Osi Umenyiora (1 Viewer)

Osi was ranked DL1 or DL2 by most people during the offseason. After 5 weeks he is ranked DL62. Not quite what we expected. Huh.

I think he has had one of the toughest schedules so far.

Week #1: home vs Colts. P Manning is not sacked a lot and he does not fumble a lot.

Week #2: at Philly. Not as bad a matchup as the Colts, but certainly not great.

Week #3: at Seattle. Hasselbeck has struggled this season, his protection has not been very good, but I believe Osi was facing Walter Jones during that game, and Hasselbeck's protection problems are not coming from Jones' side. Again, tough matchup.

Week #4: Bye

This week, Osi showed some sign of life with 3 tackles, 1 assist, and 1 sack at home against the Skins. The Skins don't allow many sacks either, so I thought it was very encouraging.

Osi's schedule eases up pretty soon with two games against fumbling statue Bledsoe (week #7 and week #13), a rookie QB for the Bucs in week #8, Carr in week #9, and Ten in week #12.

Have you seen anything in Osi's game so far that makes you think he will not have a good season from this point on?

I am not so concerned so far about the lack of sacks (2 in four games is not horrible) and no forced fumbles. The only thing that concerns me a little is the lack of tackles. Only about 10 in four games. I expect him to do better regardless of the matchup.

Good info. I really like this dude. He is the one i've been targeting since trying to get rid of Chuck Grant.

I'm disappointed in his year so far. He seems to average 3pts a game I saw him in Seattle this year. Completely nullified by Jones. Like a man guarding a boy. I hope he plays well from here on out.

I just traded for him last week seeing the upcoming schedule and knowing he was a serious buy low candidate.

Unfortunately, if he doesn't turn it around my DL will now consist of Schobel, Grant and Umenyiora. Perhaps I should change my team name to the Chronic Underachievers.

I tend to believe patience will be rewarded for Osi owners. I'm not going to blame the schedule as much as the scheme. Tim Lewis's D simply was ineffective across the board in the season's first three weeks. Every player on the field looked hesitant. Last week's win over Washington was much closer to the preseason expectation level.

I do agree that the schedule hasn't been the easiest for Osi to date. Manning is difficult to sack. McNabb is elusive and Hasselback's blind side is guarded by Walter Jones, but keep in mind Umenyiora dealt Jones one of the worst games I've ever seen him play a year ago in Seattle when he beat him routinely.

I think if the Giants D builds on last week's performance Umenyiora can still be a double digit sack guy this year. I'd gladly take him off someone's hands! Don't fret the tackle numbers either. The Giants didn't see a lot of rushing attempts until last week. Prior to then everyone was moving the ball through the air. There wasn't a reason to run.

Did the Giants change their defensive scheme after their bye week?

Osi's going to be fine and finish in the top 5-10 DL. The Giants were buried in the Seattle and Philly games, really defanging the pass rush, and as was stated above, it's always tough to get to Peyton. Osi got a sack in the first game that it was reasonable to expect one. This week could be real tough if Atlanta's running game gets rolling, but the schedule softens up, again as pointed out in the initial post.

a great buy low before last week, and still probably below his real value in most people's minds.

They simplified it a LOT. They really ran a lot of basic schemes where the reads and adjustments were made presnap. Demps made a comment about how they didn't have to "think" last week against the Skins, they just played. That could be taken as a positive or a negative depending on how you look at it. But to answer your question, yes they made some modifications, most notably they tried to limit the number of reads that were necessary after the snap and just stuck with pre-snap adujstments. They also allowed Sam Madison to play much closer to the LOS to take advantage of his bump and run skills. He had been giving far too much cushion prior to that game. They looked like a team that was thinking too much prior to the Skins game. So the good news is they had a complete defensive gem. The bad news is they likey can't play such a simple defensive concept every week. Opposing coordinators will rip that apart given time to break it down.

I made the decision to trade Osi this week for Rashean Mathis. I needed a stud DB, and I think Mathis is that. At least for now. And I am pretty solid at DE having Grant, Darrion Scott, Adeyanju, and Darryl Tapp, who I really think will be big very soon. And I only have to start 1 of them, 2 at most.

Very insightful. Thanks for the feedback.

Not trying to pick a fight but I hate that trade.

Upcoming schedule is very nice. Osi now has 3 sacks in the last two games. Forgot his first three games - chances are very good he will be top 5 from here on out.
