Pet Insurance, anyone have this? (1 Viewer)

I keep getting emails for pet insurance. Wondering if it's worth it, or if it's a scam.

Does anyone have it and if so, your opinions? What company?

We do. Ours is through Met Life. We got it for our new puppy we got right after our last dog died. We're giving it a try. In hindsight, the policy we have now would have saved us a couple grand if we'd had it with our old pup. Remains to be seen if it's worth it for a new pup. At $25 a month, I thought it was worth the try. Shocking to me, most people around us have it. I didn't even know it existed until we got in the middle of our issues with our last dog and neighbors were talking about it.

We inherited my wife's grandfather dog. She was 12 when we got her so we did it through our local pet hospital. She gets 2 checkups a year plus dental clean free. Any sick visits are included, immunizations And her worm, flea tick also included. Other medicine is out of pocket. We've been lucky so far that everything has been included with our visits. They gave us a breakdown that we would have paid like 2500 last year instead of the 800 but I don't really know

Was the $800 the deductable for all those visits or was that the premiums you paid for the insurance and the vet bills would have been $2500? Just trying to get a true picture regarding total out lay vs the other costs.

Based on the other example above about $25 month ($300/yr). Barring something unexpected how much do you spend on a pet a year with respect to Vet bills? I don't think we spend hardly anything on our cat. Maybe one visit a year....maybe. So for a young pet at $300 per year and assuming they don't have complications you could save $3K over ten years. Maybe this insurance is something you start doing when your pet gets to be 10+ years when there is a better chance of complications of something.

Just trying to do the math.

The emails through my work are for MetLife. Policies from $18/mo to $28/mo. The $28/mo policy covers 80% reimbursement up to $5k yearly. My dog is 3 and no real problems.... yet.

So I pay something like 65 a month for whatever plan I'm on.

So I don't know if it's true insurance like third party, since it's through the hospital. So maybe I'm more on a medical plan. But yes I pay ~800 a year. If I didn't have a plan and did the same exact thing it would have been 2500ish...

We only been doing it for a year and a half so I don't know if it's really worth it if that helps

Yeah...ours is something like that. They have other policies out there that cover regular doc visits etc, but those get up in the 30-40 dollar range....didn't see the point in that. Our vet office visits aren't all that expensive. We just need for emergencies/surgery etc.

We don't. And probably never will.

If my dog ends up getting cancer or some vet bill that's north of 2K we just might have to make a tough decision. But over the years we just pay for our normal visits and such - probably don't spend more than $300 a year on that.

We don't, but I've considered it. We have a 3 year old GSP who gets seizures every month. The vet has looked her over and watched a couple videos I've taken during those times, but nothing conclusive as to the cause or treatment. I only started considering pet insurance when the vet recommended doing brain scans and other similar treatments to identify the root cause and remedy. What's been recommended is very pricey and hard for me to wrap my head around for such a young pup.

Before kids, my wife and I had two dogs. We didn't have any pet insurance. Both dogs required costly surgeries and vet visits later in their lives.

About five years ago, we got a puppy, so we got pet insurance through Trupanion. I researched companies beforehand and they seemed pretty reputable. It's $50/month. We have a dachshund, a breed that can have back problems as they get older. We haven't really had any issues that the insurance covered, except for some wellness visits (I think). Each time we visit the vet, the vet office automatically sends a claim electronically to our insurance, and I get an email about whether any of the costs were covered (sometimes the cost is applied to the deductible), which is helpful (the vet charges an annual fee for the service). The dog is not even 5 years old yet, so (thankfully) we haven't had any costly issues. The insurance is more for down the road.

I know you are playing roulette but since most pets don't need things until later in life is there anything that makes waiting until the are X years old (depending on breed/animal when most things start to go south) to then get it? Basically do premiums go up with age etc like most other insurance situations?

Well, when you need the insurance, it'll be too late to buy it. I'm sure the premiums would have gone up the later we waited, even if the dog was totally healthy. Basically, we could afford it, so we got it.

We did have an incident in December where my daughter had a cold and was trying to get the Dayquil packet open, and a gelcap flew out and onto the floor, and the dog ate it. Fortunately, it didn't harm the dog, but we took him to the vet and it cost like $800 for them to do all the stuff they had to do. Insurance covered the visit, but there was a $1000 deductible, so we still had to pay everything.

well worth the money IMO. i mean, it’s a part of your family and it’s called insurance for a reason. you can try to self insure and put money away for a rainy day but realistically, no one does this. i used nationwide thru my job and got a small discount. cost me around $500 yr and that was with a $250 deductible, but meds were covered. after deductible i think i got 90%. the sooner the better because they like to call many things pre existing. that one time your dog is puking and you don’t know what to do and need to go somewhere at 2a, you’ll thank yourself. i mean, i’d pay whatever for a family member, but knowing i get back money makes it a bit easier.
