Green, Booker among nine cuts by rebuilding Dolphins

Associated Press

Updated: February 11, 2008, 4:12 PM ET

MIAMI -- Quarterback Trent Green was acquired by the Miami Dolphins last year as part of a plan to turn the franchise's fortunes around.

Not surprisingly, Bill Parcells' ideas differ from the previous model.

In the Dolphins' first major player purge since Parcells took charge of Miami's football operations, the team parted ways with Green, wide receiver Marty Booker and seven other players Monday -- ushering in the start of what's expected to be a massive offseason roster shakeup by the rebuilding franchise.

"This is never easy, especially since all of these players worked hard during their tenure here," new Dolphins' general manager Jeff Ireland said.

Other notable cuts by the Dolphins included tackle L.J. Shelton and massive defensive tackle Keith Traylor, both of whom were starters.

Miami also waived tackle Anthony Alabi, defensive tackle Anthony Bryant, tackle Marion Dukes, defensive tackle Marquay Love and tackle Joe Toledo.

Most of these moves were expected, and more will undoubtedly follow over the coming weeks as Miami looks to retool following its 1-15 season. The Dolphins haven't made the playoffs in six seasons, the longest stretch in franchise history.

Green was placed on injured reserve in October after his second severe concussion in 13 months, and the 37-year-old may contemplate retirement. Traylor suggested at times last season that his 16th season may be his last.

Booker caught 50 passes in 2007, but managed only one touchdown for the second time in his four seasons with the Dolphins. Shelton started all 32 games during his two-year stay with the Dolphins and had two years left on his contract in Miami.

"I want to thank all of them for their contributions to the Dolphins and wish them good luck," Ireland said.

Parcells has already reshaped the front office, firing general manager Randy Mueller and other members of the team's player personnel staff. The coaching staff was rebuilt, most notably with Tony Sparano brought in to replace Cam Cameron as head coach.

With the start of free agency Feb. 29, Parcells' eye has clearly turned toward the roster.

"In the case of each of the veterans, it's especially difficult to release players who have been productive and valued members of the organization," Ireland said. "However, we feel these decisions are in the best interest of the team."

ETA: It will be interesting to see where Booker ends up. Possibly back in Chicago?

I find the Booker move the most interesting. He was a vet and the most consistent WR of a pretty inconsistent group. I don't know what his contract looked like, but I am guessing Parcells will bring a vet in to compete for a starting slot with Hagan and Ginn. Just think 15 months ago they had Welker, Chamber and Booker as their top 3...

Green has been an underrated qb for a long time but now might be the best time to look at retirement. He has had 2 major concussions in his last 2 years and his health is the most important thing.

Booker would be a solid addition to any wr corps as a 2nd or 3rd wr (Engram type).

So does Miami look to draft or sign a wr or do they go with Ginn, Hagan, Camarillo?

From the Blog... Booker was a possible casualty last year.... Was it a salary thing? April 27, 2007, 01:38

Dolphins Trying To Trade WR Booker

Greg A. Bedard, Palm Beach Post - [Full Article]

The Miami Dolphins are actively trying to trade wide receiver Marty Booker, according to reports. If the team is unable to trade Booker, he might be released by the team.

At least they got a pair of late 2nd Rounders :boxing: Camarillo time

He was due around $4M, much too high for him...

Absolutely (did not even THINK it would be that high).

The interesting note here is that Booker was cut. It opens the door for Ginn and possibly Hagan. You can bet that Miami will bring in some competition though. There figure to be some decent journeyman veterans on the market this offseason and the draft is fairly deep at WR.

As for Camarillo, I would temper my expectations. I'm a Stanford homer. He didn't even start for the Cardinal and should probably be viewed as a third or fourth WR at best.

Intersting comment about Hagan - Rotoword

Fired receivers coach Terry Robiskie indicated before he was canned that immaturity is holding back Derek Hagan.

"The biggest thing is for him to get married," Robiskie said of Hagan. "Single guys don't have the focus of married guys. He's focusing on the rims of his car, on 'Am I Cingular or T-Mobile?' and other things that are so irrelevant. He's got too many focuses." Hagan has starting caliber ability, but his hands are inconsistent. He will compete for a starting job in 2008.

It's interesting because I felt that he got a "free ride" last year from scrutiny due to Ginn being drafted so high. While not a first rounder, I do believe he was an early second round pick and I know they had high expectations for him the year he was drafted.

Hagan was a mid third round pick for the Phins in 2006. He was highly regarded coming out of college but he dropped a few balls during the Senior Bowl and his stock really fell. I'm still hopeful about his future, but I guess we'll see. hopefully Parcells will knock his head into place.

Ginn is looking like a solid #3 WR next year, especially in leagues which award pts for return yardage. If Ginn begins to grab 4-5 balls per game, I wouldn't be surprised to see Lorenzo Booker handling the return game.

My Human Resources dep't would be on me like white on rice if I ever made this comment about one of my employees.Anyway, Phins fans should be excited about being rebuilt by Parcells. If was fun watching him do it in NE. Guys like Hagan and RB Booker are undervalued right now - don't miss the bus.

He dopped alot of balls this season too. very talented with unreliable hands. I wouldn't be surprise if he gets cut during the 2008 season for dropping passes.

Sad day for Dolphns fans - I can't imagine Zach playing for another team.

I'm not surprised at all. The first year Parcells took over the Cowboys one of his first moves was cutting Emmitt Smith.

"Mr. Thomas? Hi, this is Mickey Loomis - GM of the New Orleans Saints?..."

Scenario:

Zach Thomas retires

Makes speech about "moving on"

BB makes call to Zach

Thomas signs a 2 year deal with Pats

Pats lose SB to NFC East team

whats the over/under?

I wouldn't mind getting Booker back here in Chicago. He might be a cheap acquisition and I think he stated that he would like to return here. With Berrian's uncertainty, the Bears can use another verteran WR. If Berrian ends up re-signing with the bears, I'd release Muhammad. Moosh is 35 (I think) while Booker, I believe, is 31. Booker may still have a few decent years in him.

Does anyone have any concerns about Robiskie's comments about Hagan being colored by some special connection he has to Ginn through his tOSU roots? Remember that Robiskie's son played with Ginn. It's a wacky idea perhaps, but it did occur to me.

I can see Shelton being cut, but why cut Alibi and Toledo before you sign replacements? It's not like there was a huge investment in them. I'm also surprised that Traylor got cut and not traded.

Green needs to retire while his head is still attached to his body.
I dunno. If I were Green I would look into backing up a young, franchise QB somewhere and hold a clipboad for a couple years. Where else is he going to make that kind of cash outside of football?

It seems like bad hands in a WR is something that doesn't improve much.I am very high on Ginn as he looked good last year and the whole offense can only improve this year.

As I recall from when I did his preview a couple years ago after the draft, his "bad hands" started after his college career ended - he caught some absurd number of targets in college.

SAINTS MAKE OFFER TO THOMAS

It's two visits, two offers for former linebacker Zach Thomas.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the New Orleans Saints have made Thomas an offer to join the team. Earlier this week, the Patriots offered Thomas a contract.

Schefter reports that there's a feeling that the Saints are the favorites to land Thomas, who was cut by Miami last week.

Other teams interested in Thomas include the Cowboys, Broncos, Texans, Jets, and Bills.

;) Well played, sir.

The Pats tried to lowball Zach. The door is wide open for the Saints and/or Dallas to sign him.
