Physics and astronomy thread (3 Viewers)

Thought I mentioned it previously...saw an old HS friend recently who is a union cameraman for tv and mostly film. Worked on Ford vs Ferrari recently. He's been doing a bunch of work for nasa lately shooting ultra hi def film of Boeing and Musk tests (both run everything they do through NASA). Showed me some screen shots he snapped...insane.

What were you seeing?  Do you even know?  Bound to secrecy?

Read an article on Al Jazeera yesterday about Congress possibly shutting down/postponing the 2024 manned moon trip...I think over NASAs delay in detailing expenses (I scanned more than read the article).

Eta...China scheduled to go in 2025, Russia in 2030.

Did anybody watch that Apple TV show about the space race? This fits right into that.

Pretty sure we already won the Space Race 50 years ago.  Still waiting for the second place finisher to cross the line.

Nasa announced yesterday that May 27 is date for scheduled launch of SpaceX Crew Dragon rocket with astronauts going to ISS.

Don't think they're letting anybody watch live other than invited press.

Although with the beaches opening, who knows

There's a KSC visitors center — may be opened back up by then.
Hope it works out...this is from one of the articles yesterday (CNN).

Because of Covid-19, however, there will be no crowds of spectators lining the beaches and viewing sites along Florida's Space Coast to watch the craft hurtle toward the ISS, as they have for the launch of nearly every crewed US mission since Alan Shepard became the first American to reach space in 1961.

Only a limited number of reporters will be allowed on site, and NASA said it will not host any members of the public.

I’ve tried to get into star gazing for a while now but never wanted to spend the money on decent equipment and I had little patience.

Decided to by myself a 6in dobsonian telescopes a few months ago.  I've had some great looks at the moon, but haven’t had a chance to see any planets and the deep space stuff seems over my head right now.

Anyways, I couldn’t sleep tonight so I checked outside and it was clear as could be.  I screwed up my red dot finder getting it set up and almost bagged the 2am expedition to the front yard.  Finally got it set and aimed it at Jupiter and HOLY #### I saw it as clear as could be.  Moons and all.  Same with Saturn.  This stuff was mind blowing.  I think I was out there for about 3 hours.   Was a little disappointed in Mars after seeing Jupiter and Saturn.

Red dust doesn't grab your interest?  Huh.

Pro tip: use a filter before pointing it at the sun.
