Pats/Moss close to deal (1 Viewer)

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Patriots are close to re-signing free agent Randy Moss.

Schefter says the Patriots have a "standing multi-year offer to make Moss one of the highest paid receivers in the NFL." Moss is perhaps realizing the market for him isn't as strong as believed, although we wouldn't count out another team like the Rams, Redskins, or Eagles making a last minute run at him.

I've been hearing all day long on sports radio (driving 8 hours in various states) that the opposite is true. That Moss is starting to get calls from other teams, hear how high his value is and that the longer it takes for NE to get him signed the worse it is for NE.

My favorite rumor so far is Green Bay. Imagine the possibilities. Get the fullback and TE off the field. Put Grant in a single-back set, with Favre chucking it to Moss, Driver, Jennings and Jones out wide. :hifive: Shades of the 90's run 'n shoot Lions, Falcons and Oilers squads.

Just saw Clayton on SportsCenter and he was saying something about Moss & Culpepper are considering signing with the same team

SportsCenter is airing live right now, and they still are running Clayton talking about the Moss/Culpepper reunion. I'm not sure where Schefter got his information, but it's not looking great right now.

Schefter's saying the Pats and Moss are close, and Clayton is running a sensationalist story, saying that Moss and Culpepper want to pair up, and you think its Schefter that's not looking great? :( Sounds to me like Randy made a phone call to Dante, and ESPN is running wild with speculation about it. Then again, maybe Moss is actually willing to destroy his own value. Maybe New England's been making plays for a backup QB that I wasn't aware of?

My "not looking great" comment has nothing to do with the Moss/Culpepper speculation, but rather it's been almost 5 hours since Schefter first reported this, and we've heard nothing else about it. That's all.

I am not trying to be a jerk here. I have no idea how this is going to wind up. Just going to ask a question: If Moss and NE are close to finalizing a deal, but simply ironing out final items, who would we be hearing from? My best guess would be no one give that NE never talks, Moss's agent is saying "No comment" and Moss has said nothing publicly.

I s'pose, but isn't it curious that Schefter is the only "information man" who is on top of this?I love the guy, but is he really that much more dialed in than the others?

I am not sure. We will see shortly. However, IMO, ESPN has undergone a shift in recent years. They are more interested in manufacturing news than reporting news. NFL network is less interested in rumor mongering and more interested in promoting its product- the NFL.

Schefter is pretty much the league's mouthpiece when it comes to reporting player movement. He's as wired in as anybody. That said, he said that the Pats and Moss were close to a deal LAST weekend too so who knows?

Has anyone else noticed that there are basically 3 "manufactured" storylines?

1. Moss to Cowboys

2. Moss to Packers

3. Moss & Culpepper

It is starting to look like Moss's agents is really working the media machine starving for a story here.

Moss should give his agent a raise.

I think that's the idea behind the stories (agent is paid on a percentage)

What teams could Moss & Culpepper go to and Culpepper would start?Jets,Baltimore,KC,Washington,Chicago,Carolina,Atlanta,TB and SF.9 maybe 10 teams. What teams does everyone think would want too take on the both of them? What teams would pay out the coin?ANSWER these questions and maybe this happens.I don't think Moss wants to leave NE, He just wants His money.

Starting to sound like Moss really wants to stay with the Pats, but his agent is trying to drive up his market value.

Moss is limiting his options bigtime if he wants

to go somewhere in a tandem situation with Culpepper.

Cpep is done, he is merely an above average backup at this point of his career.

MOSS DEAL DONE?

We're picking up preliminary, uncorroborated rumors that receiver Randy Moss has agreed to terms with the Patriots.

Again, this is preliminary. And uncorroborated.

But it's what we're hearing from one of our sources. Stay tuned.

Perhaps the news of Ben Roethlisberger's jaw-dropping deal prompted the Pats to sweeten the pot with Moss having to track down a better offer elsewhere.

Their "source" is probably this board.

Scott Zolak was on the radio this morning saying this was basically a done deal and that it would be announced today FWIW.

I would imagine that the delay in a Moss deal has prevented the Pats from seriously persuing deals with other free agents (Haggans, Law, etc...)

It wouldn't shock me to start seeing a few other signings trickle in from Foxborough once Moss is wrapped up. The Pats have a bunch of cap room still and some obvious holes that need to be addressed.

Well, seeing how Law is still under contract to KC and by rule no team can talk to him until he gets released, I doubt that the Moss signing is bogging that down at all.I think they may make a run at Haggans, and I would suspect that if they were the best offer that he could wait a couple of days as there are plenty of teams with boatloats of money to blow and it won't all be gone in 48 hours.

Both true but my point is that the Patriots haven't even bothered having FAs fly into town, presumably because they knew that Moss was the top priority and they needed closure on him one way or another before they started going for the "hard close" on other guys, like Haggans for example.I think Law comes back the Pats. He'd be a nice stopgap for a season to replace Asante in the short term.

IMO, NE probably was not interested in the guys that have been signed to big deals anyway, and I think overall they were making an effort to keep the guys thay had over exploring the entire free agent market. I don't see many big name guys that would appeal to them anyway, so I think if they are going to make a move it may have to be by trade. (Although I think Haggans and Law may end up as Pats.)
