Player Spotlight: Andre Johnson (1 Viewer)

I was one of those that thought AJ was way overrated heading into last year. Now, I've completely changed my tune. I think people are VASTLY underrated the David Carr effect.

We've now seen two very talented WRs play with David Carr as their QB. Here's what we've got:

With David Carr as his QB, Steve Smith was horrible

With every other QB he's ever played with, Steve Smith was a monster

With David Carr as his QB, Andre Johnson was below average

With every other QB he's ever played with, Andre Johnson was a monster

Now I know that association is not necessarily causation, but c'mon folks, let's call this what it is. With Matt Schaub, Sage Rosenfels, Jake Delhomme, Matt Moore, and Vinny Testeverde these guys were great. With David Carr and David Carr alone, they sucked. Very odd coincidence, no?

If you take Johnson's numbers over 9 games and extrapolate to 16 games:

107 Receptions

1514 Yards

14 Tds

If you take games which he and Schaub played together and extrapolated:

102 Receptions

1712 Yards

16 Tds

If you take the 2 games before he got Injured and extrapolated:

112 Receptions

2096 Yards

24 Receiving Tds

The moral of this story is that once upon a time, he was on pace to outdo Randy Moss last year...just sayin'

He's obviously better off with Schaub as his QB, but still excelled with the others. Houston doesn't have a running game to keep defenses honest, but they didn't have one last year either. The defense in Houston still isn't "good" so they'll pass plenty. He's the best player on the offense, they pretty much have to get him the ball.

102 Receptions

1408 Yards

14 Tds

AJ could be a top 3 WR if no injuries. the guy is a top notch weapon.

i think he's set for a big yr with Schauby.

105 1400 15

The offense runs through Johnson. When Kubiak was hired, he told Johnson he'd get a 100 receptions, and with David Carr throwing him the football in 2006, Johnson had 103.

Last year, with average quarterbacking from Schaub and Rosenfels, Johnson was a PPG monster. In 9 games last season, he had just one clunker (on the road in Cleveland 3-37-0). He scored in 7 of the 9 games he played, the sort of weekly consistency you'd normally expect from a RB.

The injury is obviously a concern, but I like him this year regardless.

108-1550-12

Let me say that THIS thread is evidence of why the Spotlights are so valuable to not only the forum members, but to staff as well. This conversation (and the back and forth) had made me re-think some of my assumptions about AJ and, as many of you probably noticed, I've tweaked his numbers (and ranking) upward as a result. I'm still worried about his performance this year (and won't draft him unless I'm convinced he's healthy) BUT for now, looking over the injury handicaps I gave other players, I've moved AJ back up to 13 games played.

Thanks for pushing back when you don't agree with something I say or project. That's what this is all about.

Anything new on AJ and his injury status?
Per Rotoworld:Texans coach Gary Kubiak indicated that Andre Johnson (groin) is unlikely to play Saturday.Kubiak said that Johnson could go if they wanted to push the issue, but it wouldn't be prudent to do so in a preseason game. The Texans will continue to be cautious with Johnson, but there is little reason to be concerned about the injury affecting him into the season.

hopefully the groin tweak will keep his value down a bit in the drafts so I can save a few dollars on him! Think he is in for a big year!

Exactly, what makes thi splace great is being able to present an idea, theory, startegy, and having instant feedback and know whether it is a good idea or not. Good stuff Wood.
