LSU and Patriot Player Marquise Hill missing in Lake Pontchartrain

Dave Cohen Reporting

Former LSU Tiger and current New England Patriot football player Marquise Hill is missing in Lake Pontchartrain.

"I have hope. He's a strong kid," Hill's Agent Albert Elias told WWL First News. He says people should not assume the worst and asks that they assist in the search for the 6 foot 6 inch, 300 pound athlete. "If we could get people out there to look for him... he can swim."

The Coast Guard early this morning added an aircraft to the search for Hill on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain.

"We are conducting a first light search with an HH65 rescue helicopter from Air Station New Orleans as well as a small rescue boat," Coast Guard Petty Officer Thomas Atkinson told WWL First News.

He says Hill and woman fell off a jet ski last night near the Seabrook Bridge. "A good Samaritan on the bank heard yells for help," Atkinson says, "They found a woman clinging onto a piling near the shore."

The woman told the boaters that Hill had been with her. "As soon as they spotted him, they attempted to maneuver their boat into position to pick him up and lost sight of him." Atkinson says. Hill disappeared in the darkness around 9:00pm.

The Coast Guard used boats in the water and people on land to try and find Hill, but could not locate him Sunday night. Atkinson says neither Hill nor the woman were wearing a life jacket.

oh man I hope he's alright. Went to the same high school and played on the football team together.

That's a long time to be in the water, I don't care what kind of shape you're in. Was he wearing a life jacket?

Was he wearing a life jacket?
Apparently not. Although the fact that he was talking to the woman while they were floating after the accident is a good sign. He wasn't knocked out when thrown.Link
he Coast Guard was using both boats and a helicopter to search the shoreline, Atkeson said. Wildlife & Fisheries was using a recovery line that drags the bottom of the water.

A call came in around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Atkeson said. The woman, whose identity was not available Monday morning, was rescued and sent to Tulane Medical Center where she told them Hill had tried to keep her calm even as the two were drifting away from each other.

Neither Hill nor the woman wore a life preserver, Atkeson said.

Recent News: Presumed Drowned

After searching overnight for Marquise Hill, a defensive tackle in the NFL since 2004, the Coast Guard said at about 10:45 a.m. Monday that they were no longer on a search and rescue mission.

Hill is presumed drowned, and the mission is now one of search and recovery.

The 24-year-old Hill, a native of New Orleans, and a young woman were both operating jet skis on Lake Pontchartrain yesterday when they fell off into a strong current, according to Elias.

US Coast Guard officials involved in the search said they received a call at about 9:30 p.m. last night reporting screams for help on the lake. People on a boat heard the woman's screams and found her floating on a pylon. After talking with her, they learned that Hill was still in the water.

"They spotted him and then lost sight of him while trying to position the boat,"said Petty Office Third Class Tom Atkeson of Coast Guard.

The woman was taken to Tulane Medical Center, while Coast Guard rescue boat and helicopter crews searched Lake Pontchartrain near an industrial canal throughout the night and today.

"They're still searching and we will continue searching until we find Mr. Hill," Atkeson said.

"I spoke with the girl and her mother this morning and they said he helped her stay calm. He ended up saving her life, keeping her calm until she could grab onto a buoy," said Elias said, who added that Hill can swim, but was not wearing a life preserver.

Elias said Hill's mother told him that others have been missing in Lake Pontchartrain for as long as two days before being found alive, so the family was holding out hope that Hill was OK.

12:00 news reporting that he is still missing and was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident. The woman with him was wearing a life vest and was recovered.

Coast Guuard has helicopters and dogs searching the area. Mission has turned from rescue to recovery......

Thoghts and prayers are with his family!

My thoughts and prayers to him and his family. Driving a jet ski towards dark and no life-jacket is a very unwise combination.

Life vest down? Riding Jet Ski during daylight down? :lmao:
Living near several lakes I can tell ya that city people have no clue about any type of water safety. What's common to some just never enters their mind. Not quite sure where he grew up though. David thanks for the news. My prayers for Hill and his family.

My pops just called and said this is eerily similar to when KC RB Joe Delaney drowned while saving three kids in a LA lake in 1983.

Sounds like if Hill did indeed pass, he did it helping his fellow man.

Things are looking bleak here. The fact that the rescue team saw him in the distance, but then lost sight of him, due to darkness has got to be frustratingly difficult for those involved in the search.

:bye: I was thinking the same thing. So close and yet so far.

 :hot: Joe Delaney

Just for clarification's sake, only one of the boys survived. The other two drowned with Joe as he attempted to save them (Delaney couldn't swim) while hundreds of others watched idly. Tremendous heart and tremendous player (top 10 RB/Pro Bowler in his rookie season).

Body of LSU standout recovered from Lake Pontchartrain

Authorities pulled the body of Marquis Hill, a former LSU football standout and New England Patriot, from Lake Ponchartrain this afternoon, after he fell off a jet ski Sunday night.

Hill's body was recovered around 2:15 p.m. He was taken by authorities to the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office.

Capt. Brian Clark of the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said Hill was found by a drag net several hundred yards west of the Industrial Canal. Hill was not wearing a life vest.

New England teammate Randall Gay of Baton Rouge was at the scene when authorities found Hill. Gay also played with Hill at LSU.

Gay said practice resumes Thursday for the Patriots.

"I know it's going to be hard in that locker room seeing his locker,'' he said.

Around 10 a.m. today, Steve McManus of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said officials decided to focus on recovering Hill's body after witnesses saw him go under the water without resurfacing. Authorities were using information from family members to determine Hill's exact location at the time he and a woman fell from the craft, McManus said.

The accident was reported about 9 p.m. Sunday after a man and woman were reported falling into the water from a recreational craft. They apparently were heading to the Seabrook boat launch. The Orleans Levee Board Police said that a passing boat had briefly picked up the man, but he jumped back in the water to look for the woman.

The woman, who was rescued after a passerby heard someone calling for help, had apparently grabbed onto a piling or other structure in the lake.

Hill, a New Orleans native who graduated from De La Salle High School, has played in the NFL since 2004 and was a member of LSU's national championship-winning 2003 Tigers.

Sad event but hopefully the Pats take this opportunity to stress water safety. I can't tell you how common this is, man we see it everyday on the water.

RIP Marquise

He was helping building houses for families after Katrina in his spare time.

One of the greatest live sports moments I've ever witnessed was his sack of Jason White in the National Championship to lock up the game for LSU.

:(

I learned long ago never do water sports without a vest.

What a shame, could have been prevented.

He came into the league with some bipolar/mental issues. Perhaps theres more to this story than it seems.

Not seeing this reported anywhere else. I think someone misheard something.

Awful news. Condolences to his family and friends.

Hopefully we won't see this spun into a football story (i.e. the Pats have something to play for).

Did he help the woman to the piling? I haven't read that in an article but in text of posts.

I'm a lil confused. If they fell off a jet ski, why not hold onto the jet ski?
They're built to stop going once the person falls off and the handles go back down to the base. It's a good few seconds and can be a little bit aways by the time it truly stops.I've read that he did know how to swim. This doesn't mean he knew how to tread for a long time in cold water without panicking(sp?). There's some mordbid type stat that panicking affects your breathing+heart rate so much that you're several times more likely to drown if you panic.

Life vests should be automatic, especially when you're out on the water at night. :lmao:

He chose to not wear a life jacket, and he died from that choice. Sad ...... but again, his choice, we can all live from it by just having a bit of common sense.

Get off your high horse. We've all made mistakes...sorta like how you double posted just now.

What's sad is your lack of heart. :banned: Sorry to see you go Marquise. My prayers go out to the family. :banned:

Yessir, I've made some dumb mistake, I made choices just like Hill did.

I almost drowned in 1995, a bit different circumstances but I was all but drowned and the only other boat on the river saved my life and that of my brother in law.

I chose that day to do what I did.

I was on the lake all day today, the most crowded I've ever seen a lake. We boated safely, and everyone I saw/noticed was boating safely too, but I'm sure a few dummies were on the water.

What can I say ? its absolutely 100% well known knowledge to wear a life jacket when wearing a jetski, isn't it ? Not unlike wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle. Choose not to wear one ? Well, you can quickly become the poster child of "Wear a Life Jacket or Die' campaign

Through being big-headed, feeling bulletproof, alcohol, just plain being stupid or a myriad of other things, people choose to do stupid things in life, thats for certain.

Yes, its sad his life is over because of a dumb choice, maybe others will live because they'll wear a life jacket remembering what happened to HIll ?
