Open House/Housewarming Gift (1 Viewer)

Is it customary to bring a housewarming gift to an open house?  Here's why I ask:

Wife and I recently moved and want to have an open house for our friends relatives, co-workers, etc.  We do not, however, want any gifts. We just want people to eat, drink, socialize and have a good time.  When we send out the announcement for the open house, should we tell people that we do not want housewarming gifts?  Or does that come across as tacky, as though we would expect gifts in the first place?  Or is it best to just leave it unsaid and accept any gifts that people may bring?

If it is not customary to bring a gift, however, then it's a moot point.

It's not presumptuous, it's helpful. Just make it a casual message, and don't call it a housewarming or an open house. Doing so makes it sound much more formal. "We just moved in and want to have everyone over for the afternoon. Just bring yourselves...seriously, that's it."

The winners will still bring beer/whiskey.

This seems to pretty much encapsulate what everyone has said.  I'll keep the invite casual and ask for food/booze to feed the masses.

"Housewarming" party implies a small gift, perhaps.  "Open house" has no such implication though the well-mannered will bring a small host/hostess acknowledgment, a bottle of wine or perhaps a chocolate bobka.

Just so we are clear, this is a LOOK AT ME post about a LOOK AT ME party you are throwing yourself?

Is open house as a sort of housewarming a regional thing? I think I've only heard it in the realtor, house-for-sale sense.

never heard it called an open house, it's a housewarming that customarily requires attendees bring a gift.  no matter what you put on invite, I would bring a gift.  because if I didn't, I feel you'd think "x didn't bring a housewarming gift".  ask people to make a donation, maybe you'll get some human fund cards.

I think, at least around here, that an "open house" implies something much less formal than

There is no set time.  People can just drop in and go whenever they want.  Drop on, grab a bite to eat, grab a beer, hang out...no big deal.

sounds like you're sitting shiva and people are making shiva calls.  just cover your mirrors, all will be fine.
