Pena gets 3 years, $24-million The Rays have agreed to a three-year deal with team MVP Carlos Pena for more than $24-million, the Times has learned. An announcement is expected later today.
Not a bad deal at all

They also gave Scott Kazpella 3.5 million this morning, to avoid arbitration and hopefully build some goodwill.

Good signing. If he continues to produce like 2007, Pena can still get one more big contract before he retires. But if he regresses to the mean, the Rays (what a stupid team name) aren't breaking the bank.

They're looking to ink Shields long term because he is willing to talk about it while Kaz seems to be thinking about other places once he's eligible. Maybe he should pitch in Amsterdam....

The Red Sox could use someone like him . . . oh wait, they already had him. I've liked him since he came up (drafted him on several dynasty teams). Not sure why the Sox just let him go (obviously they didn't have a starting spot for him, but they would have had more options to keep/trade players if they kept him).

Texas, Oakland, Detroit, New York and Boston all had him at one point. He showed no power and got on base at a pretty terrible clip in nearly 2000 AB's.He only signed a minor league deal with the Rays. Even they had no idea what they were getting. I imagine he signed with them because he felt he had a much better chance at starting at some point, whereas with the Sox he would have had to supplant Lowell and/or Youkilis.

If Greg Norton doesn't injure his knee in the last week of Spring Training, Pena may have never happened. Pena had been released from camp and the next day, Norton got hurt and was out 6 weeks. Pena got the spot because the Rays needed a LH bat off the bench and he was the only one left.
