Panthers are Alexander's backup plan (1 Viewer)

This is a good ploy by the Panthers and the Alexander camp. How could Seattle let him go to what was the #2 team in the NFC this year? I don't think Seattle will give him the money the Panthers will, but I gotta think he improves his negotiating leverage with Seattle just having this suggested.

NFL Most Valuable Player Shaun Alexander said Thursday he hopes to sign a new contract with Seattle, but the Carolina Panthers would be a strong backup plan. "I tell everybody I don't think Seattle's going to let it get to that. But, if it does get to that, Carolina would definitely be a good place," he said.

No, they aren't. Carolina has no intention of signing Shaun Alexander. They are slated to be about a million dollars over the cap, which isn't that big of a deal. But you need to figure they'll need about $10M to sign Alexander, and about the same to sign Edgerrin James. There was an article about a month ago in a local Carolina Newspaper that was very in-depth about the cap situation for the panthers and why they wouldn't be spending big on any running backs this offseason (Alexander, James, Jamal Lewis).

The most likely back to land on the Panthers would be either Najeh Davenport or Jonathan Wells, guys that can add depth and start if needed, or a mid-round RB (unless a Maroney/Addai/Calhoun were to be appealing enough to them at 27, and they just spent a 2nd rounder on Eric Shelton last draft).

Carolina's RB situation probably won't be solved until next offseason, unless they get a little luck from the draft.

That makes perfect sense. Panthers wanting to bump up Alexander's value so it costs the Seahawks more to keep him. Then that's less money they can spend elsewhere.

True, but after reading your previous post on the Panthers cap situation you have to believe the Seahawks are aware of the Panthers cap situation also. Interesting background. Thanks for the info.

:goodposting: No kidding ... wow, that would put Seattle in a very difficult spot.

On the other hand, I'm sure Seattle would like Carolina to overpay for Alexander. Seattle has played this negotiation almost to perfection. They know the number that they're going to spend on Alexander and are willing to let him test the FA waters. Unless some crazy owner vastly overpays Alexander an ungodly signing bonus($20 million+) he'll be back in Seattle with a good but fair contract.

The only teams that can afford Alexander without mortgaging their offseason and that might go for him are Arizona, Green Bay and Seattle. There's an outside chance of Jacksonville and/or Baltimore being in the race as well. It's really looking like Alexander will be back in Seattle.

For any naysayers, the best argument I can make is that if you were to consider Shaun Alexander a UFA right now, Seattle would easily make the most sense for him. They have the best OL in football, a solid offense and defense, and have absolutely no one at RB. They also have the money to spend and spend big on him without worrying about high draft picks to pay or having to make a lot of big offseason moves (obviously signing Hutchinson will be a big priority).

if you read the link provided it mentions that Peppers has a cap value of 15 mil in 2006 and is looking for a new deal. There's the Shaun money

Peppers will definitely be getting a new deal, Travelle Wharton might get resigned and slightly lower his cap number, and Will Witherspoon - not sure if he will be resigned.

Alexander was wearing a Panthers hat today, :lmao:
That was funny as hell. When asked about why he has a Panthers hat he said he left his Seahawk hat in the locker room or the hotel or something, and that some Panther people gave him a hat to wear, which he said was a nice "gesture". :boxing: Then she said sarcastically "Hes a free agent, but read NOTHING into this" ;)

Then Eisen and Woodson said kiddingly "That could be tampering" :excited:

Should make for an interesting situation this offseason.

Remember Corey Dillon wearing a Raiders jersey during his first major interview during the offseason after he left the Bengals? I wouldn't put much stock in where these guys think they might end up.
