Always two.  Also use the oxford comma.

My admin group routinely edits my stuff for these things, but I will never change!
I'd bet the Venn diagram of people who use two spaces and people who use the oxford comma is close to a perfect circle.

One is correct.

Two is acceptable only if you're on an IBM Selectric
The two spaces was originally used when the typeface characters were fixed-pitch. The purpose of the second space was to prevent columns of characters. Since we have gone to variable spaced fonts, the second space is unnecessary and in some cases leads to larger than necessary spaces when justification is introduced.

Punctuation after sensentences What kind of freaking no IQ idiot needs punctuation after sentences It's perfectly easy to follow someone's train of thought without the use of punctuation And don't get me started on grammar Surely a bunch of stoned hippies thought that one up Stupid question

You forgot "take that to the bank bromigo" at the end

Two is considered outdated and one is now preferred according to many sources for correct grammar/punctuation, but for this board's general demographic two spaces is the way it was "back in my day". It's probably not yet incorrect to use two spaces, but my prediction is that before long it will be.

Starting today, just one space.  Didn't realize two is incorrect.

ETA:  Doh!

As a few people have mentioned, it used to be two but is now one.  As an old school person, it is a habit I have myself and have to edit in writing that matters.

It used to be it was necessary for readability but now isn't and in professional settings (more job screening than actual authoring), the tell-tale sign of two spaces is a dead giveaway to the screener that you are likely dealing with an older person of 40+ years and it is sometimes used to guess ages of candidates and draw assumptions.

So, tip of the day if you're a bit older and submitting resumes right now: type it out as you are comfortable doing, then for a find and replace and search out.()() and replace with.().     -with () being a space.

That's me.

Having said that, the two space vs. one space thing is really just a matter of aesthetics.  The oxford comma, on the other hand, is objectively superior to the other convention.

People who use two spaces are more likely to suffer from intimacy issues in their relationships.

ETA: I am 40+, but unlike some of my classmates, I never took a typing class. Glad to see I didn't waste my time in that class learning dumb things.

Look at me! I only use my index fingers to type!!!

Maurile had a thread on this back in 2012, but sadly it has been purged. One thing I remember from that thread is that Maurile said the FBG board software automatically changed all double-spaces to single-spaces.

This is the correct answer. Everyone else is wrong.

I remember that, but I just remember MT saying the correct answer was one space, so I was happy to be on the right side.

I disagree. I'm a firm believer in both the Oxford comma and one space. One space isn't just aesthetics. It's correct.

When HTML is rendered multiple spaces are sometimes displayed as a single space or more often  much smaller proportional spaces(based on the current font metrics). This is done by the browser. Some board & web server software did and does compress data (gzip/deflate etc to save bandwidth/speed things up) before transmitting.

"I invited over my mother, a porn star and a stripper."

Or perhaps it was "my mother, a porn star, and a stripper."

I know which world I want to live in.

You are aware that I am old, right? And presumably my mother is somewhat older?
The older the berry the sweeter the juice.

Man that's the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice.

Yeah well she blacker than a ########## too.

Great movie.  Life lessons abound.
