Pac 10 Question (1 Viewer)

Maybe you guys out West can help me on this one.

Much was made of Leinart going to a "Pac 10 city" and how it was a good thing. He'd have a fan base and be well received yada yada.

Was this just talking head stuff or is there anything to that?

I know in the SEC, that wouldn't be any plus at all. In fact, a guy like Jevon Kearse (awesome at Florida) actually had a lot of negatives coming to Nashville. UT fans in Nashville hate Florida. The better the player the worse it is.

Is it different out West? Certainly Leinart doesn't suffer from any name recognition no matter where he'd play. He's one of the most recognizable guys in the league today. It's not like people in Phoenix have heard of him but people in Detroit haven't.

Anything to that?

Yea, I'd say it's different out here. The rivalries are more friendly. The local rivalries (USC/UCLA, Cal/Stanford) can get a bit heated, but you're not going to see a lot of Arizona State/USC animosity. For the most part, I think the other teams respect the other teams in the conference and wish them well (when they're not in direct competition).

Yeah, he'll love that PAC-10 city. Sure, it's 121 dgrees in the shade, but it's a dry heat!

The interstate rivalries in the PAC-10 are intense, but out of state the cities are located so far apart for the most part that it's harder to generate a genuine hate like it was in the Big 10. Fan bases don't travel well either, which helps in the lack of utter dislike.

As far as the comments go, though, I thought they were pretty meaningless leaning towards the stupid side.

They like to band together so the alums from the weaker schools can ride the coattails of USC and enjoy championships they'll never get.

:goodposting: Unless a college player is a straight out thug, people in Phoenix (both ASU and UofA fans) respect the success Leinart had and saw first hand and are excited to have someone of that caliber now play for their team.

Not sure how anyone could hate Leinart after his career where he showed nothing but class.

Tons of LA residents have moved to Phoenix. That is where the Pac10 association comes from. Also, most people who live out west are from somewhere else--their families haven't been planted in the same region for generation after generation like folks back east. Leinart is a name most Cardinals fans know well due to the amount of TV coverage USC has gotten over the past few years. People in the EST certainly know who he is too, but they were probably in bed by time alot of his games were aired.

Thanks bagger. It is different then. That's cool and helps me understand. But to add, I can easily see how people would hate him. Lots of people hate Manning. I agree they didn't do anything to deserve it but it just happens sometimes.

We see our conference as highly and unfairly disrespected. So we're happy to see others succeed to shut up the ugly east coast media. I'm a Bruin through and through. My bro a Trojan. I hope Matt, Reggie, Winston, LenDale, Darnell, Deuce, Fred etc., all do great; and he loves Maurice Drew. That's an inner family cross town rivalry for ya!

Matt Leinart was voted as one of the 100 most beautiful persons...we're just better looking out West.

Pac10 = Conference of Champions

It's about the West Coast attitude as well, which Leinart is the poster boy of now. Where we just don't care as much as East Coasters do about the little things. People aren't as pretentious, career driven, concerned about social status etc. It's more about going to the beach on a Sunday than reading the WallStreet Journal on a Monday.

More about wearing sandals and board shorts to your favorite bar than wearing your coat and tie to a bar after working 12 hours.

Totally different cultures.

It should be noted that this is a bogus post. U of A fans are not well educated enough to be able to move into the Phoenix area (except for employment to assume the menial tasks, or course, but they have to commute from Buckeye or Casa Grande).Carry on.

I don't spend 1/100th the amount of time talking about my conference as you do.Sorry you went to such a sucky athletic school, that forces you to cling onto an entire league.

well, the LA/Hollywood thing throws things a bit out of whack, but I'm speaking to the vast majority of the West Coast, not just a small microcosm of it.

I hate USC. The two hardest games for me every year are USC-Stanford and USC-Notre Dame, because I desperately want both teams to lose.

That said, I do tend to root for Pac-10 teams other than USC and Stanford in non-conference action. Actually, I would limit that to USC football (which has the most obnoxious fan base and band I've ever had the displeasure to share a stadium with); I don't root against USC basketball.

And there's certainly an effect that we on the west coast get tired of hearing about how weak the Pac-10 supposedly is. There's no conference with a better record of consistently competing for and winning NCAA championships.

 Yet there is always some dip#### analsyt like Dukey Vitale, trying to call the Pac10 conference weak...and then UCLA strolls to the National Championship game.

It happens every year, and every year we show up in a National Championship game...despite signficantly less media coverage and despite significantly fewer schools.

I think it has something to do with our superior genetics.

The conference of champions schools band together as they share their inferiority complex.

We are feeling very inferior out west....man I wish I was living in Jersey.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Lack of media coverage, less games aired nationally than East coast teams, the stigma of not being tough, playing no defense, lack of pagentry, etc.The Pac-10 get less attention and respect nationally and rightfully should have an inferiority complex, do you not agree?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Here's the definition of inferiority complex:A persistent sense of inadequacy or a tendency to self-diminishment, sometimes resulting in excessive aggressiveness through overcompensation.

We don't feel inadequate and we don't self diminish, we merely recognize the East Coast Bias and don't stand for it...big difference there.

Where they got hammered by an East Coast team.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
We have one major conference and that conference has 10 schools.By percentages the Pac10 VASTLY outperforms the East Coast Conferences.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Your conference has one football school that you hitch your wagon to (see above post about heismans and titles). I've thrown numbers at you for years now that show you how crappy your conference fares overall in OOC and bowl games, which you constantly ignore, in lieu of posting more of your tired shtick instead.I know it's easier for you to post your catchphrase then to face reality, but try to call a spade a spade. The Pac-10 doesn't match up guy.

Hey Joe, My theory basically goes, ASU fans (AZ guys) are jeallous of Matt Leinarts success (and USCs in general). They get an up close and personal look at it every year. They are likely happy now that he will be helping them rather then hurting them.

Florida vs UT are not likely to support each others players in the profootball environment as UT fans are not jeallous of Floridas success (or Kearse's success). Funny you should mention it Joe, but when I lived in Nashville, the Vandy people I knew and still know all very much liked Kearse but the UTs weren't all in support.

Put it another way, lets say ASU is an absolute football powerhouse, a real rival of USC. Leinart would likely not be welcomed to Phoneix with open arms, hope that helps.
