Phoenix (or AZ in general) (1 Viewer)

How about golf options? I know there are a ton of them. And it's peak season so I am seeing $300+ tee times at some of the top courses.

I'm not going to commit to that much, so I'm looking at closer to the mid-range of $200/person. Add some club rentals and I'll be breaking $500 for a round of golf for my son and I.

I want something that is scenic and pretty decent. Just not $300+ decent....

Ended up with a tee time at TPC Champions Course on Wednesday. There were a lot of options but my son thought going to the TPC would be cool. Stadium course was $550+ each, the Champions course (which I read was better anyway) was closer to $250.

I'm 35k feet in the air right now, getting ready to touchdown in Phoenix in a couple of hours to attend a conference at the Arizona Biltmore. Won't have time to get out much, but I will try to get in this 5-mile loop hike in before the festivities start this evening. The trailhead is within walking distance of the hotel so it will probably be a 9-mile walk/hike once it's all said and done.

Damn, that hike kicked my ***. Despite walking four miles every day, Florida has ZERO elevation so I’m not used to the climb. My dogs are barkin! And my hips, my knees, my quads. Do I really have to go to the cocktail party tonight? #groan

Just went golfing yesterday https://golfgilbert.com/
affordable. There are plenty of expensive and affordable courses

Go do camelback and get back to us.

I used to do it a lot when I lived there. My buddy would come get me at 5am in the summer, just so we could finish before the heat. There was this freaking stud who would run it, with his newborn on his back. He would do it twice. Before we finished once. Guy was unreal

Heading to Arizona Saturday-Thursday.

Staying in Prescott at the Hassayampa Inn Sunday/Monday as part of our upcoming Arizona trip. Looks like an amazing place. I love staying at historic hotels like The Brown in Louisville and Union Station in St Louis so I'm looking forward to it.

Did you ever end up going to Sedona a few years back?

Yes, loved it. We're going to go again for a day this next week. Playing a lot of our trip by ear as my wife hurt her leg so much of the hiking we had planned is probably out of the question.

Nice. Downtown Prescott is a good time. Let me know if you want some recommendations.

I think I’m staying in Prescott valley Monday night as I have court hearings in that area early next week. I’m currently typing this from Cottonwood and the weather is great.

We're up for anything that's not a bar scene - just not our style. Funny that we're staying on "Whiskey Row".

Hassayampa is great. It's a Trost & Trost hotel. They designed hotels all over the SW back in the 1930's -40's. They have a very distinctive style. The Holland Hotel in Alpine, TX and El Rancho in Gallup, NM are two more that are still in operation.

My in-laws booked a house in Scottsdale for a week. We'll meet them there.

In July. They booked this for July.
Uhhhh why?

I was going to say I'd be happy to meet up for a beer but, **** man, it's basically the surface of the sun in July. Maybe you need to head a couple hours north up the hill for a day trip and I'll happily buy you a beer.

These same people booked Disney World in August. I.....I don't have any say. I refused to go to Disney but I'm going to have to go on this one. I'm pretty sure I'll just burst into flames upon arrival and that'll be it for GM.
Two hours north... a much more tolerable 80 degrees or so, pines, and good beer.

ETA: Scottsdale is really nice and you'll still have a good time in the pool and stuff. But it's really too hot to do anything but be in a pool when the sun is out.

Yup, all of these things I'm acutely aware of. I lobbied for a different location, but it's like spitting into the ocean or yelling into the wind with them. Part of me just wants to sit back and watch them complain about the heat for a week.

We actually like to visit in the heat of summer because our daughter is a little fish and we can still swim, and you can book some really nice places at really low rates.

I'll occasionally wake up early for a quick hike or 9 holes before the heat of the day, but mostly splashing in some really nice pools for really low rates.

TPC Scottsdale is $200 in July for some reason.....my FIL/BILs want to play, but I'm just not cut out for 18 on a nice course.

I will be disc golfing, so if anybody has suggestions for 6am disc golf on the surface of the sun, I'm all ears.

I stayed here a few years ago and they still had a hand operated elevator, like had a guy had to come in and close the gate manually and operate it.

Ok… move in at ASU is 8/16/24. We are working out details and logistics, but will be in the area around then.

Happy to do a cornhole for anyone interested.

🍻
we will be out there from 8/11 - 8/18, staying Scottsdale
^^

starting to organize an eclectic cornhole (worlds colliding).

anyone interested?
I may be. Let me check my calendar.

You guys got any interest in heading a couple hrs north where the weather is way cooler? I could host something probably.

Driving out from the Bay Area, so likely not this trip. This is to move in our daughter, so we’ll be back for other excursions.

I did (most of) that drive several years ago, left Marin early enough to get to Flagstaff by 4:00 PM so I could go to a local running store before they closed and get some ideas on routes I could do the next day. Camped for free on BLM land like 10-15 minutes from town that night, hit up a couple breweries and had a great time, even if I was only there for about 18 hours before I moved on to Colorado. Would love to get back to that area.

Since then it's been Fiesta Bowls/National Championships/Final Fours out in Glendale, or client meetings in PHX and Scottsdale. Would love to get back to Flag and spend more time.

I hear it's where all the cool people live.

Well, checked my schedule. Of course, I have court down there on 8/19 ( :lmao: ) but my club championship is the weekend just before it so that may be problematic. I'll see if I'm down there earlier that week.

Things to see or do in Scottsdale next week other than try to survive? Restaurants, breweries? Weed shops? Help GM survive 7 days there please.

I’ll add more later but you’ll be fine on breweries and weed. Dispensaries should be plentiful and all fine. I think Trulieve and Sol Flower are in Scottsdale. Honestly though, and maybe I’m too novice to tell the difference, all Arizona dispensaries seem the same to me and totally find.

For breweries in that area:
OHSO
Four Peaks (original owner sold it to BevMo so it’s more commercialized but late 20s Woz practically lived here)
Pinnacle (just opened, family friendly)
Fate
Goldwater - this is in the “Old Town” area which is a really good restaurant/bar scene. Lots of good stuff there.

Things to do in Scottsdale:
Well, it’s going to be very hot. So things like hiking Camelback are probably out.
Diamondbacks games are actually a good fan experience and air conditioned
For the kids, Great Wolf Lodge is pretty awesome (and they serve booze)
Plenty of great disc golf and golf course in the area if you want to play the the crack of dawn. There is a Top Golf.

Restaurants:
Lon’s at the Hermosa Inn (finer dining but not too crazy expensive)
Salt Cellar (seafood)
Rehab Burger
Cafe Monarch (I haven’t been, but this is getting rave reviews)

But seriously you should head north to the Sedona/Cottonwood/Jerome/Flagstaff area for much better weather and I’ll buy you a beer.

Just to clarify - the OG Tempe one is open but Scottsdale’s has been gone for a while. Couple other places have tried to exist there but failed.

I also always recommend a day at the Musical Instrument Museum. Bottom floor are exhibits plus a room where you and the kids cans play with instruments like a gong, theremin, and more.

Top floor is broken up by continent/country. You wear headphones and as you approach a country, the music from that country starts playing while you read about the origins of the instruments you’re hearing.

Yeah for kids I believe the OdySea is pretty fun and if you can venture to downtown Phoenix there's the children's museum, some art places, etc. for the kids. I haven't been but my wife reports the kids enjoy these places. I believe GM has younger kids.

The Phoenix Zoo is pretty good and not massive but, yeah, heat.

I just looked at the temp for the area this week. Lolz.

Yeah I only went to the Tempe one. I lived like two blocks from there for a couple of years when I was like 27/28. Great times.

We are having fun. Floated the Salt River yesterday and that was a blast! Seeing wild horses come take a drink...awesome. And the people here are so friendly.

Enjoying the hell out of this Four Peaks Hop Knob IPA.

Treated the family (16 of us) to Cook and Craft. $520 after tip, but it was delicious. Also did brunch at Breakfast Club. Met Bobby Sac yesterday and Cold Beers and Cheeseburgers. Didn't eat but the cute waitress picked out my beers for me. Love that.

About to hit the Puttshack. I'm liking this Arizona.

Thops my ghostly white brother. I spent 2 summers too many in phx. Stay inside. Don’t turn your car off when getting gas. Go eat in tempe, enjoy ASU

Want to buy my house in Chandler? 😅

I used to play disc golf at this course off of Hayden Rd I believe, kind of between South Scottsdale and Tempe. It was basically just a bunch of baskets in a wide open field, somehow I lost a disc on a water hole there, lol. Not worth it if you are coming from a mecca like Portland.

Pretty sure I played a short course at Papago Park near ASU which had a little more to it. And a course out at Fountain Hills that wasn't bad. And another in North Scottsdale but don't remember where, this was all 15 years ago.

If you were on a work trip or guy's trip it might be fun to check one of them out but not if you have a big family with other things to do.

I mentioned a bunch of places that were popular 15-20 years ago in the other thread a few months ago, not sire where that was.

Salt Cellar, Carlsbad Tavern, US Egg, Harlow's, Roaring Fork. Probably a lot better options in 2024.

Edit: if by chance you make it to Harlow's get the chorizo and eggs for me, that was my regular order. Somewhere on the wall is a photo with about half of our home fantasy league who was in town and wearing matching shirts, four or five used to hang out in the shark pool years ago. I'm getting nostalgic now for the valley of the sun. Everyone should experience Phoenix in July at least once.

After watching a NFLX show on pizza last night, we went to Pizzeria Blanco today for lunch. I got the fennel sausage with caramelized onions. Solid but I'm not sure it was worth $26. Everybody enjoyed their pizza and the fresh Mozzarella with basil....magnificent. Had 2 Wilderness IPAs which were very good and I got the 16oz cans which had a fantastic quote from Edward Abbey printed on it:

Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread.

We extended our vacation until tomorrow as my wife's family got screwed by Delta flight cancelations. Ordering Grimaldis pizza for the last meal, which is what we had the first night a week (WEEK!) ago. I think this pizza was terrific.

Bringing home a 15 pack of Four Peaks Hop Knot home with me. Fantastic, easy drinking IPA. Crushed dozens of them this trip.

Is there an easier city to navigate around than Scottsdale? I've been raw dogging no Google Maps the last 4 days.

Nah man it's a grid system. Great driving city.

We have had a wonderful, relaxing trip. Staying at a nice resort and decided to extend it a night and do the drive back in one shot instead of 2.

ate well... will list them in a bit.
