PFT Rumormill: Casserly to NY Giants? (1 Viewer)

Can any Giants homers chime in on the PFT rumor that Charlie Casserly is the leading candidate for the Ginats GM job?

I find this hard to believe after the Texans performance the last 5 years and especially right after the Mario Williams fiasco.

GIANTS' SHORT-TERM FUTURE FULL OF POSSIBLE SURPRISES

Okay, we know that we promised to share the "stunning" news that we've picked up regarding the future of the Giants last night, but we were putting up other stories and doing other holiday-related stuff and wanted to have the time to sit down and focus on this one.

Anyway, here's what we've picked up, all from our network of league and industry sources.

First, former Texans and Redskins G.M. Charley Casserly is regarded as the top prospect to replace Ernie Accorsi in New York. Casserly was interviewed for the job last week.

Second, New England V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli wants the Giants G.M. job, but Bob and Jonathan Kraft (who own the Patriots) don't want to let him go -- and the Giants apparently are inclined to defer to them, which Cleveland owner Randy Lerner supposedly did a couple of years ago before Phil Savage was hired as the Browns G.M.

Third, the Patriots (as we hear it) are more inclined to let coach Bill Belichick leave than Pioli. Myra Kraft, the wife of Bob Kraft, is said to be very troubled by reports of Belichick's alleged "relationship" with a married woman in New Jersey, which information surfaced earlier this year in connection with the woman's divorce proceedings.

Fourth, the Giants aren't inclined to hire Belichick because of those same dynamics. "They don't need another P.R. nightmare," said one source. Just last week, Page Six of the New York Post disclosed that the divorce complaint has been amended by Vincent Shenocca to accuse his wife and Belichick of adultery.

Fifth, if Casserly gets the G.M. job, his first choice for head coach will be former Packers coach Mike Sherman, who was hired as an assistant with the Texans while Casserly's tenure was winding down.

Sixth, a dark horse candidate for the Giants job is Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Morningsomething. (Insert shudder here.)

Seventh, and finally, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis wants the Giants job, but realizes that it could be a dead end in the short term. He likewise doesn't want to leave the Irish so soon after his arrival two seasons ago.

So there you have it. The current talk from folks in the know. Regardless of what actually happens, it's gonna be an interesting ride for the G-men over the next couple of weeks.

As a texans fan all i have to say is :wall:

These teams care about adultery enough to let it affect hiring decisions?
I'm surprised about that as well. Bellicheck is without a doubt, one of the top, if not the top HC in the league and not to hire him because he had an affair seems a little silly.

Yeah, I'm suprised that one of the qualifications for head coach is "keeps his pee-pee out of where it shouldn't be."Besides, lots of divorce cases involve adultery allegations as a way to get leverage on the other side, not as true reporting of events.

Maybe they are a little gunshy after the whole Strahan divorce debacle this year and don't want to be on the backpage of the NY papers. It's just funny because that will quickly be forgotten when they win games.

Not to hijack the thread but are the Pats really unhappy enough with Bellicheck to let him go? I find that shocking if true.

Yeah...that's the part I find truly stunning. If he was really on the market I have to think any number of teams would be tripping over themsleves to get his services. In any case, one of the pregame shows last week (I'm guessing it wasn't CBS since Casserly works there) mentioned that he had interviewed there and was one of 5 candidates. At this point I wouldn't be surprised (and certainly hope) this is just Casserly pumping himself up with his reporter friends. If the Mora's think there'd be outrage over Bellichek's personal life, they have another thing coming if they think Giants fans would approve of this or a Sherman or a Morningwieg hire (eventhough Morninwieg has done a decent job as the Eagles OC).

Right now these rumors are a one way street. There is nothing coming out of New England on this. BB runs this franchise and has perhaps the best owner in sports letting him do so (which if you do some research about him a solid owner is as important to him as anything can be after his Browns experience). There's zero reason to believe he will not be running the show next year...or as long as Brady is playing. BB has a big eye for football history and he has a chance to further his legacy in Foxboro as Brady and much of this team is just entering their prime with a very favorable cap situation as well.BB does have some personal stuff going on as he is getting divorced, has the odd situation in NJ as well as his son getting nabbed for weed. Yet, as far as football goes there has not been a peep of unhappiness...and even if he was it would be a total surprise if anyone knew because that's not how he operates.Pioli could make some sense but he resigned last year. If he was going to bolt that decision really doesn't jive and unless there's an out clause I don't see the Pats releasing him either.

Football companies are privately held, and reflect the values of their owners and GMs. In Oakland, and to a lesser extent Denver, it's about winning at all costs. These teams often find themselves with less-than-savory characters and more than their share of dirty players. The Giants, OTOH, tend to avoid troubled backgrounds, though they do take some risks (Burress, Christian Peter, etc.) I don't see what's so amazing about passing someone over as the face of your franchise b/c he can't stay loyal to his wife.

Maybe they should be paying more attention to how Casserly, Sherman , and "Morningsomething" #@*%ed their last franchises, versus what Bellichek has been #@*%ing.
 The reason the Gianst WOULD care is because the woman he has a relationship worked for the Giants and that's where BB met her.So it could be "sticky"No way they let that effect hiring the best football coach on the planet though....Casserly? That would be horrible. If they wanted crappy leftovers they should have scooped up Herm Edwards last off season (joking!!)

Repeat after me: Casserly had nothing to do with the Williams-Bush choice. He was powerless due to a new regime in place, and his departure shortly afterward reflected that fact.

Yeah it much better to let the face of your franchise be about losing. Who needs all that winning stuff?Giants fans must be rejoicing at the prospect of having Casserly & Mornhingweg lead their team.

If you saw how PFT covered (and still refers to) Casserly's 'resignation' from Houston, I seriously doubt he considers Florio one of his "friends".

I meant the TV report, but obviously didn't make that clear since I assume PFT picked this up from them since it's basically a rehash of what has been out there in one form or another.

It has been a couple of years, but Casserly actually went on record with something or another with PFT.com. From my understanding, Casserly has been a favorite with various insiders and rumor mongers as a general manager who will talk.
