Palmer: Should be changes on coaching staff

Quarterback Carson Palmer met with reporters this morning in the Bengals locker room and, in typical fashion, answered questions honestly.

He talked of the need for the Bengals to put the disappointing season behind them and come back a rejuvinated team with a tighter focus and more disciplined.

Then he was asked if the same coaching staff can lead that turnaround.

"I don't think so," Palmer said.

Do you think there should be a change in coaches?

"I think so," he said.

Do you think there will be?

"Like I said, I don't make those decisions. I play quarterback."

Do you know what's going on?

"No."

Even in terms of the coaches you work most closely with, quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese and offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski?

"No. Like I said. I don't know."

Throughout much of the Bengals now-completed 7-9 season,Palmer looked tired and worn out.

This morning we found out why.

"Oh, yeah. I think the amount of sleep I lost this year. I think I've aged. I'm 28 going on 34. I think I lost a couple years," he said. "Frustrating. Times I felt sick to my stomach and I didn't have the flu. Just a long, long, frustrating year, but in saying that, I wish we could start all over and play 16 games right now. I'm not ready to go home.

"This is my most disappointing year of any sports, junior Pop Warner to T-ball to now. The losses, the way we lost, the fact we're going to be watching the playoffs from our couches, the fact we don't have practice next week."

Would would he do to improve the team?

"We have enough problems and enough areas we need to improve on that it's not a short list," he said. "Hopefully the things will happen that need to happen for us to be the team we can be. I haven't been asked. Like I said, I would love to give input, and I have great input to give."

Is the window of opportunity closing on the core group of Bengals key players?

"I don't think so," he said. "(But) every year you say that. Pretty soon next year you're retiring and hanging them up. The guys on this team who need to realize that realize that. Pretty soon it's over, you're an alum or a fan and have to get a real job and put on a suit every day. We need to approach this offseason in a new way and come back a rejuvinated team."

I think he'd like to see Ken Zampese as the offensive coordinator. And he might get his wish. If he doesn't, teams (CAR in particular) have been sniffing around Zampese for two or three years now. No one knows for sure which coaches are still under contract (other than Marvin Lewis) for 2008, but if Zampese is a free agent, the Bengals won't be able to block him from moving this offseason.

Right or not, Carson Palmer is a Grade A turd!!! He's a complete crybaby who seems to blame everyone else. What kind of leader comments to the media that members of the coaching staff should be fired? Just shut your mouth, Carson. I don't know who I hate more - Carson Palmer or Chad Johnson.

Whatever man, God forbid anyone should show a little passion. He's right and we all know it.

That's not the point. The point is it's not his place to say crap like that in the media.Maybe he should just work on not taking so many delay of game penalties (and looking around in bewilderment when the flag is thrown) instead of shooting his mouth off to the media. And by the way, "I think so" is showing a little passion????

Maybe he said it real forceful-like.And he's totally right. Wholesale changes need to be made on the defensive side of the ball. A few tweaks on offense as well.

Hmmm... a team leader - you mean like someone who speaks FOR the team?I tihnk Palmer fit that bill perfectly, as I'm pretty sure every member of the Bengals team feels like the coaching was terrible this year.

Maybe he just try to do better himself. Or at least keep his criticism in-house. In this article, he blamed everyone but himself. Blamed other players and blamed coaches. That's not who I'd want as a leader.

Didn't the head coach come out and say much of the same things? That there's a group of players that the team needs to rid itself of. I see nothing wrong with what he said.

Guess it's good you're not on the Bengals then :goodposting: Not particularly a Bengals fan, but Palmer is a solid QB, and plays his heart out. Few QBs I'd rather have than him if I was running a team.

The irony of that division has been that Brian Billick was a far better fit for that offensive oriented roster than his own, and ditto Marvin Lewis with regards to the Ravens. They should have swapped.

I'd love to see what you guys would say if T.O. or Moss said something similar.

Yes he did. And they both (Palmer and Lewis) look lesser for it.

There's a credibility thing that comes into play. Moss and TO have both said similar things over and over again. This is the first time I've heard Palmer say it. That tends to make me think he might have put a little more thought into it. If CJ said it, I would have ignored the thread.

Last time I checked, there are 16 teams in the AFC and only 6 make the playoffs each season. There are 10 teams with alot of woulda-coulda-shouldas. A game here, a game there and a 7-9 team is a 10-6 team and in the playoff hunt. Cincy cryfacing over a 7-9 season is pretty funny considering where that franchise was 10 years ago.

I like to flip cincy a lot of crap but all trash talk aside:When an offense with firepower like that finishes 17th in the league in both yards and points, some is really wrong. They do need a shake up over there.

I think Carson is thinking about where this team was 2 years ago.Regressing with the same core group of guys is very frustrating. This team was the division winner and had a real shot up until Carson's knee was blown out. He rehabbed a season ago and this year they were supposed to be back in the hunt. They had high hopes and those hopes were dashed. It's more gut-wrenching and depressing to expect to do well and fail, than to just fail with no expectations.

But they aren't the same guys. Yes, Palmer, Housh, CJ, Rudi are there but some of the most important guys, their best lineman either left or were injured. That makes all the difference in the world.

As a leader he should say those things. The NFL is a players league, not a league like in the 60s when players answered coaches with yes sir, and right away sir. The coaches are just as much accountable as players and sometimes things need to be said out in the open. It makes it too easy to shuffle under the rug if tough things are siad behind closed doors, because it's the coaches who are in charge. Now if it's players talking about players, or coaches talking about players, then yes, it should be behind closed doors, but it's different when we're talking about the leader of the team speaking out about coaches.

:goodposting: I'd be a hell of a lot more disappointed if he said, "well, we're better than we were 7 years ago. So what if we didn't make the playoffs"

Well, Palmer did that too. He didn't name specific names, but he talked about "other guys" not working hard enough. He pointed out how he's doing everything he needs to be doing but that there are other players who aren't. Again, if Palmer was a better player, I might not have as much of a problem with this, but he was as bad as anyone on that team this year. And, no, I don't have Carson Palmer on my fantasy team. I just think he's one of the more overrated players in this league. He's very inconsisent. He makes stupid decisions. He's not aware of things going on around him and is very, very quick to point out the faults of others. He never accepts any of the blame himself.

Apparently you do not follow the Bengals much. There were several times this year where Carson has come out and said that he played poorly and was the reason for the loss. After Rams game..."At this position, and where we are as a team, I need to play great every week," Palmer said. "And I haven't been great every week.""They caught me with my eyes in the wrong spot. I didn't see the guy crashing from the outside—the corner come flying in. They just made a good play. I need to do a better job of seeing that and expecting that coverage earlier, readjusting my read and decision, and (instead) taking off and running in that situation." After Steelers game..."I knew where he was going; I just didn't throw good balls to him," Palmer said. "I failed to make the adjustment, putting more air under the ball and thinking and knowing and expecting him to be a little bit slower out of his breaks than normal."After Cardinals game..."He cheated on the route. He just jumped inside of T.J. I don't know if they knew the play or what," Palmer said. "But I've got to see that." "It was a really sloppy game offensively; sloppy mainly on my part," Palmer said. "Like I said, when I throw four picks, it makes it tough." The slightest bit of research would show you this. If anything, I think he tends to put too much of the blame on himself, and his teammates agree. In arguably the worst game of his career, Palmer said he felt he let everyone down from teammates, coaches and fans, but his mates would have none of it. "You can't throw the whole blame on Carson," said tight end Reggie Kelly."You can't blame Carson; he's trying to make plays," said Houshmandzadeh. "He's taking chances because we're behind and trying to win games.
