Pedroia on somebodies All-time All-Star Bosox team (1 Viewer)

Tom Servo

Nittany Beavers
In the latest issue of Baseball Digest, somebody wrote in with his All-time All-Star team for the Red Sox. He submitted:

C: Calton Fisk

1b: Jimmie Foxx

2b: Dustin Pedroia

SS: Johnny Pesky

3B: Wade Boggs

OF: Ted Williams, Carl Yastremski, Manny Ramirez

DH: David Ortiz

SP: Cy Young, Pedro Martinez, Josh Beckett, Luis Tiant and Curt Schilling

RP: Oil Can Boyd, Derek Lowe, Tim Wakefield, Dennis Eckersley, Tom Gordon, & Johnathan Papelbon

I can see everybody on this list except for Pedroia? Seriously? In 108 years of Red Sox baseball, there isn't any other representative for this team? Granted, DP's a talent guy, but he's only been in the league for a little over a year. What about Jerry Remy, Marty Barrett, Bobby Doerr or even Jody Reed (j/k on that last one)?

Doerr's a no brainer pick but I think Pedroia could be argued over Remy and Barrett. Pete Runnels is probably the #2 2B though.

It's hard to complain about Williams, Yaz and Manny but Tris Speaker is among the most underrated of the all-time greats.

Eckersley was exclusively a SP in his good Red Sox years. His return visit at the end of his career wasn't very special. I'd add **** Radatz and Bob Stanley in place of Eck and Oil Can.

Did Oil Can even pitch out of the Pen other than as a demotion? As much as it hurts Boston fans to admit, I think Roger Clemons would have to replace Josh Beckett as part of the starting 5. Beckett has had one bad year, one great year and one mediocre year for the Sox.

Didn't realize this thread was 2 1/2 years old at first but Pedroia still has a long way to go to overtake Doerr.
Agreed. But picking him has become less ballsy/crazy than it was two years ago.
If you look at their cumulative stats through age 26, Pedroia is well behind Doerr in all counting categoris but even in OPS+. Doerr lost his age 27 season due to WWII and retired at 33 because of back problems. Still, Pedroia will have to play 2B in Boston into his late 30s in order to equal Doerr's numbers.

Not a fan of Pesky. It seems like he gets rewarded for being Ted Williams' buddy. Cronin spent 7 seasons with the Senators, but still put in 10-ish with the Red Sox. Pesky missed some time due to WWII and ended up with 7 full seasons with Boston. I think Cronin is a far better pick at SS. Hell, Cronin is in the HOF. This seems like a weird pick to me.

Garciaparra deserves consideration as well. Out of Cronin's 10+ Boston campaigns, he only appeared in more than 100 games six times. This is identical to Nomar who had six full time seasons plus three partials.
