Since we're talking furniture in here, I'm looking for a decent TV stand that would hold a 46" TV for under $400. I'd prefer something with glass doors rather than open for the electronics since we have a toddler. TIA.
Because when a toddler is involved, glass is generally a great choice?

It's not like she'll be punching it, I don't think. Maybe I can get something with doors but put the DirecTV box on top of the stand next to the TV? I don't know. We currently have a big tube TV so the box sits on top of the TV. But I'm finally upgrading to LCD or Plasma.

By the way, this should show you something. I've been a parent for 6.5 years but still most of the time don't know what I'm doing. You pretty much wing it most of the time. Don't think you'll ever have everything "figured out". You never will.

:goodposting: But you'll run into plenty of people who will give advice like they've got it figured out.

We got a great TV stand for about 400-500 I think a year or so ago from this store called Platypus. They have 33-50% off sales every once in awhile and the stuff is great quality. I think they may only be a Northeast US store but they are online too. http://www.platypusonline.com/romafu.html

Holy ####, Brit, you love to take pictures.
I have to take these pictures, post them in chat, and have people explain to me WTF I have gotten myself into.Otis> You're rich. I would hire someone to make something like JerseyToughGuys has. I'm poor so I have to do this myself.
I think in that patio thread I briefly considered doing a much smaller, version myself. That type of stuff is fun, but that's some break breaking ####.

If everyone you run into has figured out one little something, you should be all ears...

We don't even know what to do with ourselves

Can't wait for the Otis "I haven't slept in days, Remember how silly I was when I thought I could build a Patio or do ANY home projects" Thread.

I'm prepared for that, I think. Or maybe not. We'll be looking for something exactly like that for the TV stand. Right now it's sitting on two old tall Ikea wall units turned on their side and stacked. I'd like to get something that is low height, long (we have a 63" plasma), but doesn't stick out very far from the wall (the room is not very wide and I don't want that TV in our laps 6 feet away). I definitely want something that fits the boxes in it, because right now they don't fit into our current unit and they are stacked on the side and there are wires everywhere and it looks like crap. However, I'll try to avoid glass if I can, because I don't want me toddler smashing it in 2 years but beyond that glass is just a ##### to keep clean/dust and smudge-free. I'll let you know if I see anything that fits your parameters.

Otis, did you pick up one of Restoration Hardwares 1000 dollar cribs? Or did you buy an overly leathered hideous 1000 dollar chair?
How about 1k worth of dining tableBooyah!!
Where are the RH and PB outlets? May be a bit of a drive for me but could be worth it
Tanger Outlets way out in Eastern long island. Pro tip: go to the Tanger shopper services storefront and sign up for their Tanger card. It costs 10 bucks. They give you 4 coupons for 20% off. Pottery Barn didn't accept them (pissed me off), but Restoration Hardware did. 20% is a nice chunk of change on a $2500 sofa...

Somehow, I've run more and done more home improvement projects in the month since my kid was born than I ever did before he was born. That's partly because it's been nice out, and partly because I haven't had a drop of booze or played any cards since then so I don't know what else to do with my time.

"Balustrade tables like these were once part of life in medieval 17th century monasteries. Today, our reproduction is true to the original's hand-hewn style and trestle design. "Does not compute.

You can make your own one of these also, pretty easily. This was the first real woodworking project I did.

TV Stand

It turned out pretty decent (I know I could do better now). It's like making a cabinet pretty much. You could also easily make small doors for it, perhaps with some translucent plexiglass so the remote would go through, but no smudges or glass breaking as Otis called out.

That's pretty sweet. Man, Brit is a handy dude.

Restoration hardware :lmao: Why don't you put your 63 inch plasma on the wall? :rolleyes:You da king oat. Congrats on the baby
I've thought about it, but I think that's more hassle than it's worth. First off, then I have to figure out a way to get back there to swap out connections and stuff. I guess you can get some sort of box put in a closet somewhere, but this is an old home and we don't have a huge media closet like all you folks out in the sticks. Also, there's the problem of the cable box, PS3, Apple TV etc. -- so you make a big fuss to put the TV up on the wall, but then you still need something to house all this stuff. At this point I'm happy keeping it simple and just putting it all on some kind of stand.

Between this and the retaining wall setup color me impressed.

I don't think I could do that. I don't even have a router.

Low Built In put into both corners. And once you hook everything up, you're good to go, unless you figure to change out your electronics frequently. And even then, if you just run high end wiring to every outlet and label them, you have every connector available

Of course every kid is different and you may be lucky... BUT, you also have the most flexible Work / Sleep schedule out of every employed person I know.... Lawyers I know that commute to NYC every day are pretty much the opposite of that. And when you're dead tired from interupted sleep during the week, it bleeds into the weekend....I will say that it got worse though as the child was more mobile... When it sits there and just ####'s and eats in 1 spot all day you can get more work done and even go out to nice dinners, at least that's what we found.

Wow.... Can I ask what site you use to ask your questions.

Are the top and bottom exactly the same... When you made the router cuts for the verticals I guess you have to stop before the edges - didn't look like you did though in the pics.

I need a custom fit stand like this...

Not sure when you are starting the kitchen remodel but if you hired your own home inspector, you could call them up and ask how much it would cost to come out pre and post drywall during the remodel to check the electric/wall support/gas/etc. I wouldn't trust a city/village inspector to actually check everything. It was explained to us like this: a city inspector is checking for code (which is like getting a D on a test as it is technically passing) and only checks a select few things whereas a personal home inspector is checking everything to see if it is done up to manufacturer directions which is often more in depth than code. When we built our house 2 years ago, the city inspector happened to come through when our home inspector was here. The city inspector was here 15 mintutes and our home inspector was here 3-4 hours.

We also had a half acre sloping yard and had a lot of it cut out last fall and just finished the final excavation and grading last week. We basically have upper front/sides and a flat, lower level backyard then a hill with woods that goes down to our creek. We just created two hills on both sides of the house coming from the upper to lower yard and we are going to build steps out of the large rocks that came from all the excavating. I am beyond ready for all this to be finished. We just put down our grass seed last night and tonight I went and bought 25 trees to plant along the back of our yard this weekend. It is neverending but worth it. Good luck with everything (especially the baby!).

I mostly ask my GBs at OBC or Cabinchat. There is a lot of collective knowledge in chat. There is a good woodworking forum called sawmill creek though that I have browsed. Top and bottom are oak veneer plywood. I routed rabbets into them to slide the verticals into. There is no router work on the verticals, I just cut strips of solid oak and laminated on the edge so it looks finished with no unfinished parts.

I actually don't really love the routed pieces. They don't really fit the style of my house. I was just excited to use the router. Someday I might take it apart and rebuild it a little differently.

Seriously considering a pickup as our second car. I could see myself finding all sorts of excuses to spin over to home depot on a Saturday am. Gotta get some gravel. Bricks. Mortar. Whatever. Just some stuff to haul. Used Ford F150 a good choice here? What are you hillbillies driving these days?

Hey O>Did you guys close yet? When is the remodel going down? Be prepared to be a bit stressed. New baby, move, remodel. That's a lot.

We are going through 1 and 3 (on a smaller scale) and I believe my wife may murder one of us (hoping it is the contractor).

Indeed, I drive a Ford F150.

Something to think about before you do this...I grew up in small-town MN. Almost every family had at least 1 pickup truck. Moved to the affluent suburbs of Chicago (somewhat similar to NY I would imagine) and NO ONE has a 'real' pickup (lots of SUV's, minivans). If you get a real pickup, you will be the ONLY one most of your neighbors and friends know with a real pickup. Which leads to a lot of requests to help move, pick up lumber, landscaping material etc.

NOT in "The Port.":no:The Home Depot makes their trucks available for anything that won't fit in my Isuzu Trooper. And that has been never. ;)

Just from what you present here on FBG, I'd suggest sticking with a car and renting a truck as needed.

Someone above mentioned this, and several friends have as well. Seems like a potential downside. Then again, maybe being the guy who can help out friends, relatives, neighbors with that isn't such a bad thing. :shrug:But yeah, I can see how it could become a PIA
