Phrases/terms that need to be retired immediately (3 Viewers)

I will continue to place "unpack" on this list until it is rightly viewed as only being used by smug, swarmy weasels that deserve an immediate and severe beating.

In football scouting reports, everybody always possesses good size, speed, and pass-catching ability. Nobody ever simply has those traits. I can't think of a good reason for using "possesses" instead of "has" in that context, but "possesses" seems about a hundred times more common.

Monies.

At least 90% of the time I see someone use the plural, the singular would have been more apt. But if you're going to use the plural, spell it right: moneys. (It's spelled "monies" frequently enough that it's hard to consider that spelling an outright error, but it's definitely not preferred. In English, words ending in -ey are made plural by adding an s: attorneys, alleys, keys, donkeys, medleys, chimneys, etc.)

"Really?" <------------this started out fairly annoyingly and has grown into one of the most annoying sayings today.

It might only be topped by, "It is what it is."
That was my thought. Hate that phrase
I have a niece that loves that phrase. I want to strangle her every 47th time she uses it. i.e. Almost daily.
The only thing that is worse than those people who say "It is what it is" are the people that expect it to be what it is not.

Good lord

http://www.tonic.com/article/10-raised-to-...lla-big-number/

A California physics student is on a mission to give the slang modifier 'hella' some geek street cred, proposing its official use as designating the number 10 followed by 27 zeroes.
Sorry, guy.

Google gets behind 'hella' campaign
million, billion, trillion, quadrillion, quintillion, sextillion, septillion, hella, nonillion, decillion. One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong!

No, not like those. This would fall here ... think about disk sizes or flops :Kilo = 10^3Mega = 10^6Giga = 10^9 Tera = 10^12Peta = 10^15Exa = 10^18Zetta = 10^21Yotta = 10^24Hella (proposed, as this value currently has no name) = 10^27So, as far as matching the cadence and speech pattern of the others, it's not horribly out of place. I won't argue that hella isn't a hella stupid word, but I'm pretty sure I also don't care very much what they wind up calling 10^27. We're so far away from using it in terms of daily applicable nerd terms that by the time someone makes a 1 Hellabyte Hard Disk Drive, this conversation will likley well be forgotten.

I hate this thread in general but this gives me something to think about. I bet I make this mistake all the time.

Monies is the plural of Mony. For example, the lyrics to Billy Idol's song "Mony Mony" has lots of Monies in it.

I didn't read the whole thread, so I apologize if this is a repeat.

I've gotten to the point of completely skipping any post that starts with "FAIL".

Sorry if a repeat

Reach Out when referring to calling someone.

At the end of the day.. is starting to get old real quick.

Touch base.. see Reach Out

Do me a favor. That'll never die but I'm just sick of doing people &$#%%&%^& favors.

Ping.... as in "let me ping so and so to get his opinion".

I'm an IT guy who troubleshoots TCP/IP all the time, and I like submarine movies as well, but enough is enough.

Getting pretty sick of "Filthy" as used by baseball announcer guy, ex: Mario Soto's stuff is just filthy tonight.

Every sports talk radio dork uses this now.

One ping only.

I'd like to see "legacy" take a long vacation. I think I heard it applied to Lane Kiffin the other day - Lane Kiffin.
