A rumor running rampant on Twitter and the Internet at large involves a contention that Bengals cornerback Pacman Jones was arrested after Sunday's loss to the Buccaneers. The Bengals tell us that Pacman Jones indeed was arrested. But the Bengals also claim that Jones has been released. Per Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan, the police have characterized it as a case of mistaken identity. So Pacman was indeed arrested. But, according to the team, he was released without charges.

This was incorrect. Adam Jones is not in trouble.

Police chief apologizes to Adam Jones

CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati's police chief is apologizing to Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, who was questioned by officers on Sunday.

Chief Tom Streicher said at a news conference Monday that the police department made a mistake and that Jones did nothing wrong. The chief calls the episode unfortunate.

Police said Jones was questioned after he drove his vehicle over a downtown curb to avoid another vehicle or pedestrian in his way. He was released without a citation or charges.

Witnesses took cell-phone photos and shared them on social media sites with captions claiming -- incorrectly -- that Jones had been arrested. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Monday that Jones was disappointed with the way the matter had been portrayed.
