House looks very nice and comfortable. I'd be happy there. I suggest you try to do the work yourself -- build the patio, etc. There's a lot to be said for manual labor, especially for those of us who spend most of our time in front of a computer. Feels good to finish a job. If you hate it, you can always hire out, but at least try it.
Gonna have to disagree. If you don't feel you can handle it get a pro from the start. Otherwise you pay him to fix your mistakes and then do the job.
I'm not saying he should try anything over his head. Almost anyone can build a brick patio.
That's what I was thinking. How hard can this be? Throw down some sand, some mud, throw the bricks down in a pretty pattern, let dry, celebrate. There have to be at least a handful of these projects here that I can take on myself. I didn't move all the way out to the burbs to pay some other Joe to do all the heavy lifting.
Funny what you find when you read through the thread again.
I was going to quote that too, but it felt like mocking the disabled.
How many trees you guys cut down this weekend? :bowtie:
I'm still trying to understand why you're mowing down all of these trees.
Why do you shave and get a haircut?
Can I at least get a "before" pic before we start delving into uncomfortable manscaping analogies?

After year 1 not much settling in the house....we're 3 years in and we're seeing a lot of nail pops in the drywall. Problem is our builder came out to fix nail pops after 10 months, we didn't have that many at 10 months. In the walls they're easy to fix, in the ceiling they're a pain.
What have you done for the ceiling nail pops? I've got about 4 I need to take care of. We have a some of that textured ceiling, though, so not sure what to do.
Remove the nail, put in a sheetrock screw below the surface. Then patch with spackle and this or this

Probably true. The one above is one I have looked at too. It looks sorta boring though. And I could see the charcoal grill being a great option for that time I have an empty propane tank and don't feel like refilling it. Keep charcoal on reserve and you always have a backup.
If you go with gas, just keep two tanks at home. You basically always have a full one ready to go at all times. Just rotate them and don't forget to refill/replace the backup.I prefer charcoal, but I can definitely see the convenience/benefits of gas.

Now a haircut makes you uncomfortable?

I grew up in the country.
Really?
can verify (sorta)
If he grew up where I think he grew up, I don't know if that's "the country".
:coffee:
I'd call it "small town". Not rural enough to be "country".
You might be confused. This isn't the same house where you puked on the kitchen floor.
You might want to be even more specific.
catching up on the blog, and had to lol at this one.

what's on the docket for this weekend?
- Crew of landscapers here this morning for a major cleanup  Well worth the :moneybag: - Guy came in and gave us a quote on siding. For maybe the first time ever, the amount we had in mind ended up being just right or a little high even. Didn't bother to haggle much, gave him a deposit on the spot. All new siding will be done in the next couple of weeks.- Got a quote back for the masonry all along the front walkway. 18 grand? Yeah, I don't think we'll be doing that. However, I'm tempted to call the guy back and get a quote just to redo the front stoop and do something nice there. I figure a few thousand, but could be worth it.- Been working on the home automation system. Got the second thermostat replaced with my wireless version and got the network up and running and connected to the iPad. Awaiting a shipment to replace some of the wall dinners, outlets, and to put a wireless lock on the front door. Project coming along. It's not high priority, but it's what I work on to fill time between other things (wife is off getting her nails done or somesuch nonsense and I'm babysitting)- Wife and I need to shoot out and do some shopping shortly. Some small stuff -- rugs, a small kitchen table, some other things here and there. May stop off at Home Depot or a nursery at some point to pick up flowers for the large planter in the yard, and may also pick up a grill today. New patio set is incoming early next week, so with the grill we will be fully up and running for some backyard chilling/entertaining. :thumbup:We decided to give ourselves a break this weekend, since the past few weeks have been hectic, so I have no grand ambitions. But if we can knock a few more things out today, I'll be feeling :moneybag:

What ever happened to the kitchen remodel?
Put it on hold. Didn't want to spend all that money in one place right now -- too many other things needed help, and it's really all we would have been in a position to do. That's probably two-three years down the road. In the meantime we at least got new appliances in there and it will be painted, and I'm tempted to throw down some cheap vinyl flooring over what's there now, just to get by.I think ultimately when we do the kitchen, which will be serious work, we may also want to build out, so we may wait to do that all at once.In the meantime, we're spending less money spread over multiple different things and addressing more problems.Man this landscaping crew is still going at it, 4 hours later...

Out of curiosity, how many landscapers and how much did it run ya?I feel ya on the masonry. We're in Westchester and had two masonry stair cases rebuilt and walkway redone in blue stone and it ran us about $12k. In my opinion, of all the projects we've done since we moved in two years ago it was the second best money we spent after new windows. Nice masonry work outside does so much for curb appeal. Let me know if you want my guy's contact info and/or pics of his work. Not sure if he goes to LI, but he was very good and very well-priced compared to other estimates.

I'd definitely appreciate your guy's number and some pics of his work. :hifive: $1200 to give the whole property a once-over, including the uprooted and cut down trees and bushes we stacked on the front lawn. He had 5 or 6 guys here initially, 4 later on. They started work at 9 and I think didn't leave until around three. It would have taken me all year to get this work done. Well worth it -- place looks great.

Effing previous owners for getting these weird ### toilets. They have some kind of pressure flush thing -- when you remove the lid on the back of the tank there's a giant rubber balloon in there with all kinds of warning notices. I feel like I'm defusing an IED.

Why am I screwing with the guest bathroom toilet? Well, the prior owners kindly left the damn seat detached. And for some reason these effing screwy toilets have the two holes in the top to screw the seat into, but nothing at the bottom to put the screws through and tighten the nuts. Instead the bottom of the hole is coming from inside the tank, and of course I can't get to it with this giant black death balloon in the way, and I can't figure out how to remove the thing either. Two trips to home depot, I've got three toilet seats spread out on the floor with a bunch of screws, and no solution other than "#### it, I guess I have to call a plumber." Which is totally going to be an embarassing phone call. "Hi I need emergency plumbing assistance because my mother in law will be staying two days and I need the guest bathroom working for her." "What seems to be the problem son?" "I can't put on the toilet seat."

:wall:

Any ideas here?

Otis, I completely understand hiring the mowing and weed-eating out if you have the money to pay for it. Use that free time to enjoy your family and work on other, more enjoyable projects. Once you get to know neighbors, you might be able to find someone's kid to do it a bit cheaper than the landscaping company.

What a coinkidink. I replaced my toilet seat last month. I don't remember what I did to remove it. I think I had to unscrew it from inside the water tank. I have to check it out again to refresh my memory. The balloon in the tank is a standard feature. Maybe the problem is you have giant hands?

Yep, took one minute to unscrew the seat from inside the tank. Put on the replacement and screwed it back on. The whole project took me 5 minutes. What seems to be the problem with your toilet?

Hint: if the water in tank is too cold for your giant hands, flush to reduce the water level before you reach in towards the front.

Got some guy off craigslist to swing by today to pick up the crappy plastic patio set they left behind -- new one inbound as we speak.

Craigslist is totally awesome.
I've been wanting some patio furniture. Details on what you got?
I think we got this one. These Martha Stewart patio sets are actually pretty comfortable and seem to be at least fairly decent quality. We also liked this particular set as compared with a few others is because it didn't require cushions, which you'd have to take in and out according to the weather. These seems like they'll be lower maintenance. We still need to get an umbrella -- I think the quality of the umbrellas on these isn't great, so we'll get it somewhere else (I saw some sweet ones with internal lighting at Overstock, may go with one of those).

Almost picked up one of these today: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202520220/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

But they seemed to have some other nice looking grills that seemed decent and were a bunch cheaper. Really I just need fire and some metal, maybe it's not worth the extra money for the Weber stuff?

Like this thing seemed pretty cool, and has charcoal too, and it's cheap: http://www.homedepot.com/Outdoors-Grills-Grill-Accessories/Brinkmann/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbxazZ39n/R-202664595/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Also the Charbroil ones seemed decent too, and were also a bunch less expensive. The Weber did feel the most sturdy of the lot...

We had a cheapy Charbroil that my parents bought us and it lasted about 6 years before crapping out. I was mad still feeling like it was new, but the reviews were all crap and said we'd be lucky to get 6 years. go figure. We got a Weber Spirit last year and while the food still tastes the same, I still like the Weber better and if I could do it all over, I'd get the Weber. Splurge for new grates for 2 years and keep the burners free from spiders and life is good.
