Pierre Thomas (2 Viewers)

Sproles is the obvious start in PPR leagues. But Ingram is not so much of a threat to Thomas anymore. Thomas is criminally undervalued right now. With Lance Moore out, I expect Thomas to catch 4 or 5 balls and have a 40% shot at a TD at home against San Diego. Who's in?

I'm starting him because of bye week issues (Mcfadden and Murray are out), but I wouldn't say I'm tremendously confident in him. Obviously his stock does go up a bit with Moore out, but I think the most to hope for from him is about top 25 RB numbers for this week (unless he adds a couple touchdowns or something).

My other option is Jacquizz Rodgers and I went with Thomas in what I considered a relative coinflip.

Anytime somebody falls out of the mix on that team, it is good for all the others. You know there are going to be 400 plus yards plus three or four tds coming out of there every week, so I would be happy to start P.T if I had to.

Thomas is a good RB but the Saints D is so bad they end up passing from behind and going with Sproles most of the time. All you can ask for is 40-60 yards. Ingram is still likely to vulture a TD from inside the 5.

Historically, Moore got a boost when Bush went out. I can see the inverse working, although the majority of check downs should go to Sproles.

I was having difficulty figuring out who would be the beneficiary since I don't believe in any of the WR's...I think you're right.

I never thought of this angle, I'm just waiting until they figure out Ingram doesn't deserve carries. I'll just bench him so you guys can reap the benefits. :wall:

What would be other RB's options to compare him to this week for performance?

(who's around his starting position, above and below)

I just can't get a gauge of who he would/could start in place of for this week.

Well, according to fantasypros.com, the majority are ranking him around 28th so mid-range RB3 or flex territory.Others with similar rankings..Fjax, Spiller, D.Brown, JStew, Mendenhall, M.Bush, Dwills, QuizzTo be honest, I think it's a crap shoot and could explain why on each and every single on of these players. The one constant here is that all these players are guaranteed around the same amount of touches (10-12) aside from Brown. Damn, Brown must really suck.

Ingram was held out of 3 GL series last week and he doesn't seem like a big part of the game plan unless the Saints have a lead. But with the Saints defense, they will be matching scores all night long I think.

I don't know...we are four games in and it looks like he sucks just as bad as last year. P.T looks good both running and catching. I would not be surprised if this is the week Ingram gets totally phased out. P.T is on our waiver wire, I am pretty good at running back, but if I was hurting I would for sure pick him up, because at some point Ingram is going to be done, he just sucks. I guess there really was a reason he was a low end #1 instead of a high end #1...all hype. If they would have not traded, they could have gotten lots of good players at 56 and with their number 1 this year...Le Shure, Murray, Ridley, Martin, Wison, plus a slew of good defensive players. It was an all time fail, and my guess is that Ingram has reached the end of his rope here....start P.T.!!!

While this may be a decent start, I was able to acquire Battle off waivers. Pierre WOULD have been in for me otherwise.

Until PT shows something he will continue to ride my pine unless further injury combined with bye week issues arise. Of course that is subject to change should he start producing, I won't just toss him in on a trade nor drop him.

I don't follow the Saints closely or really at all, but wouldn't Moore being out boost the stock of Henderson moreso than Pierre?

Henderson produces when the Saints O is clicking and the opponent's D gameplans for everyone else and the Saints just happen to package DH in. He's not a plug and play WR

Thomas is clearly the more effective back, but they never leave him in long enough to put up great stats. Thankfully, they finally got him a little involved tonight to salvage SOME points.

He's one of those guys that I always put on my teams, because the investment is usually nothing more than a very late round draft pick, and he's usually good to get you solid points when you're desperate. I've seen people call these types of guys wasted picks because you are passing on high upside players, but I personally think there is room for 1-2 safe guys like Thomas, along with the upside picks (assuming you have large enough benches).

I was in bye week hell at running back this week, but it was nice to know that I had reliable Pierre Thomas to get me some solid points. It's sad that he's nothing more than that though, because I think if given a full opportunity, he's still a top 15-20 fantasy RB.

Top 15 RB for sure if he was given 15-20 carries per game.

So, after 5 weeks, Pierre Thomas is the #30 RB in non-PPR leagues. He's (barely) getting double digit touches, but he does seem to be more primary than Ingram now. He's running strong and hard.

Will we see more of the same after the bye? Or will the coaches start using Thomas more and keeping Ingram shelved? They seem to have backed away from Ingram the last couple of games.

Pierre Thomas has the highest average per carry of any RB in Saints history.

He saved the Saints from the fire vs the Chargers.

And Saints fans are hoping he gets the chance to really get some carries and receptions and do some damage.

Thanks for the response. What are the thoughts on Sproles? I haven't watched a ton of their games this year, but he doesn't seem to be nearly as explosive. Thomas has looked tougher to tackle. Do you think the staff might mix things up during the bye week to feature Thomas more?

About Sproles - both him and Graham actually, this year the defenses seem to be waiting for them, this is one place the loss of Payton shows up. The offense has not changed enough from last year. There are no new wrinkles. I would like to say that Sproles looks as explosive as ever but where you can maybe see he has perhaps lost a step is on kick returns. And the Saints are not giving him carries, which is crazy because the man can hit the lane and find open space.Thomas' value on screens is the Saints' ace in the hole; they may go back to that. The problem for Pierre and Sproles is Ingram, that is the gameplan and the coaches keep giving him the rock. On the one hand it's good because he can take the hits and it shows commitment to the run, on the negative he is crowding out Pierre and Sproles and maybe even Ivory. As to whether Pierre gets more, there is no telling what the coaches will do. What confuses things more is that Vitt is due back soon and he could bring a totally different approach to gameplanning.

Making the Leap, No. 14: Saints RB Pierre Thomas

By Gregg Rosenthal

Around The League will profile the top 40 players we see Making the Leap in 2013. No. 14 on the list: New Orleans Saints running back Pierre Thomas.

Why Thomas is on the list
I've been a Thomas believer for a while. (I made my first post at my former employer about Thomas in symbolic support.) He does so many things that don't get a lot of attention: slipping tackles, catching anything thrown his way and always finishing runs. Thomas' touchdown in the Saints' Super Bowl XLIV victory (above) is an example of why he is one of the best screen-pass catchers of his era.

More than anything, Thomas brings maximum effort every single play. He's the type of player who fans and coaches don't fully appreciate until he's gone. That's why I decided to choose most of Thomas' highlights for this post from only one game. This is the guy you get every week. The Pierre Thomas experience isn't always flashy, but it's effective:

Despite his size, Thomas is a great inside runner who isn't going to go down with an arm tackle. He gets a ton of yards after contact. ProFootballFocus.com has a measurement that determines a running back's elusiveness. Thomas ranked in the top 10 last season in elusiveness and yards after contact, and he didn't have a single drop in 45 targets.

I've never understood why Thomas doesn't get the ball more. He has averaged 108 carries and 45 catches over the last two seasons, despite the fact that just three active NFL running backs -- Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson and DeAngelo Williams -- have a higher career rushing average than Thomas' 4.8.

That usage potentially could change this year.

Obstacles
Thomas never will be a workhorse back in New Orleans, especially after the Saints selected Mark Ingram in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Darren Sproles will receive his touches, and there are only so many carries to go around. Still, it wouldn't be a surprise if Thomas saw a jump in production this season.

The first thing coach Sean Payton told his team behind closed doors this offseason: They are going to run the football more this season. Thomas, not Ingram, lined up as the Saints' starter throughout OTAs. This is a change from the recent past when Ingram had been the starter.

The Saints never will give Thomas the ball 300 times, but his usage still could rise significantly. Perhaps Thomas isn't the best "big play" back in the league because of his long speed -- the play to the right is more the exception than the rule -- but he should get more chances.

2013 expectationsThomas made the Saints' roster as undrafted player in 2007. He has more experience than anyone on our "Making the Leap" list and admittedly is an odd choice as a breakout-type player. After all, he's already a certified Super Bowl hero who won't ever have to buy a drink in New Orleans again. He has topped 800 yards from scrimmage four times but has only risen above 1,000 once. He'd make the Role Player Pro Bowl every year for plays like the one to the right, but he's always battling just to get on the field.

Thomas is a supporting actor who has always had the chops to play a leading role if asked, and this is setting up as a season when Payton could give him more screen time.

Thomas is a nice value, you don't want him as anything more than a flex or RB3, but he is a much safer bet than most RBs going where he is.

Rotoworld:

The Times-Picayune expects Mark Ingram and Pierre Thomas to split the workload evenly in base packages.
In theory, it's a chance for Ingram to shed bust whispers. He's finally sustained health for an entire offseason, Chris Ivory isn't lurking and he's comfortable as a three-year veteran. However, the Saints don't execute too many base runs, instead using Thomas and Darren Sproles as satellite backs. Last year, the three-headed monster of Ingram, Thomas and Ivory combined for just 301 carries. Expecting the Saints to suddenly use Ingram in his natural pounding role requires a leap of faith. Anything more than 160 carries for either Thomas or Ingram would be a surprise.
