Packers Release Billy Cundiff (1 Viewer)

No link yet but the Packers have released K Billy Cundiff today. I'm surprised he lasted this long to be honest.

Is he a lock for the job...16 teamer survivor drafters want to know.
Hard to say. They had Edinger visiting camp briefly and I don't know why they don't sign him. He has struggled of late but it's not like Rayner (or Cundiff) are any better. Unless money is an obstacle I'd like to see the Packers sign Edinger or Todd Peterson, preferably Peterson. I really dislike the idea of playing cheap with special teams.

Rayner's the only K left on the roster, so I'd say yes.
It's silly not to bring someone in to challenge him. The guy's pretty much a camp body. It makes zero sense to just give him the job without more of a challenge. And yes I realize that the Packers are hardly a kicker away from being a playoff team but you'd still like to be solid at least in that area.

Please release me, let me go

For I hate kicking in the snow

To play in Green Bay would be a sin

Release me and let me kick again

:goodposting: You will also have to deal with about 65 Favre is retiring rumor press conferences as the losses continue to mount. Just not a nice play to be this season.

Check out this article from today's Green Bay Press-Gazette.

It mentions Martin Gramatica as a possible replacement if Gostkowski wins the kicking job in New England, either Matt Stover or Aaron Elling if either is cut in Baltimore, and Paul Edinger.

The Packers released him in favor of this other shmuck who they said they liked his leg power... when his kickoffs averaged FIVE YARDS LESS than Cundiff...

Here's what the Packers are doing- they realize Cundiff is not who they want. They are going to wait until Monday- when the first roster cut down is made- and see who is out there, bring another 2 guys in and see how they look.

Rayner will not be the kicker... if he is then Teddy Thompson needs to get his eyes checked (by the way, has ANYONE seen him blink!?)

Those Gramatica's crack me up. They're like watching Shih Tzus, hyper as a MF after they make a field goal.

The kicker for the Packers is currently on another roster right now. Thompson had to have some guys in camp and basically from the radio reports, Cundiff had such a bad attitude and work ethic that they didn't even bother waiting until the cuts were made.

I think this also makes it a little easier on other teams cutting the bu kicker. All they have to do is say, you gotta go, here's a plane ticket to Lambeau. later.

Regardless, unless a name guy is cut that can provide servicable duties I think this is a situation you stay far away from.

I attended nearly all of Rayner's college games and find that really, really hard to believe. Rayner knocked kickoffs out of the back of the end zone regularly, and his extra points and short field goals often cleared the kicking net and went way up in to the stands.Rayner isn't consistently accurate, and I don't doubt that the Packers would want another kicker. But he has serious leg power.

"We had talked as a staff that probably over the course of the next couple games we want to give Rayner the vast majority of kicks to see how he did. We felt it was appropriate that with a veteran like Cundiff, we release him now so he can have a chance to latch on with somebody else. I like the way the ball comes off (Rayner's) foot. We're going to put him in a position where he gets a chance at a lot of kicks in different situations and we'll see how he does."

"(Rayner) is competing against a whole army of kickers out there. We'll see how he does. He's still competing with every kicker that's ever put on a shoe."

- GM Ted Thompson

Based on what I've seen of Rayner last year - I'd be surprised if he keeps the job for long. He didn't impress any Colts fan last year with his kicking (and this is kicking in a dome, not in a frozen tundra).
