Patriots could be in trouble all over again... (2 Viewers)

The details of the initial reception of tapes/notes, the punishment, and the destruction of the material are still pretty sketchy.

Wait, did Goodell just say that the Patriots "misinterpreted the rules"???
Yes, followed up by he's "never believed" Bill Belichick's stance on that issue. Little bit of a light slap in the face there. Thanks, commish. This guy's getting it from all angles right now.

This outcome was expected.

Kraft family has already paid off Matt Walsh.

Walsh meets with Goodell and Goodell says no new "competitive" violations.

Matt Walsh flies out to the Bahamas this evening where his new home, and offshore bank account await him, compliments of the Kraft family.

Direct quote from Goodell:

"Teams take the necessary precautions to guard against that because stealing signals is permissible."

Goodell is really downplaying this whole thing.

I was thinking the same thing. What a coup if the Pats actually got this guy to come out of the wood work supposedly with an ax to grind only to have him basically back their story. That would be beautiful. Probably would only cost low 7 figures. Couple mill to make it all go away?

Not crying, hardly. I'm actually laughing. Since February, the Pats have lost the Superbowl, and thei public image will never be the same again. Hilarious.

It definitely sounds like the Patriots influenced him. I'm guessing that they told him that they wouldn't take any legal actions against him and gave him a lofty sum. Then they told him to turn over the tapes that weren't damaging, go talk to Goodell, but don't tell him anything he doesn't already know.

I'm sure that Belichick is losing sleep over it.Enjoy the 2008 season. I know I will.

Too bad the Cowboys couldnt have "paid off" those refs in that New England game while they were getting their backsides handed to them from a team that wasnt allowed to tape them that caused you to disappear for 8 months. Get over it.

These tapes definitely seem edited.

To all the AV guys out there, how possible is it to edit/decipher this stuff at halftime (15:00mins)?? Seems like it would be a lot of work.
Actually, feeding this through a computer it is VERY easy to line this up and merge the shots. Technology is a wonderful thing.
Then you'd theoretically have to watch it and decipher it. While a game is going on.
That is an entirely different story :goodposting: To be honest, though... if this data is being fed live into a shared system, these films could be merged within minutes of the filming, then they could have staff deciphering the film DURIGN the first half, and present it to the coaches during half time for use during the second half. Especially with a guy with a photographic memory, and a statistical genius evaluating the data. Honestly, if that's what they were doing (and I really do believe they were) it is brilliant - but illegal.

Still, I don't doubt every other team in the league would try it if they had the personnel in place to make it worthwhile.
Seems like a HUGE stretch. Have you seen the video? It's shaky handycam type stuff. I highly doubt that was live digital video fed into a system. To say nothing of "photographic memories" and the like.
I don't believe the live feed was happening. But I do believe they fed the data into a computer and had Adams evaluate it. He does have a photographic memory, and is an incredible statistician. Whether that happened in game or not is debatable. But it really does not take as much as some here think it would to create a definite advantage with the data on the film. More than a novice would be able to do, but we aren't talking about novices. These guys have film breakdowns already in place, tendencies mapped, and all they need to do is evaluate in game decisions and plays in view of previously collected data.Funny thing is, none of that has anything to do with stealing signals at all.

This stuff looks like it was done with a handheld video recorder. It doesn't look like a digital feed at all.
Just a quick note on this - there are TONS of handheld DIGITAL video recorders, you can buy them at any store. I'm not sure what the quality of the video has to do with whether it's analog or digital. That has nothing to do with the quality.

Walsh negotiated with the league that the Pats would not be able to take any legal action against him. Which I think is the perfect cover to make his testimony seem legit!?!?!

According to Walsh, it's not debatable at all. He said that he was in possession of the tape during the entire game and turned the tapes in afterwards. As for those end zone tapes showing the plays? TOTALLY legal. Lots of teams do this.

So the Kraft family opens their wallet and spends millions of dollars to keep a guy who had nothing on them quiet? And you think that is logical? Good detective work there Columbo.

So Matt Walsh was a scout for the Pats during the Rams' walk-through.
He was there legally, in Patriots gear, and was never asked to leave by anyone.Non-story.
Some of these guys are waiting for their hero Arlen to come to the rescue and have the last word. Close to being over. But you know there will be other thoughts on the subject. We've weathered the worst of it. But the 'eye' of the storm is only just about to hit. If we didnt live in a strong house, I might be worried. As it stands, based on the information we've heard and seen, we'll probably only be bothered a little more.

This will always be a black cloud over the Patriot's organization no matter how much you try to convince yourself it is not. If your so-called "victory" today helps you erase the sting of the SuperBowl loss, so be it. I enjoyed the outcome of the Superbowl very much. Justice prevailed on the gridiron, not with the league office in this case.

I only caught part of Goodell's Q&A session, but it's good to see questions asked and answered and good to see at least some of the films involved coming out in public. Is a transcript available yet? Thanks.

It doesn't?? :penalty:
Not really. In the context of it being a handheld video recorder, the "quality" is dependent on the film tech. Whether it's analog or digital is not going to make a difference. Plus, from looking at the film, you wouldn't be able to discern whether it was digital or analog.

By 'black cloud' you mean the voices of people like yourself, then youre right. It'll never go away. And Im pretty sure everyone involved will learn to live with that Himalayan-sized concern.

No surprise, but it looks like the Boston Herald really screwed up on their original story. Walsh may have been at the walkthrough, but wasn't taping it.
The Herald's story will be that Walsh was not the one behind the Rams walktrhough and they have another mystery, unnamed source that has possession of the walk through tape.

Tomase is a pretty good reporter, he attributed the claim to an unnamed source.I wouldn't be surprised if Walsh was the source or if Walsh claimed/lead the reporter to believe that there was a tape.

Walsh doesn't come out of this looking like much of a standup guy.

He obviously had his differences with the Pats organization, had an axe to grind, and was looking for the media attention on this whole thing. Letting Tomase write/believe something that would further damage NE wouldn't bother Walsh at all.

I, along with most on this board, can clearly see that Goodell is only attempting damage control and intends not to punish the Patriots further regardless of what else is revealed. Goodell clearly stumbled when he offered no direct answer as to whether he knew this taping went back to 2000 when he levied the initial punishment. Nevertheless, sports fans know the Patriots didn't win all of their games straight-up and that stigma will surround the organization from here on out.

can I join this cool little club, too? I'll play nice. promise.

Wow. I've had all of this earth-shattering revelation I can stand.

I'm switching channels. I think Geraldo is opening a vault on another channel.

I just hope the Kraft family hasn't tampered with it too!

Can someone let me know when they show the grassy noll footage Walsh has been hanging onto for the last 40+ years.

When do we start discussing the merits of cloth diapers vs. disposables?

Three things that have become apparent in the past few hours:1.) John Tomase had better start looking for a new job.

2.) The Patriots legacy isn't tainted.

3.) Posters like phthalatemagic, bigsteelthrill, jonessed and the fanatic are gonna have to come up with some new schtick.

I think Goodells press conference speaks for itself. For better and worse. No real surprises today. Some people did "want" more punishment, but they were mistaken thinking more might come of this.

The previous penalties and the whole episode carrying on for 9 months and into the foreseeable future is plenty of punishment for the cheating performed.

18-1 makes all this moot. So much arguement over the second best team in football last year. They havent won for years... much ado about nothing.

:goodposting:
