Peyton Manning - offensive coordinator (1 Viewer)

this seems to be a big deal in sports news lately.. the idea that because Manning calls his own plays somehow that makes him a unique QB. as though it somehow makes him more intelligent, more capable, more dynamic, than other QBs.

they make it sound like 60s QBs weren't calling their own plays. Bart Starr called his own plays for chrissakes. no one is confusing him with a rocket scientist or anything.

why do talking heads want to pump up Manning as though him calling plays at the line is some amazing thing that's never been accomplished before?

 Why do posters rekindle a topic that has been discussed ad nauseum on these boards?

Well....since I missed the first several "ad naseum" discussions:

I'd say that it is a big deal because both defenseive and offensive scheming has becoming much more complex since the 60's. I've heard QB's from that era say as much (sorry no link), and think that is a fairly commonly accepted idea.

Basically, Peyton Manning does at the line of scrimmage what offensive coordinators wish they could be able to do if they could talk into the QB's ear at pre-snap. The biggest deal is that Peyton has to decifer what the defense is actually going to do (because they always disguise it nowdays) and signal to his teammates in a way that is undetectable/undeciferable by the defense. No easy task I'd say.
