If the Patriots and their fans wanted the benefit of the doubt when ANYTHING shady even looks like it MIGHT be going on, they shouldn't have gotten busted for Spygate and been forced to pay the biggest fine and penalty for cheating in the history of professional sports. Tell me that others did it too and that it wasn't a big deal, but in the end, if it didn't help they wouldn't have done it and if it was wrong they wouldn't have paid the price they did.

It's been anything but a model franchise and skepticism by everyone else is the price you pay when you get caught.

The NFL was always going to have a hard time proving anything. My best guess at this point is that the Patriots do what they do to the balls knowing full well they end up lower than the legal limits and that's what Tom likes. They're detailed enough with how they plan things out that it's insulting for them to say they don't monitor that stuff. Can it be proven? Of course not, so they're safe from that, and it's looking less and less likely that anyone physically did anything to the balls. But all of this is probably going to result in rule changes about how balls are prepared and tested before (and during) the game, that's almost a certainty.

Is that intent to get around the rules? Who knows, everyone will judge that differently and if they get in trouble with the NFL, that's probably what it'll be about. And it doesn't matter if others do it, it matters who got caught doing it. But that's what the Patriots do... they push the envelope any way they can to get an advantage, and some (especially players it seems if pregame shows are any indication) feel it's a shady way to operate a franchise.

In the eyes of their fans, Bill and Brady can do no wrong and if I were a fan of theirs, I'd probably see it that way too. But public perception is very different.
I don't think I've ever disclosed this, but I grew up in the 70's and the Steelers were my favorite team during that period. Given the ridiculous opinions expressed by Steeler fans regarding the Patriots the past two weeks, I'm about ready to renounce my Steeler fandom. Just not at all well informed, and not at all befitting one of the best dynasties in football history.
So Steelers fan in the 70s and Pats fan now? Cowboys fan in the 90s? San Fran in the 80s?
90s niners > 90s boys

Maybe he stuck with the Niners then.

lol, you know he instructed some dude to lower the pressure in the balls. Costas asked him point blank if had anything, instructed anyone, or knew anything about it. He couldn't even say no.

lolz
He doesn't want to impede an ongoing investigation, or so it goes. He has already given himself enough rope if he is implicated. That said, more people probably saw him just punt than they have all other statements he's done to date.

Okay, so apparently the NE balls were all over the place with regard to inflation. Without going back and reading through all the bickering, how does something like that happen? I understand the argument that they were all right at 12.5 and then fell off due to game conditions, but how do you end up with so much variance when the team (presumably) has a method for preparing the balls the way the QB wants them, just like all other teams do.

Not saying that this anything nefarious. This just seems weird.
Because they were all over the place to begin with.
That's what I mean. It seems weird that a team would allow its balls to be all of the place at the get-go. According to BB, the team has a process for preparing their footballs. You'd think that would produce a consistent level of inflation across all 12 of them.
If you look at the experiment conducted on the 12 footballs linked in this thread, the results are similar. A pigskin football has a lot of internal and external variations- there just isnt a uniform reaction to time and temp. Not just that, but it takes time to measure the balls which will affect their readings with temperatures in flux. Bottom line- any 12 footballs in any football game anywhere would show these kinds of variations.

Makes sense. Thanks.

can we get this thread locked at kickoff and just agree none of this ever mattered?

He was pretty clear between all the interviews hes done that no, he doesn't think he did anything wrong and if found to have done something wrong, that would be the first time hes heard it.

Media not getting the answer they want.
Collinsworth's reaction was spot on. Brady had every chance to say I had nothing to do with this, and he did not.

And 100% of the room I was in thought the same thing. Brady is 100% guilty.

When I asked the room whether he'd be caught or punished, only half think he will be. Im one of those who think he'll get away with it.

nope...*after* this interview he started denying it flatly. Apparently he paid whoever he needed to pay soon after this interview...or something to that effect.

That Goodell fella, though. Now there's a straight up guy.

Ahh, yes. Pats fans playbook rule #3.0: Somebody out there is as bad or worse than my guy. And yes, Goodell is worse and youre right...that was CC's worse moment. But Brady is still guilty as sin.

Man that interview really pushed many over the edge on this. Collinsworth really nailed it too.

Of course something was going on but I don't think they see a serious punishment as how can the NFL really prove it.

Guilty of what?

Pats earned this SB. There shall be no asterisk at all. I'm quite sure refs double checked inflation pressure and all. Not an issue. Pats were the better team, congrats and enjoy it.

Or.... maybe the tactile feel of the ball is what's important to the QB, and the inflation level doesn't matter much at all.

Yah they couldn't have won that AFC Championship unless they deflated the balls.... rofl

Looks like they can win a Superbowl with regulation balls.

Congrats pats fans... Even as a salty hater I can admit that this super bowl was one of the best I've seen and rarely do i feel that a super bowl reps the two top teams in a given yr but this one delivered... I feel like regardless of who came out on top both teams had their shot to win... I can second guess the decision to not run lynch all I want but the bottom line is that the pats were prepared for that pick play and they made a play to seal it

Now I'm not sure that karma had one bit of anything to do with it at all but if that lets general Tso feel better than enjoy it general... You're TM deserves all the praise it receives for how the game was played and how they stuck together through it all. I rather enjoy (as I assume most non pats fans enjoy) watching the homers fanboy for their tm especially when the homers get hella defensive and dismissive like they think their crap don't stink... Truth is we all have a little homer in us and to be defensive is a normal reaction... To be an a**hole abt it though like some of yas? I think that's Boston through and through

:-)

Good season fellas enjoy your victory!!
