from the Boston Herald...Adam’s bolt a big jolt
ORLANDO, Fla. - For a guy who said he wanted to remain in New England, it didn’t take Adam Vinatieri very long to join the Indianapolis Colts.
According to Colts head coach Tony Dungy, Vinatieri needed just 45 minutes before accepting Indy’s five-year offer last week.
Speaking at the NFL owners meetings yesterday, Dungy said he was as surprised as anyone to hear the 10-year veteran would consider leaving the Patriots. The deal with the Colts went down so fast, Dungy didn’t even talk to Vinatieri until after he agreed to the contract.
Even though Dungy already knew of the Green Bay visit, he expected Vinatieri to resist the idea of departing New England. But the tough sell was never needed.
“He had already indicated he might leave, which made it easier,” Dungy said. “We didn’t have to convince him. (Colts president) Bill (Polian) laid it out and told him, here’s how much you’re going to get paid, we have a great holder and snapper, you get to kick indoors at least half the time, you’re going to be on a contender, and we really want you. About 45 minutes later he called back and said yes.”
