hunter by a landslide
I think having Hunter will give this team the sense of urgency it seemed to be lacking. Having VMart full time will not only be a huge help in the lineup too, but also be huge in the locker run. The Tigers have the talent, but were a bit too laid back. I see an improvement in talent and leadership.

Hunter will wear #48 this year which he bought from Rick Porcello. Porcello gave the proceeds to Hurricane Sandy victims, all class.

I really like how this clubhouse has chemistry now. Prince really did a lot for it last year and I think Torii just makes it that much stronger. I like this team.'DocGonzo said:

The Justin Upton rumors were effectively squashed when the Detroit Tigers signed outfielder Torii Hunter last week to a 2-year, $26-million deal.
But at least one ESPN expert thinks the Tigers, if they were so inclined, could still make a deal happen for the Arizona Diamondbacks' star outfielder.
Jim Bowden of ESPN.com wrote five reasonable Justin Upton today, citing the Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Indians, Atlanta Braves and the Tigers.
The main targets: Prized third-base prospect Nick Castellanos and rightfielder Avisail Garcia.
"This is probably the best fit for (Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers), " Bowden wrote. "Castellanos has the potential to be an impact bat who should develop into an average defender at third base, but he is blocked in the big leagues by the AL MVP, which is why the Tigers have tried him in the outfield, where he has less value. Garcia is a good athlete with bat control who should be an asset as a big league regular down the line.
"The move would make the Diamondbacks younger and a high-ceiling player like Castellanos would fit their long-term plans. The Tigers, on the other hand, would have three above-average defenders in Torii Hunter, Austin Jackson and Upton and would have arguably the best lineup one through six in the American League with Jackson, Hunter, Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Upton and Victor Martinez."
That would be one heck of a 1-through-6 for the Tigers. But if this trade were to actually happen (don't count on it; even Bowden says "if I was in Towers' shoes I wouldn’t trade Justin Upton"), that would put left-handed outfielder Andy Dirks out of a starting spot after a solid 2012 season.
Upton is a former No. 1 overall pick who had a trying season, hitting .280 with 17 home runs and 67 RBIs. He was second in the National League in runs (107) but largely underperformed after a breakout 2011 (31 homers, 5.7 WAR).

Dombrowski could have said Raburn's BABIP this year was only .224 and he's a prime dead cat bounce candidate in AAA next year.

Peralta may be a better ballplayer. He is just too nonchalant during the season. Post season he really stepped up and played up to his potential.

3/30 is about right for Drew. I like Jhonny Peralta as an individual player more than I like Drew, but a baseball team is a sum of its parts. I think the Tigers are a better team with Drew at SS.

Not sure on this guy. If he can field anything like Ray Oyler I guess that makes up for lack of offense. I did read he walks a lot, might be ok @ #9 spot?

He'll turn 30 before opening day and has over 3000 MLB PAs. He's been around enough to establish himself as a 3-4 WAR contributor. He's a better hitter than Peralta and probably a better glove. The big question mark is how much injuries have taken away from Drew. Will his speed ever come back? Is his increasing strike out rates over the past two years due to rust or something else?The Oaklands, who have a positional need, passed on his option at an effective cost of $8.65M. That's a yellow flag to me.

It appears the Tigers are truly intent on letting 21-year-old hurler Bruce Rondon compete for the ninth-inning job this spring. On Tuesday, the Tigers added Rondon to their 40-man roster, thereby protecting him from next month's Rule 5 Draft. During the Tigers' annual state of the team address, Dombrowski called Rondon a "rare talent" that has the makeup of a closer, despite having never pitched in the majors. I wonder if Dombrowski is just playing a game of who blinks first with Boros, either that or he has a leap of faith in the abilities of Rondon. Seems like when you so close, you should just spend the bucks on Soriano.

Maybe they still want to make a run at Sanchez or Upton. Also closer is an overrated position. Valverde has always had modest stuff and was still able to post a perfect season of saves and Phil Coke was perfect in the post season. A Phil Coke that this board wanted banished by the 3/4 point of last season.

Let Benoit bridge to Rondon, Al Al or Villarreal. The last two need closer time and I would suggest one of them start in Toledo to get some game experience to see if they can handle it.

Have heard and read several comps between him and Zumaya...only Rondon doesn't have the violent delivery that ruined Zoom's arm. I don't think it's posturing, I also don't think it's reasonable to expect him to jump right into high leverage situations though.Start Benoit there, have Villareal on standby, and take a wait-and-see with Al and Rondon. Start them off in low leverage spots, mix in some tight ones to see how they react, and if the top 2 aren't getting it done re-evaluate and consider both of them. I don't think spending on a closer is a good idea until the trade deadline, spend elsewhere and if the 9th inning is an issue come July look to patch the hole then.

Report: Tigers' Brennan Boesch could be traded next week

Detroit Tigers rightfielder Brennan Boesch first lost his hold on a starting job with inconsistent hitting. And he pretty much lost any chance of getting it back when the team signed free agent Torii Hunter.
So now his time in Detroit might be over.
Jon Paul Morosi of foxsports.com reported this morning that Boesch "has garnered trade interest from multiple teams. One source believes Boesch could be dealt during winter meetings."
Those winter meetings are next week, Monday-Thursday.
Boesch, 27, hit .240 with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs in 132 games this season. He walked a career-low 26 times and struck out a career-high 104 times. For his three-year career, he has hit .259 with 42 homers.
Mired in a slump, he was left off of the team's postseason roster.
"I'm just hoping that this was just one of those blur years, " manager Jim Leyland said of Boesch earlier this month. "I don't really have an answer for you. I don't really know what happened. I know that he got upset when I said in the paper he needs to relax. He didn't like that too much."

Hopefully. I'd take an extra arm in the bullpen for him. Plus he seems to have an attitude problem for no good reason. Get him out of here. For as much as you guys hated Delmon Young last year, I hated Boesch.
