Pats/49ers 1st Round Draft pick trade(s)... (1 Viewer)

We all know how the 49ers trade away their 2008 1st round pick to the Patriots, and it will end up being a very good pick.

With that in mind...

Today I was reading an article on Yahoo Sports on Jerry Rice discussing Randy Moss and the TD record, and buried in the article was this little nugget...

Rice went 16th to San Francisco with a choice the Patriots gave the 49ers in exchange for a pick in the first round, center Trevor Matich, and one each in the second and third.
So Jerry Rice was drafted with the 1st rounder that the Patriots traded to them.link

I rememeber when the 49ers traded up to get Rice. Rice was not a hall of famer right off the bat. He dropped a lot of balls at first. But his work ethic turned him into the great player he became. Like they always say. Its tough to measure heart and desire on draft day.

The patriots also helped build the dallas team of the 90's by giving the Cowboys a bunch of picks for a bunch of mediocre players. The pats were a pretty terrible organization prior to Kraft buying the team. Chuck Fairbanks assembled a lot of talent for a brief time in the 70's and they made a good (lucky) run to the '86 superbowl but most of the pre Kraft years were miserable.

The patriots had another big trade with the 49ers in the early 70's when they traded Jim Plunkett for draft choices. They got hall of fame corner and rookie of the year Mike haynes and pro bowl safety Tim Fox with those picks and they totally turned around the patriots in 1976. Plunkett was beat up at that point and eventually released by the 49ers before being picked up by the Raiders.

I loved those 70's teams with Ray Claybory Fox, and Haynes back there. It's an interesting little nugget, and I can almost guarantee the Pats trade that pick this year for 2 #1's. It's just their nature. They may take McFadden, but that's really the only play I perceive with the value they would want that high, at that salary.

What did the 9ers get in return? For next year's pick......

It's amazing that teams deal with the Patriots...... (especially the Randy Moss trade). If you are dealing with the Patriots....you're probably getting screwed and the Pats are probably getting the better part of the deal.

The 49ers traded their 2008 first round pick to move up in the first round of the 2007 draft. With that pick, the 49ers chose Joe Staley.

the 28th pick in last years draft. OT I think.

If the Pats get Darren McFadden they could potentially break the team records that they're setting this year.

Do you remember the specifics of this? I remember that at one point the Cowboys used the Patriots as a go between to trade one or more of the players they got from Minnesota in the Herschel Walker fleecing...er...I mean trade to Tampa Bay. The Walker trade include restrictions that said the Cowboys couldn't trade any of the players they got back into Minnesota's division (which at the time was the NFC Central). So they traded a player or two to New England who then traded them to Tampa Bay. For New England's trouble they got a slight improvement in draft picks (i.e. gave a 5th to Dallas, got a 4th from Tampa or something similar).Am I remembering this correctly? Did I dream this?

Right, but to be fair, the Pats had Irving Fryar and Stanley Morgan and didn't need a WR in the draft. In hindsight the trade was pretty bad, but at the time, not so awful.

As well run as the Pats are now they were a mess for a good portion of the pre-Kraft years. Another bad deal was dealing the #3 pick to Seattle for the #8 and #10 pick in 1990. The deal as far as draft positions are concerned isn't a bad deal. It becomes a horrible deal when it turned out to be Cortez Kennedy for Chris Singleton and Ray Agnew. Kennedy turned out to be a big time player while Singleton never looked comfortable in the pros (i.e he was bad) and Agnew was mediocre at best (and that's being kind).

The deal with the Cowboys was the one where they got Russell Maryland with the #1 overall pick in 1991. Maryland never lived up to being the top selection but he still had a solid career and was a contributor to their Super Bowl run. As for the Pats they ended up with an empty wallet. They got the #11 pick (Pat Harlow who was actually pretty good for awhile but got destroyed with injuries), the Cowboys second rounder (Jerome Hendersom who was nothing more than a reserve/special teamer) and a package of players that were all stiffs with the Pats (Ron, Francis, David Howard and Eugene Lockhart).

Take those two deals and you get a very good idea why the Pats were so bad pre-Tuna. They basically turned a #1 and #3 overall into a whole lotta nothing.

:goodposting: I was pretty sure the "bunch of picks" thing was a big overstatement. Now, if we're talking about the Minnesota Vikings...
