Pierre Thomas OUT for Week 5 and now Week 6 (1 Viewer)

New Orleans Saints tailback Pierre Thomas frustrated, but 'coming along'

New Orleans Saints tailback Pierre Thomas said the swelling keeps going down in sprained left ankle. But his impatience keeps rising as he's set to miss his third straight game. Thomas said it's "painful" to sit back and watch without being able to help out on the field.

"I'm a little frustrated, but hey, it's coming along," said Thomas, who said his ankle is "starting to look like a normal ankle again."

Thomas said the original estimate for his injury was four to six weeks, though he was confident he would come back sooner since he was able to walk around on the ankle earlier than expected.

He said he's been running full speed inside the pool, and he hopes to be able to run on solid ground next week. But he wants to make sure he doesn't risk a setback by trying to come back too soon.

"Now I'm in the process of seeing where the strength is at," Thomas said. "It's just taking too long."

Thomas all but confirming that he has a high ankle sprain. Looks like Betts and Ivory will be the guys for at least two more games and maybe more.

Who do you like better given Betts bonehead plays last week? I keep reading Ivory got outplayed by Betts but he ran at just under 4 ypc didn't have the mistakes Betts did, so why not give him more carries than Betts?

Because he's also been prone to mental mistakes. I still think the formula remains the same - the two will split rushing attempts; Betts will handle the third-down role and Ivory will get the goal-line carries should the Saints get some.

Yeah, interesting that this is the first time I've heard about this 4-6 week diagnosis. Did we miss that before? I recall Payton saying if anyone can play without practicing it's PT, so they were optimistic every week.

I actually think they don't trust either near the goal line and just keep it in Brees' hands and throw when they get in close.

I think that's a good bet. Of the two RBs, though, I think Ivory is the better bet to get any goal-line rushing attempts. But I agree letting Brees make a play is possibly a more preferable option with Thomas and Bush out.

If that is the case it would mean that Betts would probably be in since he is better at pass protection. I can't believe the initial diagnosis was 4-6 weeks and we never heard anything. That was the same time table given for bush.

Betts has been the better option the past two games and I would view him as the superior option again this week. If the Saints could ever play from the front late than I think Ivory would have a shot for those who need him in standard leagues. But their offense is scuffling and they haven't had that opportunity.

Thomas' ankle worse than we thought: The Saints officially ruled out RB Pierre Thomas (ankle) for Week 6 on Friday. Thomas told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that the original prognosis on his injury was an absence of 4-6 weeks. "I'm a little frustrated, but hey, it's coming along," said Thomas.

So was this a high ankle sprain injury? Time frame seems right.

who cares what its called. ya kno regular ankle sprains can take that long to heal too.anyway, 6 weeks from his injury would put him back for week 9 vs carolina. week 10 is their bye.

The one thing I am taking away from all this.....the Saints will address the RB position in the offseason. Dynasty owners get what you can for Pierre this year while he still has value. He will either be marginalized by a RB addition by the Saints or he will go to another team in no better than a timeshare situation. Remember the Saints tried to trade back into the first round to take Beanie Wells two years ago. Ivory is an interesting guy to watch here. He could play himself into a full-on timeshare with Pierre(when he comes back) and will be auditioning for a piece of the pie next year. His pass protection development will be key.

The Saints also have Lynell Hamilton who would have been the backup to PT if not for his own season ending injury. Still you may be right, I can see the Saints going RB in the draft next season.

i would imagine the saints will analyze and rank all of their potential draftees and if a rb that they have rated highest on their board is available they will select him.

With a Week 10 bye and Thomas maybe not coming back until Week 9 I wonder if they hold him out until Week 11 and hope he's healthy for the stretch run.

I could see this happening, especially if Bush is really ready to get back in the fold next week. A combination of Ivory, Bush & Betts could get them by.

For those who saw the injury, this should come as no surprise. He definitely has a high ankle sprain.

sometimes dont you have that feeling that they arent telling us the whole story? smells of high ankle sprain or worse, no evidence just a feeling...so 2 weeks no practice. 3rd week still no practice. julius jones signing. something just doesnt feel good about the whole situation. hopefully i am completely wrong and he is healthy enough to play sunday. :nerd:
goes to show sometimes you gotta just trust your gut. coulda dealt this guy a week ago when i got offered something of value...im REALLY GLAD they didnt say it was a 4-6 week injury right off the bat... :confused:edit: i hate sean paytons games...

WTF?!?!?! Pierre Thomas is dead and Sean Payton wouldn't even admit a HAS.

BOLD statement: Reggie Bush will be a fantasy RB1 when he comes back.

with no RB's worth a crap there might not be a stretch run .... .... when he's healthy he'll play IMO
Tough to argue that given their offensive issues at the moment. However, here's a look at their games before the bye:Week 6: at Tampa BayWeek 7: vs. ClevelandWeek 8: vs. PittsburghWeek 9: at CarolinaFor the sake of discussion let's assume the Saints win this week and next and lose to the Steelers (a tough game even if Thomas and Bush were both healthy). The Saints have already beaten the Panthers without Thomas and Bush (although it was close) so while the game is on the road you have to think they'll be the favorite unless Brees is out that week. If they get Bush back by then they could opt to rest Thomas that week and use the bye to ensure he's healthy for the final seven games and playoff run.Again, I realize the Saints don't look like world beaters right now and if they lose this week and against the Steelers they could be staring at 4-4 going into the Panther game. But if Thomas hasn't returned by Week 9 and they're sitting with a 5-3 record and Bush is back I could see them giving Thomas another week to rehab.

I view the fact that we're just learning this today to be an abysmal failure of the fantasy football intel machine. That info is pretty significant from an FF perspective. This situation never felt right, but he did go back into the game the day he got injured which was the glimmer of hope that perhaps kept people from probing more deeply into this situation.

I agree, they knew what he had, that's crap. Guy might be out all year the way this is going and they'll still say the ankle is progressing. W/e, I hope the Saints keep losing until he comes back.

I think with this news you have to start looking at which Saint's Backup will be the long term replacement for PT. I think once Reggie Bush comes back that the back to own will be Ivory due to his physical running style. Bush will be the pass catching RB and Ivory will get the hard yards. I see Betts becoming more of a supporting role in that scenario and Jones will be waived when Bush comes back.

This is my just my conjecture based on reading between the lines for last couple of years. Trying to trade for Beanie, Mike Bell, not giving Pierre a contract extension, the chatter about Hamilton in the preseason. I've always had rose colored glasses when it comes to PT and when he plays he's a borderline #1 back....he's just always nicked up. I really think they had a lot of faith in Lynell Hamilton this offseason and he was going to have a significant piece of the running game..a la Mike Bell. Next year someone else will be heavily involved...Hamilton, Ivory, new addition. If he goes to another team as a free agent it will be part of a timeshare. Based on his history, no one will give him the keys to the franchise RB spot. There aren't that many jobs available out there anyway. If you have him in a dynasty league and want to roll with him next year..be my guest. I am offering a realistic view of the situation.

Not sure it matters who the technical "starter" is since Betts and Ivory should split carries again but Betts is being listed as the starter today for those interested.

What is the prognosis this week?? Ivory may help the frenchman heal a little faster.

If you look on rotoworld under reggie bush news, Jay Glazer hints that PT could possibly be back this week. What he is basing this on I do not know. Watch the injury and practice reports this week.
Yesterday Jeff Duncan Tweeted that Thomas "maybe" could return this week. In his opinion Thomas was a better bet to return first than Bush. We'll see what today tells us.

'This Thomas guy needs to really sit out until he is fully ready to go. Sometime around week 17', said Chris Ivory.
