***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Between injuries and questions around Peralta, it was a neccesary move. This should mean the end of Santiago. Infield defense has been a sore spot, although I think Peralta has stepped up from last year where his effort was lacking until the playoffs. Garcia will be a very good player.

Love the trade. Iglesias' hot streak with the bat was a mirage, but unlike Jay Hon he carries a masterful glove, which is what this team needs. Lots of controllable years on the contract. This will spell the end of Jay Hon in Detroit.

Couldn't be happier. :pickle:

Good to see them get younger and better defensively without giving up too much.
isnt Garcia Detroits # 2 prospect?
He is but that says more about the Tigers farm system than anything else. He's a solid prospect - but he has some real approach issues at the plate. Maybe he can be one of those good bad ball hitters - but he'll have to prove that.

On a related note - the Tigers have continually had one of the worst rated minor leagues in baseball. Yet every year they use those guys to trade for ML players. I think DD has done a great job of using the farm system as a tool to help the major league club. And really - none of the guys they've traded the last few years have amounted to much. Even going back to the Cabrera trade.

So the Tigers now have the best run differential in baseball. They are also underperforming their expected W/L by the most in baseball. Hence - only a 2.5 game lead.

Lets hope they win some more of these games from here on out.

Having slept on the trade I've come to the conclusion that I'm indifferent to it. We gave up a guy I think will be an above average MLB OFer and a very good hitter, but got a guy Dombrowski says is the 3rd best SS in the field he's ever seen behind Vizquel and Ozzie. Those guys didn't hit much either but had a tremendous impact to their teams, so we can hope to offset Garcia's bat with tremendous fielding at the most important defensive position.

I like five straight wins to start a homestand. Avila was hitting .080 vs lefties before he hit that homer off Gio, now hitting .083. lol

Verlander still can't locate. I think people are overreacting about velocity and not considering his control enough. He has now walked almost the same amount of batters he did all of last year, in 100 less innings. Still....some good signs today.

I wonder if the crummy location is a product of the lacking velocity though. In the past, he could rear back and blown a 98 mph fastball by someone. Now at 93-94 he can't just blow it by someone so he needs to be fine. And that is causing him to nibble on the edges.

To be honest I haven't watched him live a great deal but the times I have he seems to be barely missing the zone with the non-strikes, and when he does put it in the zone it gets hammered.

Today he threw two 97mph fastballs in the first inning. His velocity is down on average but that is really a side-effect of his control. It's not just his fastball, he has one of the best curve balls in the game and is having trouble getting that backdoor pitch anywhere near the strike zone. He is trying to locate the fastball more and more because he simply hasn't been able to nibble the corners like he has in the past. Today was a great example, he walked 5 and I think he threw fastballs over 95 in four of those at bats with three balls.

He also is using the change-up a lot more, and that's because he can't locate his fastball. His was throwing sliders at 88 and 89 today, and his percentage of sliders has gone up significantly. If you go back to 2008 you'll see his fastball velocity was also down, it was 93.6 that year compared to 95+ in most of his seasons. Why? Because he had no control, he has to slow it down some to get it over.

He's also been really unlucky, his BABIP is high and he's not getting the black on the strike zone like he has in past years. So that lends itself to confidence, and he's been #####ing a lot about the umps which I think is a really bad sign as far as confidence. To me it doesn't seem like an injury adn he's showed his past few outings that he can dial up a 98mph fastball and throw a nasty curve at times, he just isn't doing it consistently. We keep hearing about him catching all these mechanical things, which I think is probably true. So basically he's lost some confidence, has had some bad luck and he's got mechanical issues.

In the end I think he will return to elite status at some point, but I'm losing faith that that will be anytime soon. The talent, arm, and old Justin are still in there but he's extremely inconsistent. It's like watching 25-year-old Verlander all over again, so it's frustrating for pretty much everyone at this point.

I really though Cleveland was going to fad, but even with this nice streak of 9-1 by the Tigers, the Indians are hanging tough.

I just traded him away in my roto league for Beltran so I expect him to return to dominance any time now

In reality though there is something wrong...hopefully it's just a bad year and long term he gets right

I'm feeling very good about the team. 16 over .500, so with continued success, they're positioned well for the balance of the year. JV is up and down, but the starting rotation is money. They've added another solid reliever to the mix. They've improved their defense with a great glove at SS (not sure if the defensive gains will offset offensive loss if Peralta is out, but they can afford a bit less offensive production). From the little I've seen, I like Perez as well (ahtleticism and speed in particular). VMart has exploded. The Tigers are now doing what was expected, while Cleveland is probably playing above their pay grade.

You a Red Sux or Yankees or Twins fan this week? Red Sux right? Because they are in first and all...

Haven't seen too many Sox games this year. Been to a few Twins games. More of a Pirate fan this year I think.
Pirates are an easy team to like

My company is HQed in the Burgh. I get phone calls every once in a while with We Are Family playing and on one else talking...

Peace

I thought MLB was going to resolve all the PED issues by now. They keep dragging it out and makes it impossible for teams. Either clear Peralta, or suspend him.

The hammer falls on Peralta on Monday, he's done like a turkey at 12 noon on thanksgiving

Seven in a row and 10 of 11. Good thing they picked this stretch to win a bunch of games because Cleveland and KC are the two hottest teams in all of baseball.

Iglesias with an RBI single tonight, Fister awesome again and they squeezed it out against a tough lefty. They need to keep their foot on the gas though, schedule gets tougher the next few weeks.

Two tough road series up next - Indians and the Yankees. End of the month has a 10-game stretch with the A's and Indians at home then the Red Sox on the road. We hold our own in those series and make hay with mostly inter-divisional games surrounding them and we'll be in great shape.

Looking at AL stats, it's amazing to see at least four of our starters in the top two dozen of every category. We could end up with 5 15-game winners, especially if Sanchez gets a little better luck and Porcello keeps up his recent consistency.

A. Jackson, CF
T. Hunter, RF
M. Tuiasosopo, LF
P. Fielder, 1B
V. Martinez, DH
J. Peralta, SS
J. Iglesias, 3B
A. Avila, C
R. Santiago, 2B
M. Scherzer, SP

same lineup today except for the battery. Can't blame them for taking it slow with Cabrera & Infante, even moreso with Jhonny still being here.

Only the second walkoff all year, and first extra inning home win this year. I like this Miggy fellow.

Big week this week with the road trip to Cleveland and New York. I'd say four wins would be awesome but as long as they split in Cleveland, I can live with three.

This post will not please the mouth-breathing, knuckle-scraping, Sports Radio-calling, Dombrowski haters (like Comer). But it is the truth. Dave Dombrowski is the best GM in baseball, and he just proved it again. For the third year in a row (and in a lousy market for contenders needing to shore up a position or two), DD went out and made a move that no one saw coming to address his team’s needs.
