is the same contract Beltran signed last year.

2/25 was a guess based on the market factors and what I thought he was seeking. Too much $$$ IMO but it's not my money, so I don't care. Need filled, hopefully he doesn't hit a wall until 2014 or later.

That's the market rate. Hunter is a decent enough player. If he hits as well as he did this year, he'll live up to the contract. If regression or age kick in, he won't. Either way, it's a two year deal for a high payroll team.

It's only a bad move if it puts the Tigers into a position where they can't (or won't) afford to fill their other holes.

Batting in front of Miggy & Prince he should see some decent pitches.
In front of? I assumed he was coming in as the #5 hitter.
Last thing I read:AjaxHunterMiggyPrinceVMart"Add in Hunter's proven value batting second in a batting order -- he goes from hitting between the Angels' Mike Trout and Albert Pujols to slotting between Austin Jackson and Miguel Cabrera -- along with his smart baserunning and still-standout defense, and there's plenty to like for the Tigers in the deal."

Delmon, Valverde and Inge being gone knock around 20 million off the payroll. It seems the Tigers did overpay a bit but it is only a two year deal. The upgrade at #2 over Berry is huge.

Some names to throw around:

RP Ryan Madson

RP Joakim Soria

RP Jeremy Affeldt

RP Juan Cruz

P Brandon McCarthy

P Ryan Dempster

P Dan Haren-probably unreasonable but I put him in here anyway

P Chris Young

P Erik Bedard

OF Scott Hairston (depth)

2B/3B Jeff Keppinger

C Kelly Shoppach

P Anibal

Add names as you see fit. I like those top four relief pitchers and there are a ton of guys in that range. I think adding a veteran bullpen arm is the one thing they must have, a starter would depend on contract years and risk. You sign guys like Bedard for nothing expecting little but the return could be high, more money would have to be thrown at Dempster but not many years and then you have your long-term guys like Haren and Sanchez who are probably out of the price range. I like Brandon McCarthy a lot from that list though, I think he'd make sense.

Historically his stats are those of a 5 hitter, but last year he hit .313 at the expense of some power. He walked a little less too, but his OBP still went up just because his average was so high.If he hits like that again he'll make a nice No. 2.And in terms of intangibles, it's hard to imagine a bigger upgrade than going from Delmon Young to Torii Hunter.

You take the risk because you know the guy is a nice upgrade for you in the field, and because he's a good personality to have around in the clubhouse. No way he repeats last year though at the plate, but the Tigers can use Dirks/Infante in the #2 hole and bump Hunter down to 6th if they need to. Plus you have Garcia if Dirks fails, Garcia when Hunter invariably misses 30 games, and Boesch and Berry for depth. Hunter's career numbers are .277/.335/.466 I think if he can produce that for two years you get your money's worth (maybe a higher OBP and lower slugging but still in the 800 OPS range).

I would bank on a higher OBP for sure, BA too. As long as he's healthy he could be in for a big year. None of the pressures of the past being "The Man" on the team. Batting in front of the most ridiculous 3-4-5 hitters in the AL. All those line drives he can hit to the gaps. I can see Jackson getting on and Hunter looking at a pitch directly down the middle, hitting line shots to the right center wall....stand up double? Triple? 1-0, nobody out, man on 3rd, Miggy/Prince/Martinez coming at you!If Mr. Ilitch goes flat out crazy now and signs Sanchez I will promise to purchase at least 1 hot-n-ready per week for the next calendar year. It's bad pizza but I just don't care!

Nice signing by Detroit. Thought Hunter might come home to Texas, but I guess the money was too good, and I don't blame him.

Makes Detroit the team to beat in the AL. Should probably go ahead and print the AL Champ shirts and get an early order on WS tickets. Congrats!!

I would say you're wrong and it's clearly Texas, but I think we all know Toronto is the team to beat. :) Detroit will have even more pressure on them next year in the regular season, sure would be nice if they lived up to those expectations and we get home-field advantage for a playoff series. That would be a new one.

From CBSSportsline:

When the Tigers finished talking with Torii Hunter, Mike Ilitch had a question.

"Where do we stand with [Anibal] Sanchez?" the Tigers owner asked his baseball decision-makers.

In other words, they still want him.

The Tigers committed $26 million of Ilitch's money to sign Hunter. They still have more available to spend, although they can't be sure it will be enough to keep Sanchez.

As CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reported last week, Sanchez has let some teams know he's looking for $90 million over six years, and told at least one team he wants $100 million over seven years.

It's unlikely the Tigers would go that high. Then again, with Ilitch as owner, the Tigers have learned to never say never.

Already, barely two weeks into a postseason that began with their Game 4 loss to the Giants, the Tigers have addressed their top priority. Hunter will take over in right field, and also in the second spot in the lineup.

If they spent no more money and made no more additions, the Tigers could open up with an outstanding lineup (Austin Jackson, Hunter, Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Victor Martinez, Andy Dirks, Jhonny Peralta, Alex Avila, Omar Infante) and a solid rotation (Justin Verlander, Doug Fister, Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello, Drew Smyly).

The next step is to try to sign Sanchez. If they don't get him, multiple Tigers officials say, they won't go after any big-name, big-money free-agent pitcher. Instead, the plan is to stick with Porcello and Smyly, while adding to their rotation depth behind that.

The Tigers may add to the bullpen, but in meetings this week they confirmed an earlier decision not to pursue a free-agent closer. Hard-throwing Bruce Rondon will be given first shot at the job.

The only other move the Tigers could make would be to trade Peralta and look for an upgrade at shortstop. However, general manager Dave Dombrowski insisted last week that shortstop is "not a priority."

The first priority was signing Hunter, and they got that done.

The next priority is signing Sanchez.

Hunter was up in Ks (133) and down in walks (38) last year. Hopefully he can close that gap. But it's a solid move to start the off-season.

When you have a .389 BABIP, there's no point in waiting around for walks. Especially if you're 37; something might be gaining on you

On The Ticket today they said Hunter flew to Detroit on his own to meet with DD and Mr. I. Told them he wanted to play two more years and he wanted to finish his career in Detroit. Said "Lets get a deal done"

Ilitch is acting like a man who knows he can't take it with him, and he is not planning too. I think he breaks the bank and gets Sanchez for 6 years $80.

His kid is going to Notre Dame, that was probably the tiebreaker between Detroit and Texas (he lives in Texas).

Gee, do you think he's going to regress? I never would have guessed that based on your past posts about Hunter.

You should buy a Hunter jersey with the number 389 on the back.

For all the millions that top athletes can make, I'm surprised more don't decide based on family issues like this. Well, only a little surprised.

Maybe he likes the team's chances better. I would have little doubt that Texas would have paid him the same money. Torii wanted to be in Detroit.
He should like this team's chances. Anything less than a World Series will be a huge disappointment.
You mean like the Rangers this past season? That big of a disappointment? He told other clubs that he'd be willing to talk with them if it didn't work out with Detroit.

No, not that big. Nothing was as big of a disappointment as that. Still :banned: often and heavily.

There-there

Fox Sports, following initial reporting by mlb.com, reported Thursday that Laird agreed to a two-year deal with the Atlanta Braves.

Laird tweeted: "Thanks for the ride Detroit! Will miss you all, excited to start a new journey in Atlanta."

Laird, who hit .282 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 63 games, might not play more than he did with the Tigers because he'll be backing up Brian McCann, a six-time All-Star. But the multiyear deal perhaps is something he couldn't have received with the Tigers. Laird would replace David Ross, who left as a free agent to sign with the Red Sox.

In his news conference as the off-season began, Dombrowski said he felt comfortable with Bryan Holaday replacing Laird as the No. 2 catcher. Holaday, who turns 25 on Monday, made his debut in June, and in six games with the Tigers went 3-for-12. Like Laird, Holaday is a right-handed hitter who could start against left-handers instead of left-handed-hitting Alex Avila.

Holaday is spending his off-season at the spring-training base in Lakeland, Fla., to maximize his preparation.
