Oldest SB matchup ever (1 Viewer)

The Steelers have been around since 1933 and the Cardinals have been around since 1920. That gives the two teams a combined 165 seasons of NFL play (ignoring that they actually teamed up in 1944 :goodposting: ). That's the oldest matchup in SB history no matter how you slice it.

Take a look at the '85 Super Bowl. Going across, the table reads that in 1985, the two teams had 92 combined NFL years, that as of today those teams have 138 combined years, that the winner was Chicago and they were founded in 1920 and the loser was NE and they were founded in 1960.

1960 was the watershed year in professional football, as nine current teams were founded that year (the eight AFL teams and the Cowboys). This is only the third Super Bowl that doesn't feature a team that was founded in 1960 or later.

Nice Chase.

Playing with this for just a minute... the 'older' team won 20 of the first 26 SBs, but only seven of the last sixteen. Ignoring for a minute that there's no particular reason 1992 should be a cutoff point it still seems interesting...

Thats why I hate when teams move cities. The Cardinals have a very interesting history but you wouldnt know it from there seasons in St Louis and Arizona. Their fan bases are fragmented across the country with few common denominators between generation and demographic.

the Cards were actually established in 1898 - wiki

The Cardinals are the oldest professional American football club in the United States.[2][3][4] This should not be confused with the longest original city team (the Green Bay Packers) because the team known now as the Arizona Cardinals was originally formed in 1898 as the Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago. The club was then called the Racine Normals since they were originally located in Normal Park on Chicago's Racine Avenue (not Racine, Wisconsin, as mistaken in the notes from an early APFA meeting). They then changed their name to the Racine Cardinals after they started wearing dark reddish uniforms, inherited from the collegiate Chicago Maroons.

After becoming a charter member of the NFL in 1920, the club was renamed the Chicago Cardinals, in part to distinguish them from a new franchise that was actually placed in Racine, Wisconsin. In 1944, during the lean years of World War II, the Cardinals temporarily merged into the Pittsburgh Steelers and became one franchise, usually referred to as Card-Pitt, for that one season.

The first SB meeting of two teams that were once merged :bag:Would've been the same if Philadelphia had won yesterday. Go Steagles!

Looking over the list, it seems that most of the older teams are in the NFC.
For sure. And the only really old AFC club is Pittsburgh, which was forced to move there as part of the merger.
I don't think the Steelers (or Colts or Browns) were forced to move to the new AFC. The clubs that agreed to switch received about $3 million (big money back then) in compensation.
It looks like your right. I remembered they put five configurations into envelopes and had Rozelle's secretary pick one out of a hat. But it looks like they did that after the three teams decided to move, and that was just to configure the NFC. Thanks.
