Wait, I may have to change my mind after reading that it was co-wrote by the guy who voiced the cat on Sabrina the Teenage Witch!

Whiplash did $13 million in box office.

Paul Blart 1 did $146 million.

This one will probably do $100+ million.

I actually saw Paul Blart 1 in the theater. I don't think I've ever seen a more cringe worthy POS in my life.

Hmmm. This complaint coming from the guy that doesn't seem to pay for any of his movies and exercise his vote with his dollar. ;)

Seriously though, we could do that exercise all day and with every year's box office $$. We know this is the case. The money is made on teens and families. How much do the Transformers make? Grown Ups 2? PG-13 comedies and action movies are where the big bucks are, I would guess followed by a good animated/Disney movie.

So many factors go into it, but safe and familiar is usually going to win out in the theaters. Stuff like Nightcrawler and Whiplash is just not what 90% of the public wants to watch. We are used to interacting with other movie lovers on the boards here, so I think we get a skewed idea of what is popular. I get it it - I am a lot less willing to take a risk with a movie if I am going with a few people/family. Last time our family of 3 went we dropped close to $50. I get why people would go to the sequels, remakes, and other stuff we generally look down on because you know exactly what you are going to get. I know when I do that, chances are I am not going hate the movie and be pissed that I dropped that much money for 2hours.

Also, I would be interested in stats on income/education when we are talking about what is killing at the box office. I would bet that as those two factors increase, so do the quality of the home theater setups, and the desire to go out to the movies decrease. Therefore the people that might be more likely to choose "better" movies that I am guessing we would rather see dominate the box office are staying at home and watching them when they come out on bluray.

ETA: Nolan makes smart blockbusters and is rewarded for it. Edge of Tomorrow was a dud here but did well worldwide. Bourne movies do well, new Bond movies, Marvel movies etc. While not many on that list are original movies, there is a market for well made blockbusters.

I paid to see Whiplash at the theater. I'm just very selective where my money goes.

What were you expecting?
Exactly that actually. I went because my wife liked King Of Queens
I saw it on cable a couple years after it was released.

It actually exceeded my very low expectations.
And yet you couldn't handle Santa Claus and the Ice Cream Bunny.
