Player Bashing (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, just wanted to get your thoughts on this article I just read on ESPN.

Jerome Bettis

First Tiki and Eli and now this. Why have some of the former players started taking pot shots at players they used to play with? Is this a trend we think is going to continue?

It sells books, it gets attention.I think former athletes and coaches have a hard time not being the story, etc.

Who did he take a pop shot at? If you are referring to the Tommy Mattox statement that Kordell wasn't given a fair shake by Cowher, that is a very mild statement. The article was 99% about Bettis' faking the injury on the short yardage play, saying he was already injured. Did I miss something?

Yes, most of the article was about his faked injury but inside the lines was remarks about Cowher wanting to cut him and not wanting to give him the chance to do that. He called the remarks by Cowher and Richard Huntley "funny business" suggesting that they were deliberatly trying to sabotage his spot on the team.He didn't say that Maddox talked about Stewart rather that Stewart was not liked by Cowher and that he didn't think that Maddox won the job fairly. Whether or not that's true what happened to the football fraternity where nothing escaped the locker room? These guys are always so tight lipped about everything that it's just shocking to hear them releasing all this inside information about their personnal feelings towards everyone.

Maybe Cowher and the Steelers had no intentions of cutting Bettis and that was all in his head. Bettis said Huntley told his agent (something to that affect) that he was going be cut, but that could have been false information. The fact that Bettis thought it and expressed it publicly reinforces your point a little bit, but I wouldn't call saying that "Cowher wanted to cut me", exactly bashing.

Bettis and Barber are just trying to make headlines($$$) with books and/or broadcasting careers. We'll see if either of them can really cut it as a broadcaster once they don't have any "glory days" gossip left. At this point, I'd say neither will last more than 3 years once they can't bash former teammates and coaches.

Actually, Barber will make a very good living as an announcer. He's an extremely intelligent person who is very likeable in front of the TV with a millon dollar smile.

Is he a pretty boy? Yes. Do I think he's added any relevant commentary? No. But you're right, for the general public, it doesn't matter what a talking head says.

To answer the initial question, relevance.

Former players who are trying to have a career in the media after football, or who have just published books, only are interesting to the general public for the most part if they have some inside knowledge into the game. People love controversy (and buy books to read about it), so you do the math.
