Oil Heat - Any Positives? (1 Viewer)

Considering a house with oil heat.  But it is more expensive, requires more maintenance, and is riskier if it breaks down.

Any upsides at all?

Your house can't explode from an oil explosion?

Or can it? I've heard of gas explosions but not oil.

That's all I got
This does seem to be a positive from what I've seen online, but if the tank leaks, it sounds like cleanup sucks, plus apparently the heater exchange can break and blow soot all over the house.

Just have the boiler cleaned every year and that helps to prevent the misfiring. Also make sure the oil tank and the line are inspected and certified. You do not want it to leak because not only does the clean up suck it costs a ton and if the oil it gets through the foundation into the soil you are in a world of ####. Is gas available? If so I'd seriously think of converting.

I have only seen oil heat where gas is not available.  As previously stated, if the house does have gas service, you should definitely entertain the conversion, it shouldn't be too expensive.  Your local gas company may even be offering incentives.  Otherwise, oil is fine as long as you do your annual maintenance and take measures to prevent actually running the tank dry.
